No, tons of people played both, and most prefer WOW over EQ2. Even the EQ1 fans say EQ2 isn't as good. It seems that the only one fooling himself is you.

Wasn't it Verant who made EQ1? I know that they're part of Sony or something or other, but as far as I know they were the brains behind the original EQ. After SOE took over though with Luclin and everything after, EQ turned to garbage. Almost everything they've produced so far seems to be subpar at best, and EQ2 doesn't hold a flame to it's ancestor, sorry to say.
Oh, and for the record, I have played both games, and I was most looking forward to playing EQ2 when the games were set to release. WoW beta didn't impress me that much, things started to get on my nerves. I have to say though that after 3 weeks of even more pointless grinding and graphics that didn't meet the bragging SOE fed us, EQ2 turned out to be more of a disappointment, so I went back to WOW.
Do I think that WoW is the best game of all time though? No, but it is better than EQ2.
Originally posted by WarchildGT After an hour of play, I'm really not that impressed. I am 27 years old.
I know exactly how you feel, as I'm also 27-years-old and World of Warcraft bored me to death. What I think people are so crazy about WoW for is two fold: On one hand, it was able to recruit people unfamiliar with the MMORPG industry who just bought it because they thought it was Blizzard's next release in the Warcraft series. These people probably only got into it because of the company name and the fun, quality products they've released in the past, including Diablo 2 and Starcraft. On the other hand, WoW is hands down the most polished, professionally developed fantasy level grind MMORPG to date. The problem is, older guys like you and me aren't into that anymore. We've been level grinding in various games for over a decade now and it's just plain boring. The children seem to love it, though.
Yup you seem to know it all. Im a 35 year old child. I never really played another warcraft game that long maybe Diablo and some warcraft 1. Other than that World of Warcraft was the only mmorph that caught my eye and its the first mmorph that im paying for. I never wanted to pay monthly fees before because i thought it was a waste of money. Just because you dont like it, stop saying it just children playing because there are alot of different age groups playing and were are having fun. I wanted to try City of heros, bad, so i fudge my info abit and got into the european beta and to tell you it was fun till about level 8 or so. Talk about grind, it has it. All mmorpg's have this grind so your not going to get away from it. An hour of play sure does give a person a good impression of a game, your not even out of the starting area in that time.
I was very impressed with WoW. it took the good elements of other games, weeded out the bad things (like downtime, no sense of purpose, harsh death penalty and more), added a beautiful world filled in with details, concentrated all the gazzilions classes from other games in 9 and delivered an excellent and polished game.
Yes, it is not very innovative (but it has some new things, like warrior has never been like this before) meaning it has no revolutionary features. Where it innovates is in the small things and the amount of class the game has. It is downright immersive.
And yes, the quests, if broke down, are, more or less, the usual. But they added escort missions, stealth missions, stealing missions, exploration missions and so on. Plus... there are the specials. What you say about a quest where you have to complete a ritual of adulthood, drink a scented beverage and get a vision, of a ghost wolf. You have to follow him until he brings you to the elder shaman.
Or, to get your Fire Totem, after getting the items you need, you proceed to the summit of the peak where YOU, and only YOU can see and fight this strange elemental beast. the others see you fighting air.
Or after retrieving the amulet of the deceased wife for a Night elf, see him cry for the loss and then witness the appeareance of the wife ghost, followed by a touching sequence.
WoW and CoH have much in common i wager, they are both very player friendly. no useless time spent doing useless things here. Immediate and fun combat that is NOT just press attack and leave (you do that and you die). the difference is that WoW has simply more things than CoH. Beside crafting, more quests, more variety in the zones, EACH and every single zones has loads of things inside. From furbolg camps to underground mines/caves, to tank refuelling points, to radiated cities, ranches, hunting lodges, excavation fields, mystical strange things from the old age..... and the list go so on that you have no idea.
I frankly could not care less WoW is not THAT innovative. it finally did the Fantasy MMorpg right. and that is what counts for me. a really fun game.
Have a nice day.

But to the orginal poster frakly I dont even believe you even played the game I challange him to give us his char name and the server he played on..I seriously just think your hear to try to bash the game on the slide.
Now to the people that say this game appeals to the kiddies well no arguement there, but It also appeals to the older folks with tons of Guilds out there that will recruit nothing but mature older people. This game is full of old UO, DAOC, AO, ect old school guilds...
Simple put this game is the best MMORPG to date and I thank my lucky stars that it finally came out.. With dissapointments like FFX, Horizons, SB, COH,L2, and the Matrix Online over the past 2 years its good to have something to finally play and truely enjoy even after the first month.

Hunt/Kill mission. Sure, at the time, it appears that only you are fighting this apparition, but five minutes later, the next player in line is up on the peak doing the exact same thing. Kinda makes you feel special, eh?

it finally did the Fantasy MMorpg right.
They finally did the "fantasy class/level grind MMORPG" right. I'm not sick of the "fantasy" or "MMORPG" in that phrase.
whatever. i challenge you to find better quests out there.
know what? there ain't any.

Exactly.
So what's the answer then? How about an MMORPG with no quests? Does that sound ridiculous? I'll tell you what sounds ridiculous: You've got an online environment with 20,000 to 600,000 people interacting in it, and most of them are running errands for mindless NPCs.
What if the world was arranged so that players worked for and with other players? Why are MMORPGs still being designed as single player games? Sorry, but nothing about doing chores for thankless NPCs makes me feel like part of a "community." What's the point of the game being massive or even multiplayer if everyone's chasing carrots on sticks (quests)?
that has been tried already, Rent. UO and SWG are mostly like that. Eve too, i am told. Especially UO. No NPCs interaction at all, practically. all left to the players. They are two drastically different way of playing. Virtual World Vs Online Game.
Virtual World tends to require much more time than an Online game as if you do not put effort in it, you get nothing in return. Online game is like a theme park, you got your attractions and you go on them. I find both genre appealing in certain ways, but i feel like the community is not ready for real Virtual Worlds (Being a Roleplayer OR getting immersed in the world is almost a requirement for it).
I think WoW is a great Online Game. Certainly is not a Virtual World.

