No it makes it one of the ONLY predictor of trends we have:) Kind of the whole point i have been making in this whole topic.
Never said it was flawless, or the best, just that it happens to be one of the few things we can look at and see some actual numbers.
Because it is not the best is not a reason to completley ignore it. It is better than noithing. It really comes down to that. Something you can see, and so can use, is better than all the best things you would like to have or wish you had, but do not.
Yes you have to be careful with it, but again, yes it does show trends. And it is one of the few things we actually have to look at.
So i say use what you have available, no key? At least the crowbar got the door open. :P
Just because it's "the ONLY predictor of trends" (which isn't even close to being true), doesn't make it right.
Basing your guesses on invalid data doesn't make it anymore truthful. It just shows that you are willing to use invalid data as a method to try and support your claims. Which, in turn, doesn't make your claims anymore truthful than before you used invalid data.
And, to reiterate, it ONLY shows trends WITHIN the X-fire userbase. When you try to apply the data outside of X-fire, that is when the validity goes right out the door.
And leaving words out of others posts to try to make your point shows what about who?
I said and POSTED it is one of as in there are more than one. Leaving words out changes things quite a bit. Yup sure does.
And again with yes it shows trends in x-fire. But it stops there:) I do not think so.
I say we can argue how accurate it is using it for the rest of a games populaton, but saying a trend in a part of a games population can NOT be used for the rest? Umm do not think so. Really depends on how large and long the trend is is all. To gauge the accuracy.
As I said about 30 pages back, you can't really overcome Faith with just Math.
In the meantime, waiting for dinner to be done.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Really what is the point. If you don't think xfire stats mean anything what is your point? Ok you don't believe xfire stats mean anything. Got it so move on.
From my point of view I have validated xfire stats by taking actual counts of players and comparing them to what xfire shows and found that the numbers not only correlate for the trend in an existing game but even when compared between games. There is some error and it isn't perfect but it is good +/- 10%.
Those of us that see it as a valid indicator or where swtor is going enjoy watching xfire ticking up and believing that swtor is growing and love to watch for the peak.

As to your last part: Extraneous variables in the sample prevents any validity in the data. Since there are no sampling controls at all when trying to take X-fire data and apply them to the rest of the gaming population, the validity of the data goes out the door.
Swtor has a peak of 350k concurrent users. Given that wow has been in decline slightly anyone think that xfire showing swtor being about half as many users logged in in a day is not a good indicator of relative activity...
For the record yes I did log into all the servers on several games, eq2, and some other game that I'm not recalling, and I did count all the users that were logged in. Wow numbers are public record. And you used to be able to get peak users on some wow server for comparisons. I even posted the results on this forum but a long long time ago.

Like i said to others, you are free to name some other ways that we can see player numbers and hours played that we ,as gamers, can look at?
Have not heard back from them with some of these, apparently, abundant sites.

Unless you've got access to a developer's numbers, there's no possible way you've ever gotten anything close to an actual count of players. Sorry.
I still find peoples reliance on xFire to be entertaining. I personally am in a guild that spans 5 games, 200+ members, not one of us use xFire... surely we aren't the only ones.
made a growth by 17% of logged xfire user per day from last weeks wednesday.
reached a new record high of 11255 xfire user per day
reached a new record high against WoW with 57% of WoWs recorded xfireusernumbers
Which side was advocating the accuracy of xfire trends again?
I love how nobody wanted to comment after you posted this, as you basically put everyones foot in their mouths on both sides of the argument. :-) This thread should probably be closed too, there is some serious flaming going on, lol.
The funny thing is, I think most people here know that xfire does mean SOMETHING but it does not mean A LOT... They've just let themselves become polarized by their like or dislike of the games direction. I would argue that xfire players tend to move from game to game a lot. So we are going to see a larger spike in initial players and a larger decline as well. That doesn't really hurt SWTOR or help it; just something to keep in mind while interpreting xfire stats.

If a few days barely qualified as a trend, a random spike certainly doesn't. I thought maybe that was on a saturday, but on a teusday? Who knows. If it keeps going up, or even levels off at that higher point, that will be something to talk about - I"d have no explanation, but until we see if that even happens, there just isn't much to comment on.
We're not all just using statistics in an attempt to back up already made-up minds. Some of us really are curious about the truth, and how it will play out. IMHO, XFire helps with that, even if it doesn't "prove" anything.. I don't know why anyone's looking for scientific accuracy just to chat about gaming trends on a forum, but I'm not going to get into bickering about that.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
You should probably compare to the same weekday the week before and not the day before. I find these sort of figures very fun to speculate about, but it will take a month or two, or even more before they really tell us anything.
If the person playing is haveing fun with the game, then the person will play the game. Xfire numbers cant be counted on, because its 1 out 100000 that uses xfire!

That would mean there are more than 1.1 Billion ppl playing SWTOR.

Lol, it is still far to unsure to say anything one way or another. We wont have any true clue one way or another until we see how large percantage of the players that start paying the monthly fees once the free month is up.
The only time X-fire stats are useful is when you have months of ratings, and only if it goes up or down a lot. Comparing to other game it gets really pointless.

By that reasoning if the person playign is having fun then he would be playing the game rather being on the forums and we can close down this forum. Flawless logic there!

He was correct in representing that these are trends WITHIN X-fire.
If he tried to apply this outside of X-fire, then he'd be using completely invalid data.

This.
Again-- anything before the end of the first month is pointless. The game just launched. It's new and shiny. We need to wait until people actually start paying sub fees before we can really start to predict the state of the game or where it will go in the long term. And I say this as a fan of the game.
I suppose this is just because of the maintenances?
The key statistic isn't how many hours played but rather how many unique players. They are upto 11052 vs 19933 for wow.
Just last week they were only around 40% and now they have climbed to well over 50%...
Unlike most games swtor is still gradually climbing after the initial burp. This kinda implies that viral forces of friends talking to friends is bringing in more people.
Considering how many people are playing swtor (1.5-2m) and the very small amount of people who actually use xfire...I doubt that this proves anything or has any relevance to anything population wise whatsoever.

Let's avoid baiting other users into personal attacks guys. Thanks.
just saw some interesting numbers.
Wow top concurrent user count was 800k in 2007 after the launch of burning crusade in china.
And I just saw this http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/01/03/research-firm-swtor-has-350-000-peak-concurrent-users/

Yes i think the last big maintenance day was the 27 with the lowest 53.400, so probably it's the maintenance.
An honest review of SW:TOR 6/10 (Danny Wojcicki)
who cares about xfire numbers?
If the person playing is haveing fun with the game, then the person will play the game. Xfire numbers cant be counted on, because its 1 out 100000 that uses xfire!
Active guild member numbers at prime for me:
week 1: 80%
Week 2: 50%
Week 3: 10%
This is verified by the fact that their levels haven't budged, stopped at 15-25...all of them.
So i take that as a little snapshot.
That would mean there are more than 1.1 Billion ppl playing SWTOR.
