LF F2P Popular MMORPG Open world that

ihaveabuihaveabu Member UncommonPosts: 10

I'm looking for a F2P MMORPG that meets these conditions:

1. Open world (ie: WoW, PW, Forsaken World, Runes of Magic, etc.) Games like AoC and Guild Wars would be considered instanced.

2. Cash Shop items are either:

    a. Vanity and convenience items only (ie: decorative items, gear dyes, teleport runes, etc)

    b. Gear and "super" items are ok only if they can be acquired without pay (trade with other players for in game currency)

3. Very populated servers. This is the highest priority to be honest.

4. Has PVP and PVE

So far I'm looking at the following:

Runes of Magic:

Seems to be the largest F2P mmo but is known for the non-vanity item shop. Basically if I want to PVP I need to pay a lot of money for gear. Players used to be able to trade cash shop items for in game currency but that has been removed because of RMT issues. But it's apparently the most popular F2P mmo...

Forsaken World:

It's designed with Western players in mind, so the item shop is supposed to be more vanity/convenience items than game-breaking super gear. Any Forsaken World players please confirm

LotRo and D&D Online:

Apparently the item shop is great and there is almost no pay to win, but PVP in DDO and LotRo is an afterthought, so idk about these.

Apparently Forsaken World has super items that buff gear, but you can earn them in came w/o paying:

Apparently Talisman Online is another decent one. Idk if it's well populated or not tho...

Everquest 2 is free to play too. You can play with a bronze account but if you spend 1000 station cash you become silver member forever wich will give you some interesting bonuses.

Aw! just thought the way it works you may consider it instanced.

VERY few instances within the game.  Most of the content is in the open world and has a Free For All PvP system.  This creates opprotunity for meaningful open world PvP over territory, resources, and preferable XP Spots. (There is an anti-PK mechanisim that punishes players for killing players that are not flagged for combat)

    2. Cash Shop items are either:

        a. Vanity and convenience items only (ie: decorative items, gear dyes, teleport runes, etc)

Cash Shop items are either Vanity items or consumables that buff your toon in different ways that accelerate leveling.  There were some promos that offered weapons when the game first launched but to my knowledge, there are no Weapons or Armor of Pwnage for sale in the cash shop.

    3. Very populated servers. This is the highest priority to be honest.

Before the game with F2P....most of the L2 players migrated to private servers, leaving only 2 active servers that had low pop.

Since going F2P....both original servers how have Heavy population and they had to open up 3 more, which are also Heavy Pop at just about any time of the day.

    4. Has PVP and PVE

While Lineage 2 does feature some meaningful PvE (Raid Bosses w/ simple AI), the game mostly focuses on PvP.  All the monsters you find in the game are mearly fodder for you to level up on.  While there are some quests in the game, they are NOT the main mechanisim to level up on (as you'd find in WOW, Aion, etc.)  Quests will get you to level 41-42.  After that, leveling involves finding a good hunting spot with level appropriate monsters and grinding it out.  Partying is HIGHLY encouraged but not required.

PvP involves meaningful open world PvP over hunting spots, territory, etc.  There are regularly scheduled Castle & Fortress Sieges that take place between the players.  One clan / alliance (group of clans) can lay siege to a Castle or Fortress that another clan / alliance owns.  To the winner yields perks to the players of the clan / alliance that owns it.

This is very much a GROUP PvP game.

Lineage 2 is a MMO from another era, but still holds up today.  The graphics (for its time) are really beautiful and the sound track is pretty awesome.  It was one of the last FFA MMORPGs.....which really brings back that wild-wild-west feel while playing.  It strikes a fair balance of risk vs reward and has enough teeth to consequences for playing poorly that drives behavior to change for the better....but is not so punative that it forces you to quit after failing at something.

The game's primary strength is the open ended (and player driven) endgame content that comes from the ebb & flow of power & drama created from relationships & trechery among the servers clans and alliances.  The players create the endgame content, not the developers.

Anyhow...by no means is L2 the ultimate MMO...but it is a game that is made from a different mold than the WOW clones and is now Free 2 Play.

yea everquest 2 has instanced zones similar to AoC.

I will look into Lineage 2. If the game is true open world and it's got very populated servers it's definitely an option.

