"This is a big day for us; we are launching Star Wars™: The Old Republic™, BioWare’s largest and most ambitious project to date, and we’re very proud that you’ve been able to join us. It’s an honor to be able to share this game with you.

We want to thank every single one of them for being part of the team that developed this game; it’s a monumental accomplishment.

Another group of people that we depended upon was you, the players. We had hundreds of thousands of players spend millions upon millions of hours beta testing this game. Imagine if any other game launched but didn't allow everyone who purchased the game to log in on day one.  People would be raging and gaming media would be all over it.  That's exactly what is happening here, except many gamers and media outlets are buying it hook, line, and sinker because they've used marketing lingo to cover up what they're really doing.

    Think critically.  We're being played.

So it would have been better to allow everyone in on the same day and have the servers crashed , filled up to max, peep can't get in with thier freinds, guilds are screwed, que times etc etc ad naseum opposed to a wave phased launch ?

I am willing to go out on a limb here and say that you are the type of person that could make a million dollars a day and still find something to complain about.

Yes it would be better to have everyone access on the same day. Why do you give EA so much slack. This games estimated cost was 80 million dollars 5 years of development and they can not make a sameday launch work?  This is not some little company building an mmo in their basement. This is prehaps the most expensive mmo develpoped and you do not think they could have a smooth launch with everyone who wants entering on the same day? The OP is correct.

First and Foremost, This is Bioware's Game, they created, they set the Release date, if they say its released A month from now, even if its playable, its Release date is 1 month from now. Regardless of whether or not everything is already in working order.

Secondly, This is the best launch setup possible, Staggering the invites so they can assess the Stability of the Server on their terms.

Third. This way they can avoid any possible Long que times, getting the servers more balanced before the flood gate opens, letting everyone who comes in on the 20th know which servers are full which is medium, and if you want to wait in Que then do so on your own choice. If you don't want que, you already knows where you can go.

Fouth.  Guild pre launch allows many positive outcomes, one includes having the public know which guild is in which, so if you are familiar with the Guild in other MMO's you can either avoid them or join them in the same servers. And also avoid having unbalanced Republic and Empire numbers.  ( its not totally balanced right now, because its not the 20th yet )

Fifth. They increased the Early Access Dates by 2 to allow everyone the chance to try it before the actual release date of the 20th, so that they provide what they promised. An Early access to all who pre-ordered, regardless if its 1 day, 1 hour, 1 minute, its early access to what everyone else who didn't pre-order.

Its a shame that you didn't pre-order and input your code, its not their fault, because there is hundred of thousands of players that did. It was your choice to not do it with us, they didn't put a gun to your head and told you to not preorder.

Life is a Maze, so make sure you bring your GPS incase you get lost in it.

If this was launch day I could see people being miffed.

This has been one of the best ideas for a games launch.  The typical MMO launch mess is getting old. Bioware stagering the start is working out really well. No massive que or server crashes. Poeple that started a few days early won't fill up the starting zones.  More MMO's should launch like this.

I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.

People complain that Bioware doesn't know how to innovate and that this game is the same as every other mmo.

Then when they do something different to improve the gameplay experience at launch, which is usually atrocious in other mmos, they complain that they should do the exact same thing as everyone else.

I wish I could play today, but I can't. Others can. Big deal.  I'm willing to wait a bit to keep the queues down and keep the servers up.

    Smooth launch accomplished.

Was there some other point to your response?

Beyond that, there is more to a smooth launch than money. Sure they could open up 3,000 servers, but if the population dips in a few months and servers have to be merged you'll all be back here bashing them for that.  They have to limit the number of servers, even though there are going to be too many people for each server.

Even if the population never dips and continues to grow, the servers will never see a beating like launch day again. Peoples play times will be more spread out and not all logging in at the same time.

It's always better to have to open up new servers down the road then it would be to have to merge them later. People start saying a game has completely failed when server mergers happen, plus it destroys communities.

Game launched - 131231231231414141231 Players trying to log in - Queue - You cry on the forums.

Game launch split up into Early Access and Full launch - Servers run stable, No Queue - You cry on the forums.

And saying "blergh blergh blergh , they could avoid queues so easily if they only ...."

Ye, why dont you sign up for a job there and bring the solution ? Or do it yourself and patent the solution. Get sh#tloads of money.

As another person indicated, restaurants do it all the time. I've gone to two such "openings" in this past year. We also had to put our name in and there was a "chance" that we would get to attend.

Plays/musicals do this all the time where they have small performances for revisions. The show you are seeing might not be the show that is the final product.

This poor sap actually believes that they decided to out of the goodness of their hearts to give us two "extra" days. Do you? If you're that gullible then I have beach-front property to sell you in Arizona.

This was all planned from the get-go.  Under-promise and over-deliver.  All (good) design firms (architectural, engineering, graphics, games, etc.) operate under this model.

Make no mistake, folks.  This is launch day disguised under the marketing ploy of being "early access."  That's the only way they could get around the inevitable backlash that would result from them doing this without the marketing speak cover.

"This is a big day for us; we are launching Star Wars™: The Old Republic™, BioWare’s largest and most ambitious project to date, and we’re very proud that you’ve been able to join us. It’s an honor to be able to share this game with you.

A huge team of talented, passionate people at BioWare, Electronic Arts, Lucas Arts as well as many other partners all over the world poured their hearts and souls into this game. We want to thank every single one of them for being part of the team that developed this game; it’s a monumental accomplishment.

Another group of people that we depended upon was you, the players. We had hundreds of thousands of players spend millions upon millions of hours beta testing this game. Without you we never would have been able to build it; thank you for your contribution. This game is yours just as much as it is ours.

And finally we want to emphasize that this is just the beginning of a very long journey together. The game is launched, but it’s not done; it will probably never be done as we’re committed to working on Star Wars: The Old Republic in order to keep improving it and delivering exemplary service to you, the customer. It’s going to be a great ride.

Finally, we can only think of one appropriate way to sign off on this auspicious occasion:

May the Force be With You!

So, er, why are they doing it this way?

To get those preorder bucks and to avoid bad press which effects sales. This is not some generous offering to you as a player. Remember you are the customer. This is not charity.

Yet you say they actually COULD have a smooth launch with everyone entering on the same day. If they could why are they doing it this way? Not quite following the logic here.

Quote: Are you so niave to think EA and BW after spending 80 million dollars could not have a smooth launch horse crap. We are not talking about some small company. This is EA why not expect them to let everyone who buys the game enter on the same day. They can do it. Remember EA 80 million dollars no need to cut them slack.

Answer: Probably not. Money isn't the key factor in this particular case. Take for instance Rift, which released in really good form or Lotro which did as well. Both games had far less invested into them yet released well. Why? In the case of Rift.. damned good team. Really surprising to be honest. Lotro had a established team so thats skill.

Now you have EA .. how many of there Mmorpgs released well? Umm... Ultima? NO WAY! Earth and Beyond? Bad memories. That unfortunately points to perhaps a inherent issue with releases. Now compare it to Swtor.

Id say this release is relatively flawless compared to the others and points to a improvement :)
