The majority of my knowledge of PvP tend to be in instanced PvE battlegrounds/arenas (and TF2 before it went F2P) and I'd like to try out a MOBA. Which of the above (or suggest others) would be best for a new player that has no friends playing in the genre? I prefer team play rather than going off Rambo style I just don't know anyone that plays either. I'm not sure what other info I could give that would help.

I've played both extensively, and I have no idea what to answer.
How about you try both and see which one you like most? Theyre both free after all (to some extent).
If you want to play with hardcore ppl which will kick the ass out of you if fail a teamfight, then go for HoN.
If you want cute, casual play then go with LoL
I prefere HoN, cuz i come from Dota and i like that ppl take it somewhat serious, even though it can become abit to much sometimes..
Dota 2!
PS. Please don't ever use the term MOBA ever again
"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."
I need to take this advice more.
I'd go with LoL. Both games have a terrible community. LoL is a little less serious and people seem to be a bit more down to earth. Plus it's a bit more strict on the code of conduct; which is needed.
Competitive play always brings out the worst in folks.. especially on the internet.
Thanks all, think I'll try cutting my teeth with LoL- while I do try to ensure I'm a competent player by doing some research on gameplay watching vids I'm not driven enough by competition to be a hardcore.
HoN+LoL= Land of Chaos, not a bad game. It is pretty much a mix of HoN and LoL, but I can't really say...I've never played them, I'm just going by what I've heard. I wish you luck in your endeavors.
What about Bloodline champions ?
Its like DOTA(MOBA whatever) but without creeps and control points.
Just pure PVP
I've made quite a few posts on the differences between LoL and HoN - you can check my post history or the LoL board on this site for one of them. Ciderhelm also made this video about the topic but it's outdated, long, wrong in some spots, and incredibly monotone as usual.
Bottom line, based on 'I prefer team play'? LoL. Only because the game is heavily balanced towards teamfighting. HoN is more balanced around hypercarries and gankers, which will easily make individual skill shine. Other than that, LoL has a lower skill cap and might be easier for you to get into first - and if you become 'pro' enough that the game bores you, you can always switch to HoN.
HoN = Difficult learning curve
LoL = Easy learning curve
I think both games are great. Right now i'm playing LoL but i switch between them a lot. When i get bored of LoL i go back to HoN and vice versa.
It took me about a year to fully learn HoN, that means item builds for all heroes, how to play all heroes, tips and tricks with all heroes, learning how to counter enemy team and certain heroes etc. It took me two weeks to fully learn LoL, only because none of the champions are really difficult to play and item builds are very easy to figure out when you understand your champions spells. I haven't played all LoL champions so maybe i shouldn't say none is really difficult to play but i played about half the champions by now and none of them have been difficult for me. But that's just me, might be different for others.
It would be great if both games could get map editor, then i would be 100% pleased with both games.
The guy above pretty much nailed it...
LoL = easier game + Every hero (almost) can be good all game
HoN = Tons of random garbage that isn't explained and you must learn the hard way. Also, only select heros end up dominating every game always.
LoL has more players I think, was free to play since day one, had a shop (which you can spend cash or in game earnings on) since day one.
HoN added it after a while, and seems a bit, meh to me.
LOL by a mile, There is no MOBA that compares to it atm. They update the game frequently and it looks alot better, the community is 100x better than Hon's and it puts you against people who are new and around your level when u play for the frst time. LOL has a huge playbase too and has 0 P2W items. It might be easier to play for an indiviual but LOL focuses on team play rather than 1v5ing as a carry like in Dota and Hon. LOL is better and there is no doubt about it.
I'd actually recommend DOTA 2 if you can get into the beta for it (or just wait till it releases). Its a good middle ground, its easy to learn ( LoL ), but complex ( HoN ) enough to keep you interested. I've currently got all my friends waiting for invites (I'm the only one who got in lol) but i've been having a blast.
You can spectate games on the fly, they have ranks/ a learning mode / a socialize tab (which hasn't been released yet) / and currently 43 heroes (as of the current patch)
I prefer HON, even it was difficult to learn, after you learn a lot in game im sure you'll enjoy playing it
I prefer LoL. It's easier to get into and figure out, both because it's more intuitive and the community is more helpful. 90-95% of games in HoN someone is going to be a jerk to someone else. In LoL that number is only around 60%.
I never felt like HoN had a higher skill cap, except maybe because of denies. I feel like the stronger emphasis on teamplay in LoL throughout all phases of the game make up for that. I do feel like it's harder to get 'good' at HoN but only because there is more to learn that is necessary to success.
Before you start, learn to accept that MOBA games contain a community that can only be resembled with AIDS. People are selfish, ignorant, rude and most of all complete idiots.
A human being can only withstand this type of players for a limited time untill you feel like smashing your hand through the screen..
Just a heads up before you start
Btw, I found LoL to be more newbie friendly that HoN.
The reason why the community is hateful is because one mistake made by one person can easily cause a loss. It may be all sunshine when you're practically farming the enemy team, but if your carry gets caught out of position and the enemy team aces you, that could be gg. In HoN, you'll be called out far more often than in League since personal skill shines more (the roles of carries and gankers are much more important). In lower levels of play, the enemy team might not be smart enough to capitalize on a mistake you made, but when you get into higher MMR/Elo, you will be punished for every mistake you make - both by the enemy team and your own.
Even if this was the case, it's still no reason for childish namecalling.
However, it doesn't matter if you win or loose, people are still acting like 10 year olds who always get what they want. The games are played by immature people who have no knowledge of the game, but they THINK that they do. They don't care about teamwork, they don't care about roles. All they care about are themselves and their own KD ratio.
