SWTOR vs. RIFT for game of the year, and general comparison.

MargulisMargulis Member CommonPosts: 1,614

I decided to fire up RIFT to get an idea of how that game compares to SWTOR - with all of the debate about which should be game of the year.

I've got to tell you, after playing a few months of SWTOR both in beta and since release - playing RIFT feels like going from junior high to high school.  Let's be honest, they are both theme park clones with their specific cherry on top to the theme park sundae - SWTOR with the story and voice acting and RIFT with the rifts.  But after you take each game's gimmick away and look at the rest of the game, RIFT just seems SOOOOOOOO much higher quality.

RIFT's character creation is much better since it actually has sliders and so forth - although it suffers the same "only human type race problem" as TOR.   RIFT's UI is great, the world actually FEELS alive with weather, swimming, world creatures, scripted npc events / chatter, ambient sounds, etc etc as opposed to the static and dead feeling of TOR.  Also just the general game is so much more complete, it's got a great functioning UI, very thorough achievement system, alternate advancement system, collection system, zone puzzles, nice graphics, guild functinoality, good auction house, etc.  I thnk both games suffer from poor pvp and a bit of a linear feel, with RIFT even worse than TOR due to having just 2 starting areas, but in general it just plays like a much higher quality game.

The argument could be made that TOR is new and it will get there, but when it comes to game of the year we aren't predicting how a game WILL be, it is "which mmo is the best right now in 2011."  To me, it's a bit baffling how SWTOR could win this category, because the only thing it seems to really do exceptionally well above RIFT is the story and voice acting.

The problem with RIFT is that they missed the most important feature for an mmo: Combat (at least for melee). This is what your are doing all the time, everything else is just bells and whistles.

The poor melee combat is the only reason why I didn't purchase it. You are hitting steel on steel, but there is no impact, no feeling. Its like cutting through paper. Take another game with no quests: Lineage 2. L2 is pure grind but I can grind for hours because the combat has a great feeling with impacts. In rift theres no feeling, it's weak.

At least in SWTOR it feels normal: there is not much impact but it feels normal as I am using a light saber. They have also added some force effects to the blows with good force sounds that make it feel powerful, and these also seem to grow stronger as you level up.

RIFT feels like a weakling with a paper sword, it's not fun.

He's not?  Not everyone experiences that issue, and even with the issue his point stands.  Rift's abilities are boring and lack any oomph.

teak it's there damn it lol you don't have to claim you experience it it's there for God sake stop an quit the B.D.F read the post read the first thread it's there until fixed sheeesh. Lol I'm not even mad it's funny but if your gonna make SWTOR look good own up to the mistakes and stop tryin to act like they are not there it's a confirmed majority issue.

You may ask an people will claim they haven't experienced I'm sorry but it's there there are so many videos about this gamebreaking issue, an yea PVP is also no were near perfect.

I apalogize that it hasn't came apparent to you and your soon to be testifiers(because I'm sure you'll say I asked aroun and no one has not agreed), hell do a video first what class you are?

If your an inqi try healing or a sage try healing, try to do overload after doing combos, try to use stomp as an warrior, and the list goes on.

Then if that isn't clear to you and others try mounting and I mean moving once it succesfully loaded.

No one has yet posted videos to counter these, someone posted one an it isn't even scratching the surface.

If someone doesnt PvP there is a very good chance they havent noticed it.  i never said it wasnt there, I just said not everyone experiences it.  This is fact.   You said the poster was lying, and he clearly wasnt as his post had nothing to do with the issue.  You just suck at reading comprehension.

I have absolutely no responsiveness or ability delay in SWTOR. Combat is smooth, my skills launch as soon as I press my keys.

I have played some other games with this problem, so I know how it feels (i.ex: Perfect World had this when playing on the Asian severs from here. When the game moved here the problem went away, so in this case it was caused by server distance) (and no, the game was not lagging).

That makes no sense, ebcause what's funny is that they haven't realized it happening when it is, there is not one class that can hide it, work around it, it's actually there you could say you didn't experience it but it is there

No because your lying right now a matter of fact you talked about melee in rift being bad, and claim's SWTOR melee is great?

Now you can come back to saying their combat is all high and mighty once they fix the issue.

Shit when they fix it I show(did I really say show lol) as hell might have some fun with SWTOR myself but I dislike the pretend game.

I am lying because I don't have the same problem as you? Yeah right. image

This happened in several other games in the past. Some people have the problem, others don't. This was usually caused by server distance (and there was no lag), I don't know if it is the same cause or not in SWTOR, but many of us don't have this problem.

Furthermore, this is a problem/bug that can be fixed for those who have it. Whereas the poor melee combat execution in RIFT is not a bug. An mmo can have all the features in the world, if the main thing you are doing all the time - combat - is not fun it won't help it.

Seriously, when people prefer to grind their way in L2 only for the fun combat there's a problem.

It's great to get people to say exactly what you want them to say,  no your lying because of what's in yellow, your not having a problem with it because right now no matter what the truth is, you believe it's smooth and fluid and great even if you did see it. Someone on the threads said the same exact thing and even mentioned they saw a few delays here and there, it's in thread number 2.

I'm sorry but [right now] Rift 1 up's it in combat, because unfortunately, it's like a tumor, you know what those do right, I know you do.

Name me some games that fixed these fast in less than hell 3 month. This issue is not easy fixed, Bioware combat designer already admitted but if you read the threads people already unsubbed and so has many of their guilds, a lot  won't re sub until it's fixed and what not. If you read my history you'll note I bring it up every were to try and humble people, and that I'm going to support the issue, Warhammer had it, Aion did, WoW didn't from start, EQ didn't from start, Rift didn't from launch(I'm sorry), so that being said it's best to be aware of your mmo's flaws before praising it.

SWTOR does have the size and does have the story that's indeed a on up on rift. It does have the potential to be great but we were talking about [right now] right?

But yea this is my last post against you about this subject(I'm going to forget most likely)

May the force and common sense be with you image
