Do you love speaking from a position of ignorance? The hero engine is as solid as any on the market. Decent gaming PCs huh. It cracks me up when people throw that out there like it mans something. People with "decent gaming PCs" aren't the target market.
You just proved my point that the guys in Bioware suck in coding. If the engine is solid their usage of it must be horrible.
Er... Excuse me guys... this thread is NOT actually about Bioware or SW:TOR... if you want to argue about that there is a sub forum.

This thread is about dodgy game reviewers.
thanks
I thought it was about dodgy posters?
That too!
TBH I would rather that than zymurgeist continuing to hijack the thread...
I love the graphics in swtor and threads like this are funny .
You are welcome to like the graphics as they are.
Personally I play most of my MMOs on low rez simply because I either like the game or I don't - the graphics are not that much of an issue to me.
But you miss the point here. It's NOT about SW:TOR - it's about the shonky reviewers.
Look at the Dark zero comments for example:
The final point I’m going to mention is how beautiful the game looks. Whether it was the collision detection on my cape that kept it from randomly entering odd polygons, or the brilliantly rendered landscape, this game is gorgeous. Granted, it nearly blew up my Asus N53 when I set it to the highest graphics, but it was worth it. The game really is breathtaking, and it has graphics that I can see staying relevant for the next five years.
O'rly?
So, he set it to the "highest graphics" and it nearly blew up his graphics card?
Interesting that... especially since even Bioware have admitted that this is not possible.
In all probability that reviewer's dramatized it and/or doesn't know what he's talking about... But, for anyone interested, there is actually a way of getting a good bit more out of the game visually - and pushing even the powerful video cards while you're at it.
First, google the .ini file tweaks and apply them accordingly. Make sure you put in high texture anisotropy, high plant density, shadows and environlighting. Then go to your video card control center and force 8x AA, even have a go at using supersample for it (my system comes to a crawl when I do, so I use multisampling with detect edges). The game looks much better this way, but you might see a serious drop in frame rate. (Though it's been reported some systems actually *gain* framerates when you push these way up - how weird is that?)
The character model textures still look very very bad, though.

No. They just programmed for the majority people who would be playing the game instead of those who prefer upgrading their computer every quarter or so. Sorry my computer doesn't conform to your standards but frankly Scarlet I don't give a dayhum. I don't require my computer throw away three rendered frames to every one it can actually display. Try fitting yours in an overhead bin sometime.
I'm trying hard not to laugh out loud, because I'm at work.
Are you suggesting that by programming a game to run great on high-end PCs will make it run less great on lower-end PCs with reduced settings? Is this perchance your first PC game? Do you know what the graphics settings in the game are for?
Bioware just are either lazy or incompetent. You can try to find any business or w/e reasons you want but that's the truth why they cannot enable the hi-res textures.
I love the graphics in swtor and threads like this are funny .
If you love the low quality armor textures, imagine how the game would look if it implemented actual high textures then.
It wouldn't look very good at 2fps and fifteen minute load times between zones. Good luck finding a video card with 16GB of texture memory so your computer can handle more than ten characters on screen at a time. And low is a relative term.
You do realize most of those reviews were from the weekend betas after they turned the graphics down right?
Shoot, the original Guild Wars, out for over seven years now at least, can have hundreds of characters on screen at the same time in the towns, all on maximum settings, on lower end machines without giving up any detail.

So both of you don't give a shit about the others standpoint, digging yourself into your own positions.
Good job.
Want to meet me half-way by adding a "medium" setting in your positions or will you just remove it like Bioware?
So what's stopping Bioware to adding "Advanced Tab" into theoir graphic options where you could set in-game textures to High-settings (with info that this is not officially supported setting or that it is beta setting ,etc -saw this kind of thing in few games), afaik in early beta where those high textures were in-game there were people that could play them.
If you don't like what Bioware is selling and think they lied...don't buy the game
If you don't like the reviews from major magazines and don't trust them....don't buy them
How anyone is shocked that major magizine and website articles are biased to big game releases is beyond me. This has been going on for YEARS in the gaming industry.
You would think someone would have better things to do with their time than compiling a long post about nearly every game review that had anything to say about the graphics of the game. If it bothers you that much don't play, why would you waste your time? You think you uncovered something new? You didn't, this sort of stuff has been going on from the start.
I am NOT playing SWTOR, not because of the graphics either, I have my own reasons for not playing it. But I am not going to come on a site like this and cry and complain about something when I can just as easily not play it and let those who enjoy it enjoy it.

