    This.  Most definitely this.

As far as a Red Dawn MMO, you'd have quite a fight over WOLVERINES!!! naming rights.

    Balderunner yes please.

But really the only one I would love to see (raises middle finger to CME) is Stargate so much potential such fantastic settings and lore.

How anybody could fudge that up or fail to get backing for one of the biggest IP's around at a time when MMO's where on the boom due to WOW is beyond me,  the execs at CME must have been absolute morons.

I doubt any of these would make a good mmo. Everything here is just a this vs that idea. Is that all an MMO is now? It seems like warcraft's boring formula has completely taken over our brains. All of these ideas would be much better for a FPS than for an mmo. An mmo needs a compelling world to happen in. You could have a two sided conflict or a 3 sided conflict or a guild/clan based conflict. or an every man for himself world. This vs that is a very narrow view of mmos.

What every mmo need however is a good world to happen in. Some place you can connect to and that you would like to explore. An mmo is ultimately the story of the conflict between you and a world. That world includes the conflicts with other players and with the world itself. Conquering it though achievement or wealth or combat or knowledge or whatever else.

Of these I really only see some potential in Blade Runner though it would take a lot of fleshing out.

As mentioned, Firefly would be an excellent choice. Just watched Serenity again the other day. Such a good movie.

    All die, so die well.

Problems I see here, apart from all of those suggestions being MMOFPS rather than RPG, is 2 factions. It's boring and been done to death. I'm not a huge fan of PvP in MMO's in general due to the problems of class balance. It's much easier with MMOFPS, you just pick up a gun, stick it in someones face and squeeze. Not much to balance there.

We need 3 or more factions for it to be really fun. DAoC had that part right. In 2 faction systems you end up with either an unbalanced population or having to make matches based on map size and numbers per team. 2 factions doesn't suit massive scale pvp without imposing population limits to keep the sides even.

And Bladerunner has already been done as a single player game by Westwood studios if I recall. It was a great game. It's such a shame EA destroyed Westwood during the Earth and Beyond debacle. Hmm, nothing new there...

    Underworld!!

    Humans Vs Werewolves Vs Vampires

Terminator is the only one that seems to have much multiplayer potential. The rest seem better suited for single player or co-op.

    Something like

Aliens - Marines vs. Aliens (has the option of throwing predators in there as well)

Colony ship heading to a new planet to colonize hit by meteor on the way there and end up on a planet over run by aliens and other species all hell bent on devouring you. The colonists are trying to setup towns and survive.

Underworld - Vampires vs. Werewolves vs. Humans

Has potential but the upcomming CCP mmo may have this genre covered.

Battle for LA - Man vs. Aliens

Aliens invade, we try to drive them out and survive. Cities to be won and lost etc.

Priest - More vampires but I like the take on vamps in this one and the church acts as a seperate faction from man and vampire.

Dune - This was an epic with many factions and conflicts of interest. Lots of pve and pvp content could be found in this one.

Dune was another great world. Not sure how well it would work with spice only coming from one planet and that planet being controlled by one group or family at a time usually but otherwise a great and huge environment to go after.

    All die, so die well.

    What no.....

Starship Troopers - you know you want it!

Clash of the Titans - why not?!

Nightbreed - create your own nightmare!!

Fighting for control over the spice along would pretty much keep the pvp clans and guilds happy for a long time. Have the planet attackable on the weekends Sat. & Sun. The victors control it for 5 days then it goes free for all again. Have it so that the victor gets to choose to claim if for their family (Clan/Guild) or for their faction. This would create many possibilities for politics and etc.

All I've seen here are 2 faction pvp which can easily be made as CounterStrike or Mount&Blade mods...

Better to be crazy, provided you know what sane is...

How about a dawn of the living dead or walking dead? I think that would be cool. Got the survivors as a playable faction, looters as another and maybe even the zombies? In a sandbox world would be killer.
  • oubersoubers Member UncommonPosts: 855

i think the following could be good mmo's:

    - the matrix....oh wait...they tryd.

    - Conan....hmmm also done.

    - lord of the rings.....DOH.