I bet all this people here bitching about WoW havent played it yet. I was one of them!! I critizedthe "cheesy graphics" and the fact that, after all it is another phantasy MMORPG. I was playing EQ2 by the time and was coming from SWG (which i still play).
Well...after huge and lenghty discussions, I decided to try it. Thought that huge amount of people couldn't be wrong all at once....there had to be something there. Luckly, i got a copy of WoW (because at that time it was sold out -because of the server stability issue they had-)
Well....it is amazing...the "cheesy graphics" turned out to be a wonderful, colorful world, full of all kind of landscapes and full of all kind of creatures.....remember, i was playing EQ2 which supposedly has the "best" graphics now; NOTHING TO COMPARE!! WoW was light years ahead of EQ2!! yes...WoW graphics have no texture but, surprisingly, that doesn't matter....it is so well done, that it doesn't matters.
Quests?? well, coming from EQ2 and SWG i can tell you this...you dont want boring and lenghty quests nor years of grinding to advance your char. And that is exactly what WoW has. Quests are good enough to challenge yourself, have a story line (so u feel u are "pursuing" someting in the game) but are not that boring thing of "kill 35 XXX" and XXX spawns every hour!! see?
SWG tried a world without quests...players driven...conclussion? Everybody complained about lack of content. There were hundreds of merchants with zillions of credits without no other purpose, and since the game is all based in grind after grind...no one wants to change the char!! result? people quit. (Not to mention the Jedi system)
EQ2 have tons of quests...boring and more grind than SWG. Solo? not an option after lvl 20 upper. Now they are introducing some content on that...but, what for?
Well...i dont want to start a game vs. game here.... just brought it up to let you know my exp.
Quests are intended to give you a story line in the game, not to be a game in which you exists and have no purpose....without quests, the only other option available is grind....and believe me...that is worst!! And, as in RL...you have to put some effort if you want to advance.
But what really is amazing in WoW is the PvP system....wow, dont have words to express!!!
Wanna have fun with no quests and interacting with other players??? Man...you should try PvP in WoW!! Last night i played for 6 hours..not a single quest and had fun like a maniac!! U need strategy, coordination with other players and sense of challenge ...i mean everything. So far, the best experience in a game i have ever had.!!!
Wanna have fun with no quests and interacting with other players??? Man...you should try PvP in WoW!! Last night i played for 6 hours..not a single quest and had fun like a maniac!!
Now imagine how much fun an MMORPG would be where you could jump right into that instead of having to do several months of boring, linear quests and mindless monster mashing to reach the point (level) at which you are of competetive strength to PvP...
They already have these games, they are called first person shooters. But people don't want to PVP all the time. They like to do different things..
Almost everyone is saying that they love the quests in WOW. You are the only one ripping on them.
Originally posted by WarchildGT I was getting bored of EQ2, which I have seen a lot of lately. So, I decided to install and play WoW finally. After an hour of play, I'm really not that impressed. Nothing "wow'd" me about this game, at least as of yet. When I logged onto City of Heroes for the first time, I was WOW'd. What am I missing about this game that is so great? The character generator is down-right embarrassing and the character models have such a low polygon count, it really loses any feel of immersion for me. The gameplay seemed ok, but was pretty boring. What am I missing? What's so great about this game? I'm not trying to tear down this game, I'm just trying to figure out why so many people love this game. Perhaps it is a generation gap. I am 27 years old. Anyone have a guess as to what the avg age is for this game? Also, I've been playing mmorpgs since the days of Meridian 59 (Yes, that's before UO). I will give it another shot tonight, but man...I don't want to fall asleep at the mouse!
It's a very fun game designed to be simpler and easier to appeal to a broader base of gamers than the typical hardcore MMO player. People love it because they can level relatively quickly and without relying on other people -- thereby feeling that they can get something done in a relatively short period of time as compared to games with steeper levelling and/or more group-oriented game play. It appeals to the casual gamer, to the aging MMO fan who has much less time to play than they used to, to the console gamer with a shorter attention span, to people unfamiliar with (and to thuse who haven'tg in the past liked) MMOs, etc. That's why people love it, in my opinion. And I have to admit it is a very fun game at times, and it is fun to level fast. To me, the game lacks depth and is not cerebral enough for some of my moods (that's where EVE comes in), but for a fairly simple romp, WoW is a polished and fun -- if simple and relatively easy -- MMO.
To orignal poster while I love both games I do have to say you cannot pop game in and play for an hour and expect to find something in thegame that amuses and entertains you, play a little every day or when ya get time and then after a couple weeks(during free trial) then give an opinion.
I think you may just not be high enough lvl or been far enough(explored) in the game to find somethign yet that appeals to you.
I bet all this people here bitching about WoW havent played it yet.
Then you would lose a lot of money.

Virtual Worlds are a tentative affair. they can be either your best Mmorpg experience ever, or leave you so disappinted to not want anything to do with them anymore... and it all depends on players. I suppose that is why EVE fares so well. low population, all of that game fans ensure a low presence of game breakers.
Online Games are entertaining. they give you purpose and a sense of ... accomplishment.. like a CRPG. plus some of them have even interesting end game structures like PvP (DAoC PvP system is still unequalled as much as consensual pvp goes, in my opinion).
