The reason people are hopping from Rift to TOR currently is the fact that they are MMO hoppers who will jump from the current themepark treadmill MMO to the next one when it launches, just like they did hop from WoW/WAR/Aion to Rift when it launched.

It's the circle of life for these people, and it will never change. Next big MMO title launches and the MMO hoppers will desert TOR faster than you can say "Where'd everyone go??"

Its people hoping for a game thats worthy of long term attention.  the people that didnt jump from WoW to LOTRO because WoW was worth long term attention.  For the vast majority of those who have played it, Rift isnt worth a long term investment.  Will SWTOR be worth it?  No one knows yet.

I think Rift is a fantastic game and Trion impressed the hell out of me with the rate that they are putting out content.  On the other hand, Rift just doesn't seem different enough to me.  When I jumped from WoW I was so burned out that, even though Rift seems way better to look at and has a fair number of improvements, I just couldn't get into it the way I wanted to.

SWToR, on the other hand, gives you that single player Bioware experience, while still having all of the standard MMO features that you have come to expect.  The voice acted dialogs really make it feel more immersive to me, particularly when you throw in light side and dark side conversation options.

I don't yet know if I will get burned out on SWToR, but for now it feels new and different, and is really holding my attention.  Bioware single player experience plus MMO features is a win, in my opinion.

    Currently playing:
    Rift
    Played:
SWToR, Aion,EQ, Dark Age of Camelot
    World of Warcraft, AoC

Day one of release, come back in 6 months and tell me who is scratching whos head. Don't try to claim any victories until you win a battle. TOR is new, its gonna have a lot of box sales because of IP recognition and EA games publicity. But AOC looked just like this when it came out, we will see is all you are right now with TOR that is it, its proven nothing to the industry so far.

apart from the size arguement on why ToR is doing so well in most peoples minds, i think it also has to do with every single encounter is voiced over.

if you strip away the voice overs what do you get? nothing. without that its a game with kill x collect y fedex quests from lvl 1 to 50 with no break inbetween with crafting that is subpar.

or maybe its because its star wars, strip away the ip and people would be burning this game at the stake

TOR sold the boxes mostly on the SW IP, not because it's a great game or anything. World size probably has little to do with it's success. While no variety in starting areas was certainly a problem for Rift, as replay value was next to nothing, TOR also has a problem with this. I don't see it as all that different. Some people like the voice overs, the first time anyway, but long term is not TOR's middle name either.

Unless I'm mistaken, this incident can be spun the opposite way too: every day games receive millions of suggestions from players, and this is one example of a company actually listening.  (That's what happened, wasn't it?)

That is fluff, not soul. Soul is if you get a lot of interesting stories and quests, have a good challenging and varied combat system, may interact with other players in many cooperative as well as competitive ways, and so on.

Or in short, Soul is if you have a reason to play. Not if the gameworld itself is a kind of movie.

P.s.: Okay, poor choice of words. If the gameworld would be a movie we could watch, it would probably add a huge factor of entertainment and thus reason to play and thus soul. As its just some moving around, though, doesnt really constitute something that will give longtime motivation to play a game.

Yeah, its a good idea to not play a MMO - any MMO - right at release, because you get all the bugs and server shortage etc. Just wait a bit until the initial hype stops.

Between the two it depends on what you want in a game, I enjoy Rift yes it is a knock off of wow now (i admit it humbly). There are many things in Rift i truly enjoy, however i can easily flip the coin for Star Wars but for completely different reasons. For me it is the story and the lore in Star Wars that makes it interesting the group well i have my wife and the companions so we can def. do our thing together, where in Rift we have to find others.

I and my wife will be subscribed to both games but i will be playing Rift more as it is more my style while she plays Star Wars more. so it just depends on your perspective.