Guess it aint easy to make movies into an MMO...

My top 5 (that they can TRY) is:

    - Bladerunner

    - Planet of the apes

    - Conan.....i can hope for a conan sandbox right? :p hehe

    - Shogun mmo (ninja vs samurai vs english or something like that)

    - dunno about last one.

Another to add to the list, would be Marcroft I and II movies plus all the Robotech TV series.  You could end up fighting three or four factions if it was worked right.

    one word to the 5 movies/mmos listed....NO!

This isn't a movie, but I think Game of Thrones would make a good MMO.  There could be 7 different kingdoms for players to choose from and they are all at war with each other.  The ultimate goal would be to take the iron throne in King's Landing  and rule all 7 kingdoms.  It could work similar to the way TERA's politcal system will work, however with some differences.  In the GoT MMO, the iron throne could only be won by PVP.   The winner (however that would be determined) would rule the iron throne for 2 weeks and then the throne would be up for grabs again (or something like that).  Only max level players could take the iron throne.  I don't have everything thought out, but I'm sure something could be developed to make it fun.

As far as races, most are human in the series, but other races could be conceived for variety as well as the different classes.

have to say that this is a fabulous idea. spice could be the currency regardless of who controls Arrakis (or parts of it) at any given time. although there are, i believe, over a dozen "houses" and the spacing guild etc, certainly that could be reduced to a manageable number for faction control purposes. of course, older gamers might remember Dune II, which really initiated the whole RTS genre we still see today. i can only imagine this license is caught in some kind of legal hell right now, and it won't ever see the light of day as an MMO.

I cant help myself, but reducing Blade runner into action no-brainer conflict of two sides is just sick.

  • GravargGravarg Member UncommonPosts: 3,424

Aliens vs predator would make a great MMO!  You could have 3 sides, which for me is a must in any pvp...2 sides just stinks (LEARN IT ALREADY DEVS!)

Aliens, the original scariest of any of the monsters in any film.  I can remember watching that, then not sleeping for 2 days.

Predators, the Hunters of the universe.  Who doesn't want a shoulder mounted pulsar launcher?

Humans, thought of the weakest of the 3, however when pushed nothing beats the will of humans.  Plus we get gunships, arnold swartzengerman, Bill Dukes, apollo creed (carl weathers), Elpidia Carrillo (BOIOIOIOING), and Jesse Ventura.

  • TardcoreTardcore Member Posts: 2,325

Might as well add The Outsiders to that list.

    Greasers VS Soc

Personally I say no, no ,no, no , and HELL no!

Now thematically I feel any of these ideas could make an excellent MMO, just not with an actual name brand IP attached that the game company will have to try to live up to. The reason being is when a company takes on trying to bring an IP to an MMO, or even from book to big screen, a large percentage of the fan base is usually disapointed. There will always be the pall of fan disapproval hanging over the endeaver.

If however a company just makes an MMO based on say, their own brand of giant fighting robots, or killer genetic hybrids vs normal joe humans, people can't justify complaining about it just by saying it didn't live up to their own jaded fanboi expectations.

Dune was the first thing I thought of too, but I think the biggest problem with it is that the planet (Arrakis) was one big desert, and there's only so much you can do with that from a visual standpoint. Yes, you can have rock formations here, rolling dunes there, mountains here, salt flats there, but you're working with a very limited color palette in an environment whose primary descriptor is "featurelessness."

That would be difficult to pull off in anything other than a Farmville or text-based format, where expectations are much lower with the former, and entirely different with the latter. Subscription graphical MMO players, most of whom are already used to traversing ten vastly different environments in twenty minutes, would get sick of the brown and beige pretty quickly. Dune definitely has all the politics and conflict for a great MMO, but the stage it's set on would be a very, very tough sell.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

Seriously, it doesn't get any better than that. Of course, the movie only scratched the surface of the Manga. Besides, who wouldn't want to be immersed in a game whose soundtrack is written by Joe Hisaishi, or play in a world created by Hayao Miyazaki? Nevermind that the art style used by Miyazaki never gets old.
