Hello all,

Disclaimer: I am looking for a MMORPG I can play asap that is operating beyond alpha or beta testing. Please dont suggest GW2 & Secret World or anything of the like that is not current.

I am currently looking for a MMORPG that catch my interest. Every MMORPG I play as of recent has given me atleast one doubt in playing it. Yes I fell victim to the hype monster a couple of times and come for help after playing SWTOR. These are mmorpg's I have tried if I am wrong in my reason for not playing them please correct me I would greatly appreciate it.

Final Fantasy XI: Few months ago really decided to give this one a go and after a month of playing everyday it became very tiring praying that when I log on there would be somebody on my friendslist or linkshell that would come group with me. Because I couldnt find anyone to group with I couldnt progress at all and this caused me to unsubscribe.

SWTOR: I love BioWare games but the recent batch rub me the wrong way. This game feels like multi-player Mass Effect had a baby with Star Wars. The last game of theirs I enjoyed was Baldur's Gate 2. The dialog was good but thats about all the game has going for it. I unsubscribed because I was incredibly bored with  the bland storyline and cookie cutter combat.

EverQuest: This was my first mmorpg that I loved very much. I had such great adventures in the beginning full of danger and friends. When I hit max level I started raiding and when Gates of Discord came out and Uqua pre-nerf was insanity I quit because SoE butchered this game completely. I really love the idea of truely epic quests.

EverQuest 2: RTM Support & Cash shop made me run.

Age of Conan: Finished tutorial, got lost, found teleport guy whom said "You need expansion sorry guy." Game Over.

Eve: Played it. Got a ship. Got blown up by pirate. Rage quit. Game Over.

WoW: Panda's made me run.

Ultima Online: Havent tried sense EA got their hands on it. I dont trust EA as far as I can throw them. I liked the PvE aspect and lore but I am scared to try because EA butchers.. everything?

Guild Wars: Graphic style and combat system turn me off big time but I own all versions of it.

Anarchy Online: When you can pull about 30 mobs in a group and level 50 times in less than 1 hour it gets kinda pointless. So I quit.

MapleStory: Chibi's made me run.

DAoC: Zergs made me run.

Warhammer Online: Instanced pvp endlessly w/ scenario's suck and also world wasnt really a world. More of a chapter game.

Lineage 2: Point to click made me run.

Aion: End game = One sided fist fight PvP made me run.

Darkfall: I really liked this games graphic style and combat but I dont like the idea that I have to pretty much AFK or bot to get anywhere against veterans, game felt kinda dead.

Lord of the Rings Online: I was a fan of the books but this has zero cannon and turbine game graphics are terrible.

D&DO: Turbine graphics are terrible and its instanced city.

I know it sounds like a rant but I really would appreciate some help with this and any corrections to my opinions would be welcomed. I want a game that I can log on for 2 hours a day and have a blast doing PvP or PvE.

    Might I suggest Ragnarok Online?

Rather old game, still good. Has a nice aged feel to it. There are many...many classes, something around...

Novice-> Knight, Merchant, Mage, Rouge, Cleric. These may sound generic but...

Each class branches into two other classes, which branch into another class that resets your level (not necessary to do, but recommended if you want to not be weak) and then those classes go into yet another class... And even still when a Novice there are 2-3 classes that do not branch into anything to pick as well.

The graphics are 2.5d similar to Trickster Online, if you can bare the somewhat chibi style, this game is a very good one. If I recall correctly the leveling isn't too bad either.

The leveling works like so: Pretty much your "character" level which affects your stats and "Skill" level which affects your skills (this one gives you skill points) Skill level eventually lags slightly behind character.

If that doesn't suit your fancy Rift is always a good one as well. I'm currently trialing it and I must say, it is a very nice mmorpg. You pretty much pick 3 classes and put skill points into the tree as you wish, you unlock new skills not by putting points into the skill directly, but by learning new ones on the tree ( What I mean to say is, Most of the tree that you put points into are passive effects, when you put enough points in (In intervals of 2-4 etc) you get a new skill. You can rank skills up by paying skill trainers, you can also reset all of your points for a fee that increases with the amount of points you have, not by amount of times reset.

