Just cause Skyrim is an RPG doesn't mean it plays the same as other RPGs. Final Fantasy is an RPG but it doesn't play like Skyrim.
Out of all the RPG's out there IMO Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind are the closest single-player games you'll get to a themepark MMO experience. Sure they play differently in terms of combat, and options to the player ( stealing, killing, jail, etc). In a round about way though TES games are basically the shy mans MMO. All IMO of course...

Yeah...I agree here.
I would say that Borderlands is the closest single-player game to a themepark MMORPG. Of course, that's kind of cheating, because it was deliberately developed to emulate themepark MMO's .
The ES games differ from themepark MMO's in their "openness." You can explore pretty much the entire world at level 1, there are no classes you just get better at what you do, and quest lines can be done in any order or not at all.
EDIT: I suppose older BW games and JRPG games could be considered SP counterparts to themeparks as well.

Actually...no that is indicative if the game is half-way decent or not, if people are complaining about basic PvP issues and not necessarily balance issues, then the basic PvP needs work. Go read all the post over at the offical forums where people say the games PvP is clunky and unresponsive. What you are seeing is a vocal minority that is absolute in its intention to proclaim innovation as the industry's savior. This is unavoidable and occurs in literally every single genre. What these proclaimers fail to observe, however, is that the most enjoyed and successful games do not focus on being innovative, they focus on being fun. Just take a look at the industry's most renowned titles: Call of Duty, Halo, Starcraft, Diablo, World of Warcraft, etc. Change for the sake of change is unnecessary.

1. You can buy and furnish houses.
2. You can advance in standing in any guild you choose.
3. You can just explore the world and be rewarded for doing so by finding unique dungeons.
4. The system is skill-based and doesn't lock you into any specific playstyle.
...list could go on
But anyway, nothing on that list is as important as the fact that you can choose whatever you do. At no point in the game are you railroaded into doing one thing. You can literally ignore the main quest and have a great time playing.
You can also play and never even realize that several of the guilds even exist. The entire game is about choices and that's why it's a sandbox.

You obviously didnt read what I put then. "When they were first released" as for WoW, it pioneered the solo MMO gameplay which is now being imitated by every new MMO since. So yeah. Maybe instead of acting like 4chan reject, maybe you should actually learn what made these games stand out to begin with that allowed them to get mediocre sequals/ripoffs.

This is a site dedicated to mmorpg fans so i think it's fair to say most people who browse these forums have been around the block once or twice. Most people are desperate for innovation to save the genre because we aren't having fun... with any of them. I've been playing MMORPG's since UO Third Dawn and absolutely love them. It's not like mmo's aren't for me I know for a fact how much I enjoy the genre. The last 2-3 years have been focused on bringing in new people to the mmo experience instead of satisfying the guys who've been around for over a decade though which is really wearing on everyone's patience. Especially the people who frequent a site like this.
The long time MMORPG players are twiddling our thumbs waiting for the new players on the block to say "Ok, I'm ready give me something new." Until that happens we are in a sort of limbo waiting to be satisfied. SWTOR represents just one more AAA title that's extending the time period before we get something that's actually a "new" game.
Yep, seriously, that is my opinion. I'm not the first to say that not by a long shot, hell that description is what turned me on to Morrowind in the first place, it was dubbed the shy-mans MMO in a mag I read back then .

To me that's like calling GTA a sandbox game, which it is frequently. I prefer the term open-ended. As to me that descibes the design a little better. Sandbox implies soem form of world building in my mind, which TES games are devoid of, as well as games like GTA.
TES by design IMO resembles a themepark environemnt a lot more than it does games like SWG or UO.

Also...MW3 didn't really innovate, but MW1 sure did. It started the whole "gain exp, buy better stuff in multiplayer" that has taken over EVERY FPS game. MW3 is still just capitalizing on that innovation.
The difference between SP games and MMORPGs is that SP games have a much shorter lifespan (typically). So they can capitalize on a single innovation with several sequels if people really like it. MMORPGs on the other hand can go on and remain popular for several years. So when you release an MMORPG that isn't really innovative, you're directly competing against the game that you copied off of, and that can be bad for you.
Yep, seriously, that is my opinion. I'm not the first to say that not by a long shot, hell that description is what turned me on to Morrowind in the first place, it was dubbed the shy-mans MMO in a mag I read back then .

so basically games like minecraft is your only definition of a sandbox game?
Instead of just spamming game is great, can you list why you think it is great? It's just like the ones that come in and go, "game sucks!", it adds absolutely nothing to the conversation or discussion.
I love Skyrim but out of the box it isnt a sandbox in the slightest, It is a free roaming rpg and it's great. The only thing that gives it anything of a sandbox quality is for the Modder's.
So many people on this site are too jaded and close minded to get enjoyment out of just about any kind of game.

You don't get it, do you? I will say this again: The most successful and enjoyed games don't look to being innovative. They care about being fun because that is what matters most. Only a vocal minority is constantly searching for change which, to your misfortune, is not what sells.
Just cause Skyrim is an RPG doesn't mean it plays the same as other RPGs. Final Fantasy is an RPG but it doesn't play like Skyrim.

its a sandbox.
Sandbox = non-linear gameplay
its all what sandbox means.
Many "sandbox fans" would disagree due to the fact that all you're doing is questing, the same types of quests we have in MMO's, there are just more of them and you get to pick and choose a bit.
Yep, seriously, that is my opinion. I'm not the first to say that not by a long shot, hell that description is what turned me on to Morrowind in the first place, it was dubbed the shy-mans MMO in a mag I read back then .

You prefer open-ended, but the rest of the world prefers to call it a sandbox. By the worldbuilding definition, Civilization is a sandbox, as is SimCity.
Anyway, I think a problem with the MMORPG crowd is that so many of us think a game has to be either SWG or UO to be a sandbox. But really, I think that a lot of us just want something not as linear and directed as what we have now.
