I just read an intersting column on the issue of roleplaying in the latest issue of Pc Gamer, (under the "Alternate Lives" section)

The author described that the reason that roleplaying was so rare in MMO's was because if he or she made the choices they feelt the cahracter would actually make, such as attack the higher leveled creature, they know they could die, and it would thus detriment the progress they'd made so far. Many players are not willing to take this risk, since most players aorudn them wont.

Don't buy that for a second, with death in-game being such a non-issue mostly.  You might risk pocket change and a restart in some other area.  If you're scared of that, you don't have any business being in the game in the first place, let alone roleplaying.  People don't role play because to them it's just a gigantic chat-room with pretty graphics.  And usually the devs don't even try to help.  Either that or they don't role play because they just don't know how.  I also fault the devs there too.  See the pattern?  We need a good game.
