I'm looking for a F2P MMORPG that meets these conditions:
1. Open world (ie: WoW, PW, Forsaken World, Runes of Magic, etc.) Games like AoC and Guild Wars would be considered instanced.
2. Cash Shop items are either:
a. Vanity and convenience items only (ie: decorative items, gear dyes, teleport runes, etc)
b. Gear and "super" items are ok only if they can be acquired without pay (trade with other players for in game currency)
3. Very populated servers. This is the highest priority to be honest.
4. Has PVP and PVE
So far I'm looking at the following:
Runes of Magic:
Seems to be the largest F2P mmo but is known for the non-vanity item shop. Basically if I want to PVP I need to pay a lot of money for gear. Players used to be able to trade cash shop items for in game currency but that has been removed because of RMT issues. But it's apparently the most popular F2P mmo...
Forsaken World:
It's designed with Western players in mind, so the item shop is supposed to be more vanity/convenience items than game-breaking super gear. Any Forsaken World players please confirm
LotRo and D&D Online:
Apparently the item shop is great and there is almost no pay to win, but PVP in DDO and LotRo is an afterthought, so idk about these.
Comments
Apparently Forsaken World has super items that buff gear, but you can earn them in came w/o paying:

Apparently Talisman Online is another decent one. Idk if it's well populated or not tho...

Everquest 2 is free to play too. You can play with a bronze account but if you spend 1000 station cash you become silver member forever wich will give you some interesting bonuses.
Aw! just thought the way it works you may consider it instanced.
yea everquest 2 has instanced zones similar to AoC.
I will look into Lineage 2. If the game is true open world and it's got very populated servers it's definitely an option.
The only reason I looked at the ones I did and ignored others was because I'm looking for a heavily populated F2P mmo
I just returned to the game after taking 3-4 years off so some things have changed that I'm not fully knowledgeable about, but as far as I know, the only instances there are in the game are:
Kamakola - Small instance that a group can take on a Raid boss (or bosses). You can only run one per day so you don't have to worry about players being stuck in instances all day.
Olympiad Match - Players that reach a high enough level (and meet some other requirments) can participate in an Olympiad Match that pits you against a competitor in your same class type (Phantom Ranger vs Phantom Ranger, Palidan vs Paladin, etc) These are also limited I think and you get ported out as soon as the fight is over.
But largely, MOST people are out and about in the open world. As a matter of fact, it's often times hard to find a good leveling spot because there are sooo many people. In some cases, you may have to "muscle" someone out of there spot to get a good one. This causes alot of spontanious open world PvP.
As for the population....
Since the game has gone F2P, there has been a mass exodus from the private servers back to the official NCSoft servers. They've had to open 3 more servers to accomodate the population increase. I was off of work the last few weeks and I've logged in the Morning, Mid-Day, Afternoon, and Late Night......and I've NEVER seen any of the servers have a status less than "Heavy".
If you want to know anymore about the game; PvP Flagging System, Classes, Races, etc....let me know
why was everyone playing on private servers before? aren't private servers used to avoid paying the monthly fee, but in turn are not supported by the devs?
People played private servers because the XP & Drop Rates were accelerated and was much easier to get to endgame for PvP. While on the official NCSoft servers, L2 has had a notorious reputation for a long leveling grind and BOTS due to stingy loot drops and high cost for items in game. AND it was $15 a month
Now, in addition to L2 going Free to Play, they've also increased XP rates by 200%, Free top level buffs to any character lower than lvl 75, and of course all the other buffs you can get from cash shop.
It used to take a good solid 2-3 months of casual play (2-3 hours a day) to get to lvl 45-50. Now you can get to lvl 41-45 in about 7 hours of game play. Just to give you an idea how they've streamlined the leveling process.
Now that XP rates are faster on the official servers, and its free to play.....all the private server folk have moved over the official servers.
I'm downloading Runes of Magic now to see if I like it. It looks almost identical to wow from what I've seen.
Now about Lineage 2. I keep reading that it's really grind-heavy. Can anyone confirm/deny this?
From what you described, I would steer clear of Lineage 2 for the following reasons:
1 - horrible WASD controls, it's meant to be a point and click game and overall feels and plays really weird compared to the other games you've named. I forced myself to play it for 2 days hoping to get over and get used to the horrible controls, but I just couldn't.
2 - the engine is very old and is not optimized for the number of people you'll see on the screen. in the noob town, even on my PC that handles Skyrim on high settings just fine, the game was 2-3 fps if not slower because it's not optimized to handle so many people at once
3 - too grindy past lvl 50, too weird looking for today's standards, simplified gameplay (imo)
what I would recommend:
1 - give that new game Dragona a go (check the add in the background), it's an Aion clone, it's f2p and it seems like it's growing fast. the world is pretty too. PVP is ok
2 - LOTRO - the PVP is different, but a lot of fun. it's not an afterthought either as PVPing opens up special dungeons and gives everyone on the server special buffs if your team wins. You have to have a lvl 10 character to open up the PVP feature from the monster side though and you need to be at least lvl 50 (I think, i forgot) to play with your own character. but playing as an orc is frigging awesome. On top of all that, it's one of the biggest online worlds and definitely the most atmospheric/beautiful one.
3 - Aika Online - somewhat instanced in a sense that there are 5 big worlds, but they're exact replicas of each other and you can still pvp successfully in your own world too. the pvp part is actually fun and you can pretty much attack/kill anyone/anywhere
4 - Eden Eternal - you can only play on EU servers at the moment as US server is undergoing a three months long maintenance, but the PVP in that game is quite solid and brutal. that is, if you can get over the super cute cartoony graphics hehe. I would actually be playing this right now if I weren't lagging so much most of the time
I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs
