The irony is that some of the shows are getting so bad that they're actually extremely entertaining, but for all the wrong reasons.
The History Channel's "Ancient Aliens" is one of the funniest shows on TV right now, without ever intending to be. One particular "expert" that's a regular on the show always has be cracking up whenever he opens his mouth, and yet, everything he says is meant to be serious.
That show is hilarious, if not outright insulting to the ancestors of the natives in the areas that they profile. Ever notice how the craziness of the hairdo seems to correlate directly to the outlandishness of the theory proposed by the experts they bring out?
There is a lot of great TV out there right now, especially on FX and AMC, but unfortunately it's the American Television Watchers' taste that is going down the toilet. The good ones are being cancelled or barely renewed while complete crap is pulling in tens of millions of viewers.
Anyone who can list a reality show as one of their favorite TV Shows is the problem, and unfortunately they seem to be in the vast majority. The other cause of the imbalance in quality shows vs crap shows is the invention of the DVR. As much as forwarding through commercials has greatly improved TV Watching, the perceived loss of advertisement revenue is killing off the good shows early. The ones who will sit through an additional 15 minutes of commercials per show even when they have a DVR are also the same people that can sit through 45 minutes of painfully scripted "Reality TV".
What sounds like the problem is you're watching mainstream televsision. Stuff like ABC, Fox, History Channel, etc. Try going outside of basic cable.. there are so many good shows! For example,
- Breaking Bad
- The Walking Dead
- The Borgias (2011)
- Mad Men
- Boardwalk Empire
- Game of Thrones
- Treme
Hasn't basic cable always been crap? Granted there are more terrible... terrible... reality shows and what not.
Going down the toilet? It splashed down into the septic tank almost a decade ago. (Right about when American Idol aired in my personal opinion)
Don't get me wrong, there are a few shows being produced out there that are pretty damn good. "Game of Thrones" and "Lie to Me" are two on my list. Its just that these gems are buried in so much shit that it makes me wonder if the good ones are really worth wading in to find.
No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. Hemingway
TV isn't going down the toilet so much as being left behind compared to Internet mediums. One good example is with music videos- it used to be that MTV was the king of the form, now it's Veoh. Indie directors are all moving online and TV is still dominated by ripoffs of ripoffs when it comes to reality TV. The last really amazing TV drama was The Wire and that's long since ended. Cartoons have really dropped in quality as well, but it's not like the artists of legendary shows like Samurai Jack or Avatar: The Last Airbender have vanished off the face of the earth- I think they're just tired of the mess that is the current TV medium and want to try other things.

Show I dont' like:
political "news" shows, whether it be CNN or FOX...
they get the dumbest 4 people they can...who most of the time are nobodys, they stick them around a table to argue... its like dude..what?
Shows that I hate:
Any realitiy model show where all it is, is a bunch of women yelling "that F****N B**** stole my man"
The the view, that show needs to die in a bad way.