As for FFXI, if that is your issue, what level are you? If your still low/new, I suggest Joining Grounds of Valor burn parties, in Gusgen Mines 10-35 and Crawlers Nest 35-75 (Usually) then going to skill up in Kuftal Tunnel/...the place that it leads too (sorry :X can't recall) Find a nice Linkshell to help you with your limit breaks and you'll be set to go into Abyssea, once in there, finding a party is a breeze as ANY job. Just make sure your skills are capped and your armor is supbar before entering Abyssea, after that you'll know what to do.

I wish you luck in your MMO endeavors! Have a pleasant experience.

Why is Vanguard not on your list?

Honestly, it's the MMO that feels most like the original Everquest. It has a huge huge world, a rich crafting system and interesting classes. I really dislike the character models, but the game still looks pretty good for an MMO (especially one that's nearly 5 years old).

Though, there is a catch, of course. The population is really low. I haven't checked it recently, but that was how it was six months back or so. Everybody's moved on to the server named Telon now (it's a US server), so make sure you pick that one if you give the game a try.

How the hell you do all that and just skip Rift? I got no idea you seem like a mmo hopper. Just wait for GW2 sorry.

I'm with Puremalice on this one... Why is Rift not on your list? It would hold you over for a while and the PvP is pretty fun pre-50.

    try life, it's a blast.

I work full time and like having a couple hours to myself gaming on MMO's.

Also I need forgot about those two games let me add:

Vanguard: Pretty good but due to SoE's butchering ways they have neglected this game and no added content in ages. I cant find anybody to play with besides roleplayers.

Rift: Played the beta and wasnt impressed with the gimmick of rifts, it felt very repetitive and cookie cutter.

  • tkoreapertkoreaper Member UncommonPosts: 412

How are Rift's gimmicks? They're dynamic gameplay features that are optional and add to the game's story. The major invasions are even better. Rather than just your typical MMO where the world is lifeless and your only options are to quest, dungeon crawl, and pvp... you get something that is out of the norm and adds life to the zone with rewards that are very useful. I don't think you really gave Rift the attention it deserved... especially if you haven't played it since beta. Try it, a lot has changed snce then and it's a completely different game once you hit 50... believe me, it's worth it.

You lost credibility when you said Lotro (turbine) graphics are terrible. Lotro has some of the best graphics in mmo's. The characters aren't great, but the landscape graphics are amazing.

Didnt see City of Heroes From your list i bet you just forgot it though:P Still the best of those type games i think.

IMO the OP just doesn't know what they want and expects to get the full feel for the game within the first 20 minutes of play... Most games don't become great until you hit max level (Where the majority of the people are). Starting a pre-existing game is always tough because you missed the leveling crowd so you're left trying to be lucky enough to find someone's alt or another new person like yourself. Suggestion... Use chat and try to find someone to group with, it'll help ease the pain.

Well, perhaps not that far, but if what he wrote is accurate he is rather prone to snap judgements.

Hate hate hate hate almost liked hate hate hate...is he sure this is the genre he's even looking for?  Maybe FPS or RTS would suit better?

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

Okay good arguement there I see what you mean. In regards to Ragnarok Online I played it when it was P2P back in the day and it was pretty good but its the chibiness. City of Heroes is a solid game but I dont like playing a game in tights forever on my character. Correction for DDO & LOTRO in -my- opinion the graphics are terrible. Not really so much the graphics just the artistic design of both games are similar.

In Rift I had a difficult time knowing what to spec in because I had three different tree's. Is there any specific specs I should follow or is it pretty random?

Really you guys I am not trying to "attack" the mmo's listed. This is why I asked for corrections to my current blunt assumptions and conclusions. It would make sense that some people takes it as a personal attack when I am speaking of a game that they enjoy.

I would recommend looking on the forums and do some searching around for some leveling builds. You get to pick your first 3 souls while going through the starter area, but after that the other 5 souls can be purchased in your main capital. It's recommended to pick a soul with a pet for at least one of your souls to help you a bit, but it's not absolutely necessary if you know what you're doing. What class were you thinking of trying?

Really a toss up between a rogue and a mage.

    image

  • tkoreapertkoreaper Member UncommonPosts: 412

I know the goto site for mages is bluedots.org for guides and such (Free btw). As for the rogue there's a few guides on the official forums as I recently hit 50 on my rogue and there are a lot of fun specs to try for leveling.

