Its very easy to be a critic we all do it but its a lot harder to come up with an idea . So I wonder what mmorpg.com members can come up with . How would you put innovation back into them ?
How do we do away with the standard style quests . ie kill this, find that , escort it etc ?
Should they do away with leveling ? If so what should they replace it with ?
Permadeath . How could it be done in a way the was popular and feasable ?
How would you changed instanced pvp ?
How would you change or replace raiding ?
MMOs have been building on ideas such as these since the very earliest ones that predate World of Warcraft by several years .I guess you could call it gaming evolution .But as in the real evolution it could have a sudden and fast jump forward and something totally new could come along but it will be difficult for any developer to do .
Maybe there should entirely new concept that gets away from the third person or overheard view ?
Or perhaps you can think of something thats been used in single player rpgs that could realistically fit into an mmo ?
Maybe player generated content is the answer ?

Unless you are a game designer working on a game that is actually going to be published what you think doesn't matter.
This has always been clear. And if you don't have ideas with mass market appeal, even if you are the lead designer, the suits will shit on you and make you change it.
It's difficult to point out specific characteristics, only the final product would make clear if they work or not, but I think the first innovative MMO would be one that is not a permutation of known features, and instead starts from something else as a core.
Money talks.
Player generated content is a good bet.
What made Youtube popular? Because they had a huge staff looking for thousands of videos to put in the page?
No, they just created a platform for people to put their own stuff and then that sky-rocketed.
So, I think it's theorically possible to have an MMO where developers create a system that encourages player interaction and feeds from player generated content, but also makes possible the good content (the good experiences) to stand out from the crowd. (If someone asks, no, that's not the sandbox games of our times).
