If xFire is the final word on if a game is succeeding or not, Rift and all the FTP MMOs on the market are getting their ass handed to them. SWTOR-- 30,496 hours played Rift--1,822 hours played That's what, over a 15 to 1 ratio? If Rift is a successful MMO then Bioware/EA must be taking out a vault in Fort Knox to store all their money.
Rift is almost a year old.. come back in a year and we can compare numbers ill bet swtor is sitting right around where rift is now.. first couple months for ANY new MMO has a ton of hours played..
That's weak. LOTR and STO are way older than Rift and they're getting more hours on xFire than Rift.
I know the first thing that'll cross your mind is to say they have stronger IPs than Rift...well yeah they do...and so does TOR.
and perhaps because there both F2P and rift is only just now F2P upto level 20.. could have SOMETHING to do with it and yes i'm sure the IP's help those games as well
I don't really see the point you're trying to make here, but Aion is a few years older than Rift and has a far higher Xfire number than Rift, and no IP to profit from. LotrO had a great retention rate a year after its launch when it was still P2P.
i really dont think Xfire is a good ay to tell if a game is doing good or bad.
Bigest reason is i dont know anybody using Xfire to play there mmos. I have about 10 real life friends playing SWTOR and none of them have ever use xfire. I am in a guild of about 30 active players and more then 75 people in the guild and it would be safe to say that none of them ever use Xfire.
After this week-end, it seems it's holding on quite well. In server statistics it's almost at the levels before the 20th. A bit lower in xFire but still good retention.
To hear people talk about it , it's the end all and be all for gamers. In fact it's http://beta.xfire.com/ . VOIP system that tracks individual preferences and offers a community. Tried it didn't care for it. So i guess i get counted as one of the 20 million. The actual number of user is very likely far lower. But shhhhhh, don't let that get out people will be up in arms , since it's so important to this thread. More and more companies are offerring these services, Steam , Origin etc...
Using the 'not everyone uses xfire' card means any statistic ever used is utterly meaningless. The numbers are being used relative to themself, which makes the compariison completely valid.

What you can tell from XFire: More or fewer XFire users are playing a particular game. So in that sense, the 'trends' are valid. You could even go so far as to say that the trends mirror trends in the actual player populations. What you can't do it point to a large rise or drop in the XFire trends and say that it's a comparable rise or drop in any particular game's population.
So it's interesting, but ultimately meaningless.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

My guess is it would skew toward slightly older gamers.
Most games that have come out in the past 5 years have built-in voice chat, which is about the only thing xfire looks to be useful for. Plus there's alot of really old shown being played on there...some released over 10 years ago.
Wasn't there major downtime on the 28th? You should compare the high point of each weekend, which was sunday the 29th (48k hours)- doing that would probably be a better indicator than just blindly comparing saturdays.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

All I know is that on my server, the Jekk Jekk Tarr, I had my first server queue this past weekend of 25 or so people in front of me. It was the first time in a while I had a queue. All of the other servers generally ranged from standard to very heavy at that time. The number of people on the fleet and on each planet seems exactly the same to me as it did a few weeks ago and post the 1 month. I think the game is doing just fine. I did notice a decrease in MMORPG sandbox folks. Those were secretly flagged with a dark cloud so we knew who they were lol.

Honestly, I now hope this game fails miserably. Not because I hate the game, but the fanbase deserves what they get for all the vitriol and spew they embrace so heartly. When you have fanbois telling other fanbois to suffer, it just shows the level of maturity that community has. It's like the people in the lifeboats tellling those treading water to suck it up, after the ship hit the iceberg. WHAT KIND OF HUMAN BEINGS are these?! They deserve the worst of all outcomes IMO.

Companies will still spend money on MMO's because in general they usually make their money back and eventually profit. Do you think Blizzard will just stop work on Titan if SWTOR fails? Or ArenaNet won't release GW2 because theres no money to be made? No, the message that will be sent is that MMO players no longer want a shallow linear themepark MMO be it with or without VO. You don't get to the top of your market by simply copying what the current leader is doing. That has been the problem in the MMO market since WoW came out. Sure there are indy MMO's that come out with new stuff but they simply don't have the budget to make a game that will be polished enough for millions to play.
The truth is that SWTOR failing will force MMO companies to rethink what they are doing and design games based on what will keep players playing. There are plenty of MMO's set to release/launch for the next 2 years: GW2, TSW, Titan, W40k, DUST514(Ps3), Planetside 2, End of Nations, Zenimax Onlines MMO(elder scrolls?), Dominus, Archeage, TERA, Everquest 3(next?), Copernicus, Wildstar, and probably a handful of others we don't even know about yet. If anyone of those has even a moderate success you can bet that others will copy it into the ground just like they did with WoW.
Vangaurd failed but they still make MMO's.
Tabula Rasa Failed but they still make MMO's.
AoC failed but they still make MMO's.
WAR failed but they still make MMO's.
APB failed but they still make MMO's.
There has been a ton of money(Tabula Rasa and APB both had $100+ million in dev costs) lost in the MMO market and yet MMO's are still being made. Why? There is still money there and companies/investors want it, just like they will if SWTOR fails.

Well, you're going to be disappointed. The game is doing very well, and will for a long time. Are server mergers in the future? Wouldn't surprise me considering that happens in most MMOs. Fact is, they opened with too many servers, which is what I thought would happen. When you've got everyone and their grandmother whining because they have to sit in queue for half and hour during launch week, and then you decide to please the malcontents by overcompensating, then yeah...you risk having to merge some servers when the population levels off, as it does in ALL games not named WoW.
But hoping for failure? You're backing the wrong horse, there, friend. This game will be successful for a very long time.

"Statistics" is a discipline that includes a very structured method of getting an analyzing data. None of that includes anything that XFire is doing.
XFire doesn't clearly show anything other than the XFire users who were or are playing SWToR are playing it 30% less. Since there's no XFire graph of users, only hours, you can really only track the hours played over time, not the number of users who are playing over time.

Hmm, Xfire also showed a drop off for both Wow and EVE of 50% within a year and even 70-80% decrease in Xfire for both games for the past 2-2.5 years. Which would lead to the conclusion that WoW and EVE lost 50% of their playerbase the past year and even 70-80% of their subs in the past 2-2.5 years. Just saying -_-
So I'd suggest some more caution before just accepting without thinking any kinds of numbers and trends in any kind of tool. But to each their own ofc.
No one said that you should translate X-fire numbers into amount of subscribers. It can only be used to show trends, at least so far it has worked for that.