I think they eventually will, because currently it seems the shitstorm caused by this is bigger than what they will get then the z-guy here cannot run the game at max graphics with his Radeon 1900.
Full of shit or not you seem to have glossed over the part where the vast majority of reviews happened after the highest res texture were taken out weeks before release. All reviews are full of shit by the way. They're just the opinions of strangers.
Thank you for getting back on track.
But so what (about reviews being the opinions of strangers)?
If I want to know what a game is like before I buy it I have to get my info from somewhere.
It would be nice to think that a reviewer would actually do his job and play the game he reviews.
I don't want a reviewer to play a demo or quote developer interviews. If I want to know what the developer thinks I will go to the developer site.

Nothing, nothing at all.
For a AAA title the graphics options and configurability is horrible in SWTOR.
Compare it for example to the hundreds of advanced options in for example Serious Sam 3, thats customizability. Shit i can set the amount of threads or VRAM usage in the options menu. I think its the most elaborate config ever:

Still amazes me that people act shocked over game reviews being less than accurate. Next thing you know people will "discover" politicians lie sometimes!
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...

SS3 is a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER designed for people with high end PCS
SWTOR is a MMO, designed to be so it can have lots of people you know able to play it

You guys do know this is a FORUM, right?
"A medium for open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper, a radio or television program, or a website."
This is a discussion about game reviews.
I know that many reviews are biased. But in most cases reviewers wil brush off anything you say about their reviews by saying "it's a matter of opinion".
Well, in this case, it's not.
It is a FACT that the game (retail client) only offers low rez graphics.
So, I 'named and shamed' the reviewers who seemed to completely miss that fact. Not 'opinion' - but fact.
If you read the original post you will also find I named the ones who noticed (since they are the ones who obviously played the game and reviewed it properly).
Frankly - if nothing else comes of this - I hope they read the OP and are bloody ashamed of themselves. Maybe next time they will do a better job?

Would it help you two if i created a zymurgeist vs tom_gore (get a room) thread for you?
Nothing says irony like spelling ideot wrong.
The graphics remain a clear disappointment for me...along with the lack of any meaningful realm vs realm ..persistent world conflict.
Shoot, the original Guild Wars, out for over seven years now at least, can have hundreds of characters on screen at the same time in the towns, all on maximum settings, on lower end machines without giving up any detail.
Sounds like someone got lazy at Bioware.
Oderint, dum metuant.
I love the game it captures the star wars universe well, not sure what your trying to say, all those reviews I agree with. how are they busted?
So both of you don't give a shit about the others standpoint, digging yourself into your own positions.

Binary choices piss me the fuck off.
Well - as i say in the Original Post - the retail client only offers Low Rez graphics in game - this is info direct from Bioware.
Cheat Code Central said:
The graphics are a definite step up from everything else on the market,...
4.7/5 Graphics
From the cutscenes to the in-game world, no other MMO comes close visually.
So... which game did this guy review?
It certainly wasn't the retail version of SW:TOR.

That reviewer obviously hasn't played too many MMOs...
Here is a novel idea...
If you don't like what Bioware is selling and think they lied...don't buy the game
If you don't like the reviews from major magazines and don't trust them....don't buy them

Its a MMORPG (well not to sure about the MMO bit)
Theres nothing particularly wrong with the graphics.........................................compared to other MMOs
Other than Conan and upcoming games like The Secret World, Planetside 2, Wildstar and Guild Wars2 it looks good
seriously you people think it looks worse than
wow - lol
lotro - nicer environment but crappy animations
rift & war - using an older version of the same engine
SS3 is a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER designed for people with high end PCS
SWTOR is a MMO, designed to be so it can have lots of people you know able to play it
Except that SS3 runs smoother and still looks better on any low-end PC aswell. That's why those graphics options are there.
I guess AION has millions of players worldwide just because it looks like shit, right?
AIOn doesn't look any better than SWTOR

Can I have some of whatever you're smoking?
What i find funny on this thread
lots of people calling out games reviewers saying these aren't crysis like graffics, how dare they give it 8/10 for graffics
when in fact the graffics are good by mmo standards, not the best that would be Conan so far, but good all the same.
BUT
Not one person is calling the reviewers over not noticing the massive great elephant in the room - ITS A GREAT RPG BUT ITS A POOR MMO
I can agree it's a poor MMO, but I wouldn't call it a great RPG. Decent maybe, if they would remove all the nondescript p.o.s. sidequests.
