Any RvR focused games on the horizon?

KoujoKoujo Member Posts: 18

I'm so sick of all the WoW clones and shallow theme park games the industry keeps throwing at us that I'm about to write off MMOs forever. So many missed oportunities with the latest releases for a quality RvR game it makes me want to scream. How many Orc vs Elf PVE grindfest raiding games do we need? And yet the onlly decent RvR game to ever be created (DAOC) is all we have to chose from? Don't get me wrong, I loved DAOC, but the game is past its prime and was not without its problems.

So what's left? Dominicus (SP?) sounds intresting but I'm not optimistic about a small developer like that creating a truely polished and complete MMO. Battlestar Galactica Online is actually the closest thing to RvR that I've found in the years since leaving DAOC but honestly it's gameplay is a bit shallow and the combat mechanics are a tad uniteresting.

DCUO could have been awesome with just a little incentive added to world PvP. Same goes for SWTOR. Is there anything out there?!?!

I wouldn't say the game is RvR focused but Guild Wars 2's WvWvW seems to be inspired from DAoC's RvR. You can read about it here and sure there will be quite a few similarities, I doubt there will be unlockable content (like a dungeon), to those that hold a certain location. If you're interested, there is this section of a dev Q & A session that was held recently.

    things are looking up

    RVR focused planetside 2, dominus

    has RVR TSW, firefall

has something 90% like RVR GW2*

*by this it's 3 servers matched/ranked rather than 3 factions, and it's a fortnight long tournament not fully persistent, this will have positives for balance, but negatives for community - imo)

Yeah Defiantly look at playing Guild Wars 2 if you enjoyed RvR.

Daoc RvR will always be king.  BUT. WvW in gw2 is very similar. It will feature a persistent "frontier land" zone called the mists with keeps and towers that you can capture and claim as a guild. And plenty of large scale combat between zergs and grps (emain baby).

In an Interview this just up, several questions are asked about Guild Wars 2's WvWvW. Here are some of the notable ones. It really does sound like a lot of fun, but here's waiting to actually have a chance to beta it this Spring...

GWI: I’m not too sure how much you can say about WvWvW, but what can you tell us a little about Keeps?

Mike: The keeps are a much larger space in comparison to the Kylo PvP map, and they all have unique terrain features. One keep climbs up the side of a mountain while another is based around a lake; so you have some underwater entrances you’ll need to defend.

We have towers, which are basically like smaller versions of keeps. They’ll have a couple of walls and a door you can bash in so you can try and take over.

We’ll have resource camps, which are more of an “open field” style of battle. They’ll have a capture point in them so you can fight for control of the resources.

GWI: So what is the point of keeps in WvWvW? I know you can build them, but what purpose do they serve.

Mike: The goal is, over a two week period, to get the high score and for your server to win. They play a tactical role in organizing groups and earning points for your side. You can form a group and try to take over a keep, or starve them out by taking over all the resources. We have a lot of different tactical stuff like that in WvWvW.

GWI: Will competitive PvP players, or those who generally enjoy playing solo and not in big groups be able to find a home in WvWvW? What will it be like?

Jonathan: It really depends on what kind of player you are. Sometimes you can just be playing it, minding your own business, “Oh hey, I want to take out this supply cart…” and then here comes 30 people and you’re like “Ok, I’m screwed.” But it’s can be really cool and exciting. PvP’ers are really good at coordinating teams, scouting parties, and getting information back to the main hub. Then from there the hub can command who needs to go where, the allocation of player resources, you know.. how many people need to go here to defend, how many do we need over there.

Matt: I think that’s the great thing about WvWvW. If you just a solo player there’s a lot of things you can do, and once you get more players the world just opens up to a lot of different options. I find that the more players you have, the more you’ll want to send smaller groups out. You’ll want to send a small group out to deal with this objective over here in the corner, while the bigger force attacks the giant castle.

Mike: It’s a lot more of an organic play style, because it’s not structured in 10 or 15 minute matches like our competitive PvP is. You can go in at any level and you’re using your PVE character to just go out and play in WvWvW. So it’s a different mindset with a lot of different play styles.

GWI:  In maps like Kylo, the environment plays a big part of it. Anything else from a WvW standpoint where you can just knock something down, take out a bridge even?

Mike:  All the keeps and towers, we talked about, have walls that can get treb’ed down or you can break those down. You’re bashing through doors all the time. We’ll try to add more of that stuff but we definitely want to have the environment play a big part.

Matt:  We’ve seen it a lot too.  In closed beta there’s been countless times where keeps are getting attacked and you roll up on this keep that you anticipate that’s going to be this awesome epic defense, but your just a little too late.  Now you have your keep’s gate down, you pushed them back, but then they get on the Trebuchets. Now there’s holes in every wall and they are just pouring in in.

It gets to the point where you slowly go “Ok, what are we really defending here?”  At this point its completely destroyed.  So, things can break down fast and change the course of action.

TSW take on RVR - skip to about 8:45 in this video for pretty good demo and description of the system (earlier bits describe the factions and the battleground type pvp)

note: 4 of these objectives per zone

    multiple zones not just 1

    they are fully persistent

    "relic" like society buffs
