So they posted about CB at this open chat. Why no official announcement on the official site? Why no FAQ update? Hmmm? I have a feeling there's no CB and they lied because they don't wanna disappoint the fans. Arenanet is being too secretive...
Note: I'm not a troll. At worst case, I'm just paranoid.....
Edit:
Sorry bout the stupid title.
And thanks for not biting my head off lol
Peace!

There's no reason to announce it in any big way. It's invite-only and people in it will not be able to talk about it. You can't apply for it and they won't announce their invitation criteria.
they almost never post new info on the website, alot of it gets tossed around on twitter and guildwars2guru
Wow, quick replies. I guess I feel better.... I want this game so bad I'm turning into an insane paranoid, lol. But why no CB for everyone? That's really weird...
Edit: I meant everyone like, invites for old GW players, obviously
BOOYAKA!
Because closed beta should be about testing the game instead of demoing it.
Yeah, um, I guess I'm just missing the official announcement from the website. I mean, they posted about the Mesmer. They should have announced CB as well..... That would I do if it was my game
I don't think you usually make any big announcement for something that is supposed to be private and closed. They usually make a big announcement and plenty of advertising in mmo industry to the OPEN beta though; maybe you are mixing those? Closed beta and open beta are totally different. And anyway i think Anet said they will make a short beta, and i'm not even sure they will make an open beta, but maybe someone that know better can confirm this. Don't forget that this game is buy the box to play, so its a totally different model than sub mmo where you want as much people try the game to have them pay sub where they make money. In usual pay for the box game you don't have such a big deal about open beta, that's a sub mmo stuff.
No. Anet said that because most people see open beta as a demo, open beta will come late in developement when most bugs etc are ironed out so open beta will be short. Anet said nothing about the length of closed beta.
Who knows if the closed beta started, or is it closed beta at all. And what does that mean at all.
Why?
They started beta long time ago. And there is no way to register for beta. Its clearly ony professionals + family and friends.
And nothing changed.
So if anything they just announced name change of beta
Those that are in beta are technically not allowed to say that they're in beta, GW2's NDA for their beta is rather ruthless. If you really want into beta you'll have to be preposterously creative. No amount of time spent in the original guildwars will yield access to the Guild Wars 2 beta.
Then again, I might be madder than the mad king.
Remember one rule though, closed beta doesn't exist. *HUSH*
The Closed Beta announcement has been on the webpage all year and with all major game conventions they have said the same. Also if you look at the demos people play at these conventions the game has been in Alpha and the amount of polish in the game makes me wonder why they have a closed beta at all except for the material that wasn't showned at these events.
I firmly believe CB is ongoing now, but I don't think it's much difference from alpha since what they do seems pretty damn solid the first time they show it
No no they always said to be in alpha, the beta is new.

I think it's a little fishy too, and may have just been "announced" so that ANet could technically meet its promise to start CB by the end of the year.
I think the situation is basically that ANet said the would be in beta by the end of the year. We (the fans) assume that means there will be applications for us to fill out, invites sent, etc. etc. But really, all beta means is that the game is "feature complete" to most developers.
So they could just mean that the game is "feature complete" when they say they are going into beta. But honestly, they have to realize what the fans think beta will mean (invites, applications, announcements). So I think they may have just not been ready for that by the end of the year, but just announced they were going into beta (technically correct since the game is probably feature complete), to meet their promise.
Not a big deal either way. I would rather them take their time to get this right.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Except that they literally announced MONTHS ago (Seriously, way back during Gamescon, maybe earlier) that the beta they were going into was closed beta, and wouldn't be open to the public, or even have a system for people to apply for it.
... that the only open beta they had, if they had it, would be very brief, more of a 'oh, hey, free trial of the game so you can see how awesome it is' thing than people actually testing it.
I've been paying pretty close attention to beta announcements, so this whole closed beta announcement doesn't surprise me at all.
... if they were going to lie about being in closed beta, they could have done that last year, or whenever they wanted, since it's closed so nobody can argue otherwise.
So when they said 'closed beta by end of the year', I automatically assumed December, because that's the way such things work. (Just like if a fighting game advertises 'over 36 characters!' they mean 37. Or maybe 38.
Ah I see, so it was announced there would be no application before, that makes more sense.
Still, I think it may have been better for them to call it closed internal testing or something just to avoid confusion. I know the technically correct industry term is beta, but beta means something different to gamers just because of its past use as a marketing tool.
And there's bound to be a lot of fans who haven't been following the news as closely and are confused as to why there's not more of a commotion over beta beginning.

It's definitely not friends and family only, but it does include friends and family. Last Friday GW2 went into closed beta, and when I say closed beta, I actually mean "Nun Beta".
I acctually agree this "closed beta" resembles more of an alpha or F&F beta than closed. (0 sign up options = not really pulling a select few more like F&F)

I would wait for beta next month. If nothing happens in january then I would start feeling paranoid. This is coming from long time fan.

There's really no reason to post about closed beta, although they did make somewhat of an announcement on the GW2 Guru forums specifying that there was no way to get into the closed beta and it was invite only, as there were websites and people springing up all over the place offering to get people in, sell beta keys , etc.
The GW1 beta worked similarly. It was close to the release date that they did it, and it was largely friends and family. The rest of us didn't hear anything about the beta until they did the open beta, which was more like weekend 'tests' where the game was live for a weekend for large amounts of people to test before launch. I don't know if that's how they'll do it this time (they haven't specified), they just said they'd hold closed beta even closer to launch than GW1, it would be larger and - just recently - they stated it would decide the OB and release dates.
Also believe it or not, that it wasn't announced on the main page isn't strange at all. Except for class and game mechanics, they've never released info about anything on the site, it's mostly their Blog that people have been getting the real information from. That blog is what told us about the CB date. I'm pretty sure if it was wrong they'd have corrected people by now, since that information was splashed all over various MMO sites.

I wonder if someone were in the current CB, hypothetically, if they would be getting some sort of idea how far off the open beta stuff would be starting.