The only reason I looked at the ones I did and ignored others was because I'm looking for a heavily populated F2P mmo

I just returned to the game after taking 3-4 years off so some things have changed that I'm not fully knowledgeable about, but as far as I know, the only instances there are in the game are:

Kamakola - Small instance that a group can take on a Raid boss (or bosses).  You can only run one per day so you don't have to worry about players being stuck in instances all day.

Olympiad Match - Players that reach a high enough level (and meet some other requirments) can participate in an Olympiad Match that pits you against a competitor in your same class type (Phantom Ranger vs Phantom Ranger, Palidan vs Paladin, etc)  These are also limited I think and you get ported out as soon as the fight is over.

But largely, MOST people are out and about in the open world.  As a matter of fact, it's often times hard to find a good leveling spot because there are sooo many people.  In some cases, you may have to "muscle" someone out of there spot to get a good one.  This causes alot of spontanious open world PvP.

    As for the population....

Since the game has gone F2P, there has been a mass exodus from the private servers back to the official NCSoft servers.  They've had to open 3 more servers to accomodate the population increase.  I was off of work the last few weeks and I've logged in the Morning, Mid-Day, Afternoon, and Late Night......and I've NEVER seen any of the servers have a status less than "Heavy".

If you want to know anymore about the game; PvP Flagging System, Classes, Races, etc....let me know

why was everyone playing on private servers before? aren't private servers used to avoid paying the monthly fee, but in turn are not supported by the devs?

People played private servers because the XP & Drop Rates were accelerated and was much easier to get to endgame for PvP.  While on the official NCSoft servers, L2 has had a notorious reputation for a long leveling grind and BOTS due to stingy loot drops and high cost for items in game.  AND it was $15 a month

Now, in addition to L2 going Free to Play, they've also increased XP rates by 200%, Free top level buffs to any character lower than lvl 75, and of course all the other buffs you can get from cash shop.

It used to take a good solid 2-3 months of casual play (2-3 hours a day) to get to lvl 45-50.  Now you can get to lvl 41-45 in about 7 hours of game play.  Just to give you an idea how they've streamlined the leveling process.

Now that XP rates are faster on the official servers, and its free to play.....all the private server folk have moved over the official servers.

So besides lineage 2 any others?
  • ihaveabuihaveabu Member UncommonPosts: 10

I'm downloading Runes of Magic now to see if I like it. It looks almost identical to wow from what I've seen.

Now about Lineage 2. I keep reading that it's really grind-heavy. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

  • lalartulalartu Member UncommonPosts: 437

From what you described, I would steer clear of Lineage 2 for the following reasons:

1 - horrible WASD controls, it's meant to be a point and click game and overall feels and plays really weird compared to the other games you've named. I forced myself to play it for 2 days hoping to get over and get used to the horrible controls, but I just couldn't.

2 - the engine is very old and is not optimized for the number of people you'll see on the screen. in the noob town, even on my PC that handles Skyrim on high settings just fine, the game was 2-3 fps if not slower because it's not optimized to handle so many people at once

3 - too grindy past lvl 50, too weird looking for today's standards, simplified gameplay (imo)

    what I would recommend:

1 - give that new game Dragona a go (check the add in the background), it's an Aion clone, it's f2p and it seems like it's growing fast. the world is pretty too. PVP is ok

2 - LOTRO - the PVP is different, but a lot of fun. it's not an afterthought either as PVPing opens up special dungeons and gives everyone on the server special buffs if your team wins. You have to have a lvl 10 character to open up the PVP feature from the monster side though and you need to be at least lvl 50 (I think, i forgot) to play with your own character. but playing as an orc is frigging awesome. On top of all that, it's one of the biggest online worlds and definitely the most atmospheric/beautiful one.

3 - Aika Online - somewhat instanced in a sense that there are 5 big worlds, but they're exact replicas of each other and you can still pvp successfully in your own world too. the pvp part is actually fun and you can pretty much attack/kill anyone/anywhere

4 - Eden Eternal - you can only play on EU servers at the moment as US server is undergoing a three months long maintenance, but the PVP in that game is quite solid and brutal. that is, if you can get over the super cute cartoony graphics hehe. I would actually be playing this right now if I weren't lagging so much most of the time

I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs
