Regardless of the game's future, the debate of whether the game was profitable for Trion is without question now.
I don't play Rift anymore, but major props to Trion Worlds. One of the best gaming companies I've run into in my own personal experience. Hope these guys retain their fantastic attitude and stellar customer service as they undoubtedly rise as a gaming powerhouse.

Seems like you aren't the only one that agrees.....

So by my take... TRION Worlds has raised $185 million in investments the last 3 years.... damn!
These new games better be good!
We posted this news a long time before Massively! MMORPG.com is the only place for MMO news...at least that's what they tell me when I start my day at 5:30 a.m. everyday.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5-30am..thats a crime in itself..hope they pay you well.
There is actually nothing to indicate that Rift has made a profit yet. Development costs + cost of new servers + cost of running servers + cost of developing the game past release.
Revenue does not = profit.
Not that 100 million isnt a good number and m sure they are thrilled, but thats gross revenue not net revenue and there is a collosal difference between the two.
LOL point taken. Good article btw SBFord:)
You bring up a valid point, but they made a significant profit on Rift. How do I know this?
They had raised over 100 million in investment capital up to Rift's launch.
They reportedly spent over 50 million before launch.
They have one game launched and 2 others currently planned.
Do you really think the cost and maintaining Rift is 100 million?
On top of all this they raised another 80 million + from new investors.
You don't get new investors without having your finances in the black. That's just a fact. If they loss money, they would be talking about securing loans and selling the company (if it was a significant loss.)
Revenue does not = profit. You're right.
Obtaining new investment, talks of going publicly traded and being featured in two prominent financial sites certainly does give solid factual evidence that they made a substantial profit. It's up to you if you believe that evidence as solid enough.
After seeing their "success" with Rift I'm excited to see what else Trion is going to have down the line. In my books Trion is put right up there in the "buy first ask questions later" category... not a large category really, Blizzard is really the only one that is coming to mind :P Although after Fallout3 Oblivion and Skyrim Bestheda is probably close.
