Should i get a SSD?

timmy12timmy12 Member UncommonPosts: 390

Alright so im figureing out that i think my Hard Drive is kinda crappy, my friends have lesser specs then mine and they can load games much faster then me and its really annoying and im thinking its my HD. Im not even sure what my specs are on the Hard drive but im assume its worse then my friends, its for sure a 7200 rpm model.

So should i buy a SSD to get better performance in games? I want a cheap one around 120gb so i can put a couple big games on it. BF3, WoW, Lineage 2, and Steam

specs

i5 2500k

560 ti

p8p67 pro

4 gb of ram

1tb hd

Hell yeah! get 2 and put your OS on one and games and media on the others.

OS alone for me got a 30% boost

SSD is not a miracle solution to loading times which are still dependent on how efficiently the game engine itself can load game assets and other factors on the software side. Although, sure, if you can spare the money it's always a better alternative compared to standard mechanical drives.

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

well my friends play the same games and there specs arent as good as mine but they load like WoW loading screens 1 min faster then mine

If you want faster loading times, then yes, you should definitely get an SSD.

If you want a cheaper, older model, you could try this:

If you're willing to take a chance on a new controller and risk firmware problems, you could try this:

If you're willing to pay a little more to get something demonstrably high end, then either of these will fit:

I've been very satisfied with these SSD's

You should also double your RAM to have at least 8GB.

Good to have your OS run on it but for games its a waste of money.

Wrong.  SSD's are great for loading across nodes in games and for loading textures from far distances.

    Yes, Buy the SSD.

Deffo buy an SSD, I put my OS + Swtor on it and the improvement is huge!

    Yes, Buy the SSD.

If you have problems with that without an SSD youre doing it wrong.

Again, waste of money unless its for your OS.

Your hard drive is between the Western Digital VelociRaptor and the Seagate Momentus, way down at the bottom.  The Mushkin Callisto that I linked as a cheaper option is basically equivalent to the Corsair Force in those graphs.  The high end options I linked are faster yet.

Loading times are highly dependent on storage, and an SSD is the only way to get fast storage.

You will instantly see an improvement to the OS, it makes everything so so smooth. Even if that was just the bonus it gave you it wouldbe enough.

But it does help with loading on games, Some more than others.

Rift zone times went from 12-15 odd sec to instant - literally the 1% pops up then im in.. :)

I would say with Steam - put in on your HDD, you can use a bit of software to "move" individual the games to another drive and have them work normally through steam still. Think its called Steamtool.

Core i5 13600KF,  BeQuiet Pure Loop FX 360, 32gb DDR5-6000 XPG, WD SN850 NVMe ,PNY 3090 XLR8, Asus Prime Z790-A, Lian-Li O11 PCMR case (limited ed 1045/2000), 32" LG Ultragear 4k Monitor, Logitech G560 LightSync Sound, Razer Deathadder V2 and Razer Blackwidow V3 Keyboard

Hard drives are the largest bottleneck in gaming. If you have enough RAM and VRAM you can cache a large portion of the textures into memory, but it still needs to come off the HDD initially.  Having an SSD to hold your game files is an improvement no matter what. Having an SSD hold your OS is great, but you should turn off your prefetch and paging file from an SSD because it will burn out an SSD faster. So that means you really need to have a substantial amount of RAM available which you do not, or you need to keep a standard HDD for housing your paging file thus slowing the performance benefit from having an SSD for your OS.

There's advantages to SSDs such as shorter load times, and I hear they work as a great boot drive.

Id like to get one myself one of these days.  Keep in mind however its projected that SSDs will drop steadily in price over the next year and years to come.  Mid way through 2012 Ive read they're predicted to drop in price to about $1 a gig.  Which is still very expensive compared to HDDs.

But Im holding out until they are more affordable.  One of these days I'll be throwing out my HDD and replacing it completely with a large SSD.  But that day is awhile away.

The way I look at it, if you can stand to wait, do it.  They are going to be dropping steadily in price over the next few years.

Furthermore, HDDs currently offer far more space for a fraction of the price.  If I were to replace my hard drive, Id get an HDD right now.  Of course if you have the money to burn, by all means get an SSD if that makes you happy.   But for now, as far as Im concerned, the value of an SSD does not amount to the value of a HDD.

ive done a lot of testing with games on ssd vs. hd. some games improve dramaticly, others dont

rift, wow, age of conan saw negligible or no improvements

aion, forsaken world, swtor, eq2, black prophecy saw great improvements

its very dependant how the game caches, load screens are a secondary to this.

I think people should be asking "Why shouldn't I get an SSD" --

Really the only reasons I can think of:
I want to use the drive for FRAPS recordings.
I only have room for 1 drive and I need a lot of storage space too.
I don't understand computers well enough to be able to use two separate hard drives.
I can't possibly fit a useable sized SSD in my budget.

Aside from that, the dual SSD boot drive/ traditional hard drive combo is hard to beat, even if the price per byte is high on SSD's, the performance per dollar way outstrips that number.

especially now. with the flooding ruining the hd market its pretty much made ssds the logical choice
