The only reason i can imagine XIV getting runner up for innovation is its graphics, it too has cutscenes, the fact you can change your class through your weapon and maybe the fact that Square Enix admitted their faults and made the game free to play until they ironed out the issues and have since been working around the clock to make the game a satisfactory product, not many companies will admit they were wrong and work in the best interests of the customer like Square Enix has this past year.
I will say this, anything LA is associated with turns to crap. I really have to wonder about George Lucas these days if he really supports these yahoos. Left alone, Bioware might have had a chance, the current rendition is majorly flawed, even KOTOR was much better.
Question now becomes how to keep a playerbase happy enough to stay subscribed.

Hmm, mass emails to try to get some of those snap-judgement customers to try it again?
No idea, really, marketing your way out of a hole is always tough to do.

Who knows. What I know is that my sub ran out this morning and I have no real desire to resub, having suffered through Rift's terrible PvP and grinded my way to RoS Raid content on 3 classes and HK on my main. I feel like I've done all that Rift has to offer and with my main's server going from High pop to Low pop in a matter of 2 months, means there's even less reason for me to return.
DCUO's combat is completly different than FFXXi, so fail on the copy comment there Gravarg. Plus the action combat hasn't been done on any other MMO prior or since. Imagine how cool SWTOR would be (or even FFXXI) if it had DCUO's combat mechanics? Future MMOs should have more action based combat, imo. Will be interesting to see if Terra really has action combat or if it's just faking it.
I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.
I've never played Rift, but in every demo I've seen it looks 95% identical to WoW.
Multi-class system that allows free respecs anytime out of combat.
Constant, highly rewarding public events that get people playing together outside of dungeons.
Those reasons alone make it different from WoW. Fundamentally, I think it's a better game, it's just that WoW's been out longer so it has more accumulated content.
no offense, but I personally think that if it wasn't for all of the star ways fan boys, Guild Wars 2 should have deff been most anticipated imo without any competition.

WoW has anytime out of combat free respecs too...Its probably where Rift got the idea from.
Its also not a true multi-class system, its somewhere inbetween.
I suppose Rift is the only MMO of 2011 really, if you don't count 11 days long enough to qualify for an award (I mean SWTOR).
I do think that giving the award for best MMO of 2011 to Rift is a bit like asking which is the best little green Jedi on Dagobah. There's only going to be one winner...but not a lot of choice.
Personally I'd have given the award for 2011 to SWTOR, even if it will only see 11 official days of 2011. The choice for 2012 will be a lot harder and a lot more meaningful.
Edited because I realise what a bad example the Yoda one was: It's like choosing the best amphibious humanoid character rescued in a swamp by Qui Gon Jin. Only one choice but...yeah you get it.

Rift is a solid winner. I think maybe, World of Tanks deserves to be a hybrid winner though, tons of people world wide playing this great game.

Way to avoid bullets
Giving SW:TOR and GW2 the same prize haha
well played
"It has potential"

"It sucks"

and SWTOR as most anticipated.. WOW-RIFT-SWTOR... all the EXACT same gameplay.... ok Rift tried to innovate a bit..
thank Cthulhu for GW2....
..Cake..
rift had no real competition so...
Guild Wars 2 Youtube Croatian Maniacs
My Guild Wars titles
Rift won it deservedly but due to lack of competition.
If SWTOR is an average game then RIFT is no different.
nice one rift..well deserved..despite all the moaners who said it was crap..at least you tried something different.

Rift is the obvious choice.
As for SWTOR, the Star Wars title is the MAIN reason for its beginning success. If you take away "Star Wars", the game would be just another flop.
You mean like Rift is a flop?
Would be quite strange to make it game of the year, when its launched 12.20.2011 ..
Yawn, go away troll.
Grats Trion.

League of Legends isn't an mmo.
Congrats Rift, you were the tallest midget
Great list, happy to see Rift win and so many people supporting the decision
*laughs* man I'd +rep you if I could.

I think that sums it up that EvE was their number 2 choice.
good list. agreed on all points.
