I'm thinking of getting the years sub but my concern is that the game will go free to play in that t

I have had my fingers burnt before but I'm seriously considering taking up Rifts annual subscription with its free month for 60 pounds . Given Rifts only in its second year I think I'll probably be OK but theres a nagging thought in the back of my mind .... What if this game decideds to go free to play this year sometime and this is a last cash grab.

Is anyone else concerned about this ?

you could have done it right at release, but now? I don't think it's worth a 1-year sub at this point

I wouldn't, I believe if Trion is smart they will put out a b2p or f2p + vanity cash shop sometime soon. They have not announced anything to the matter but they would definately have returning players and new players in hordes if they did.

Everything I say is my opinion or personal preference. You may or may not find it useful to your cause but regardless I am entitled to it.

Regardless of P2W and the crowd wanting it, because they dont# want to pay for everything despite quality...my advice

NEVER do something like that, MMOGs can easily change for the worth in a short period of a time, so if you are smart you only sub for one month and go from there. If you quit you will lose 15 $ thats not much compared to 180 $.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

the game is exactly where trion wanted it at population wise (looking at the ammount of servers they were expecting at the start) so i'd say you would be fine and even not, 60 pounds is what 1-2 games these days?

I don't play Rift, but based on everything I've read Trion sounds like an up and up company.  I'm sure they would give you perks to make up for it during those months.

Right now is there no real danger of that but it might change fast after GW2 releases. It is hard to even guess what that will do to subs but I always felt that GW2 is a bigger threat to Rift that TOR since they are both fantasy games while TOR is Sci-fi.

It will not happen the next 6 months at least so I think you can do it without risking too much money.

At this point in time, i would in no way sub for more than 3 month a time. There is something big coming up and one can very well assume that it'll go into some hybrid-something payment model.

Trion is just about to open more "trial servers" and has indicated that they prepare for a big chunk of players incoming.

If it is just about the discount, i would advise you to check out ebay for these cheap 60 day gametimecards that come at an even better price per month than Trion's official offers. This way you won't be stuck in some longtime sub. Trion's special offers come and go every other weekend, it's not a loss if you skip one.You can still go for 6 month once it is clear what Trion is planing right now.

Seriously...why are you even asking that question here ;P?  You had to know you would get an overwhelmingly negative response from this crowd (unless that's actually what you were looking for)

If you think it's a good value for you, then get it.  NO ONE here as any more of a clue about Trion's viability or lack thereof, than my cat does.

And what is the problem there?

Most F2P games offer a premium account or similar which basically means that the conversion of payment model is touching very little those who were previously subscribed or are life time members.

If you find the game worth money now, it will unlikely change when they hit F2P.

Every game I have seen go f2p have refunded  the yearly sub guys the difference. I am sure if it gets to that point which I seriously, but if it does then Trion will not screw people over.

I don't think Turbine offered refunds to anyone after Lotro's P2P -> freemium switch , if you were subbed you just had remaining time as ViP player so I would watch out tbh.

As for Rift and B2P or freemium. I would say *bullshit* like 2 months ago, but with all this trail servers, well it might be a possibility.

Current mmorpg market especially with crisis in "west" econimies , might not support more than 2-3 P2P themeparks :/

Don't think pure themeparks EQ/ WoW style, bar maybe WoW and Swtor have enough to offer anymore to hold people subscribed for long peroids of time.

After all - most of mmropg playerbase have "been there done that" & "95% of time I am in instaces with few people so it hardly feel diffrent from MOBA's or FPS so why sub?" syndromes.

For mmorpg's to have P2P model they either will need to be spectacular hyped to the skies and backed by huge marketting or offer more mmorpg-like unique experience.  Current mmropg's including Rift offer game experience that is too similar to single player and normal non-massive multiplayer games. That's their problem.

Rift is just missing the IP. They also took a odd approach to alts and world size. Right now if you look at half the crying on the different forums they bring up Rift amost 99% of the time. When it comes to devs where you feel like your sub money is actually going towards that mmorpg only Trion qualifies.

What does your cat think then?? Will Trion go F2P?

As for the orginal question. Do what you want and be damned for it. If Trion has reduced long term sub rates still then go for it, if you want ;) But to give a more intelligent answer. When games go F2P then active subs always get some sort of bonus. So really your not going to lose.

I cant think of any MMO  that hasnt merged servers at some point. The initial launch of a game always brings in more people than will stay long term for whatever reason. As for it going F2P, I think thats possilbe but not likely for awhile and if it does, its likely to be a "freemium" set up where its actually cheaper for new players to go ahead and sub. So, I dont think buying a multi month sub should be avoided if you plan on staying for that length of time and once the time is up you can always go F2P if you like.

Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

I really don't think anyone is being too negative.  Just stating their beliefs.

With the odd switch of some servers to trial servers...server mergers?  What ever it was...Trion is gearing up for something.  Whether it be a f2p launch or the better hybrid model, we have no clue.  It's probably best to pay monthly, but as was stated, I don't think Trion would still be offering the year sub if they just intended to switch over to just f2p.  They don't seem to be the type of company that's in it for the "cash grab" approach, like Cryptic.  If they do, I'm sure you would be compensated in some way.

No way this game goes F2P.  It still has 40+ serevrs.  At its height EQ2 had 16 serverrs.  The game is doing very well.  The population has stabilized and people are coming back from ToR.  It is one of only 3 supported raiding games on the market.  The raiding is very good and raiding playerbase is very loyal.  Rift is essentially the successor to EQ2.  Like Eq2 I would expect that with time it will grow.  Recall EQ2 shrunk to 100k subs after a year but with continued content grew to over 200k.  Rift has the same forumula of kicking out new content.  They just do it better.  There are really no other games on the horizon for veteran MMO players but Rift.

The year sub price is great.  I changed my 6 month sub to the year sub.  There bis no better vaulue in any MMO.  Rift is doing amazingly well at retaining subs and it will be here quite a long time.  If the game was doing poorly Trion would not be hiring so many people and investing so much money into new content.  They are continuing to pump money to make Rift a long term game.  I really love Trion.  They are the best thing to happen to the MMO egnere inq uite a long time.

Can't see it going FTP in the next year or so, we will progressively see the Content Patches get slower before that happens. And even so, you would sure as hell get your money out of it, and a subscriber gets added Bonus like others that have changed to buy stuff with "credit" or whatever they call it.

it seems they are positioning themselfs now for some sort of hybrid, clearing out 11 servers for what "trials" who the hell needs eleven trial servers unless they are expecting a massive influx of new players, and how might they achieve that?

My guess is once you sub you can hop over to the sub servers or just play on the trial servers for free buying the content you want etc, some sort of cash shop shop model that they think wont piss of the existing sub base.

^^^ Very doubtful Rift is going free. Sub base is increasing daily. As there is no game out there that is even close to the fun and enjoyment you can find and have in Rift. I am thinking about a year sub as well.