  • tkoreapertkoreaper Member UncommonPosts: 412

I would personally recommend Rogue... I enjoyed leveling him a lot, not so much my mage. also a rogue can Heal, DPS, and Tank which is nice if you want to give them a try. You're not a main tank healer by any means, but you're excellent support and bring a lot of buffs as a bard.

  • Alphabeta2Alphabeta2 Member Posts: 35

So you've tried all of the normal, highly advertised meh games.  You should look beyond that and do a little research into what there is out there.  I admit that I was once in the same boat as you, looking for something new and thriilling and found that I couldn't quite satisfy my hunger (Except for XI I still play that, if you come back PM me XD I'd party or help get you into that) but another game I'm really enjoying is Bounty Hounds Online, I'm usually on in the afternoons if you decide to join that (Names Clip) its a fun, sci-fi game with pets, a decent crafting system, flashy movies, ridiculous bosses and very very nice graphics and music.

In Rift a rogue can dps, HEAL and TANK?

    That sounds ridiculous.

  • tkoreapertkoreaper Member UncommonPosts: 412

What is so ridiculous about it? Classes is Rift are very broad... There are only 4 classes, but many many souls. I don't understand why you're confused by this, as if no other games have done something similar. Riftstalkers (rogue tanking soul) are extremely fun and don't know of any game that has anything similar. Bards (support soul) aren't really a healing soul. They bring a lot of buffs and heal by doing damage.

Rogue, Warrior, Mage, and Cleric are just the broad type of class... the souls are what differentiate even further. You can stick to WoW where they have a hundred classes if you like.

    And just to be correct:

The Thief or Rogue is a character class in many role-playing games, including Dungeons & Dragons, Final Fantasy, World of Warcraft and many MMORPGs. Thieves are usually stealthy and dextrous characters able to disarm traps, pick locks, and perform backstabs from hiding. Thieves are usually capable of melee or ranged combat, and tend to be focused on dodging attacks rather than withstanding damage. They often attack by dual-wielding daggers or other small one-handed weapons, relying on speed and number of strikes rather than sheer damage output. Thieves usually have a stealth ability, allowing them to disappear from sight, often this is combined with attacking an unaware opponent to inflict high damage. Thieves are usually restricted to the lighter armors, leather and the like. While thieves typically cannot practice magic, they might use scrolls or magic items in some games. In most fantasy settings, smaller and more agile fantasy races like elves, gnomes and hobbits are particularly suited for the thief class.

It says nothing about not being able to tank or heal. They're not realling using spells as a Bard... They "sing the songs of battle, play heart-stirring cadences, embolden their allies, and cripple their enemies through rhythm and rhyme" according to the website.

What?  I played Rift for three months and had two characters at level cap, one of which was a raiding toon.  So yeah, I know a little bit about the game.  And if he didn't like TOR, Lotro, or the countless other themepark games he tried, I'm pretty sure he isn't going to like Rift, which is on the opposite end of the themepark spectrum from Everquest, which seems to be his favorite game.

  • melton80melton80 Member Posts: 54

There are a few good games mentioned by others and if you want to try Rift i say go for it, but in my opinion rift wasn't very good, not only was it boring to level since you level so fast it isn't even funny but at end game you could finish almost everything up in a matter of a month. The class system in the game is also dumb and the population has been going dowhill since 3 months into the game going live, just go look at their server board almost always low besides maybe 1 or 2 servers at most.

What was your character and guild's name? Don't tell me you don't remember, and 3 months is hardly enough especially since it wasn't recently. People need to learn that games change (At least ones that update as much as Rift... It's not like WoW where you wait a year for content)... we're on to patch 1.7 and A LOT has changed and been added. All of the stuff that Rift should have been released with has since been added and since you quit after 3 months you missed out on the most important parts.

    To GrandoReaper,

I one suggest, in April, Secret World.

Im currently playing SWTOR, im just holding tight, with it. Its till fun so thats what counts.

But if you want a game NOW, then id suggest,

    -APB (reloaded)

    -Starcraft 2

    -MineCraft

    -Dungeon Defenders

    -Leauge of Legends (LoL)

-*Chance of Fail* Fallen Earth - by Gamersfirst

Besides these, id just tell you to stick with SWTOR for now,

besides that, here's a website you can start your search on,
