I love how the announcement was just ambiguous enough to be agonizingly frustrating. He doesn't specify whether or not the march and april betas will be open, closed, or a transition from one to the other. As such, the game could be releasing right after these mysterious "aggressively ramped up beta events" or even more aggressively ramped up beta events could follow, followed by an open beta, followed by an eventual release next fall.
I agree that it sounds like it will be sooner, but the language of this particular announcement does not definitively indicate one way or another.

Play other games you do enjoy. It sounds like you just will not enjoy SWTOR, so why force yourself? I bet if you go play some old games you have not played in awhile time will pass by quickly. I've been engrossed in battlezone 2 for awhile. The game had depth.
Gah you all know this means we'll be waiting till like June for the game.
Or, knowing MMO luck and voodoo, more like November/December.
I think May or June are pretty realistic.
But really, even though I want to play this game badly, I wouldn't mind waiting a few months if the game needs more time. Games are judged at release after all.

I think the language left this loophole just in case something unforseen occurs between now and then. Based on the impression they have given about Open Beta in the past, I think that the March and April Beta Events are intended to be Open Beta.
(They have said that Open Beta will be open, as in people can talk about it, but it probably won't mean that everyone who wants in will get in. Eric Flannum has also said a number of times that they don't want to open the game to fans until the game is release worthy and that any Open Beta events would likely be short, in order to save the full on game experience for launch. This fits perfectly with the announcement of greatly expanded access to testing with events in March and April).
I think this makes it more clear. March and April events are what Arenanet had been calling Open Beta, but they are being careful with the terminology now, because they don't want to imply everyone will be able to get in, or that access will be unlimited:
"We purposely didn’t use the term “Open Beta”, we mentioned Beta Events. To some people Open Beta means unlimited access to the game and everybody on the interwebs can play it. This is not what we will do.
We will do Beta Weekend Events. Those of you who played Guild Wars might already be familiar with the concept. It means that many of you (like the blogpost says) will get a chance to participate in specific Events, but access won’t be unlimited – there will be some kind of selection criteria and the beta period will usually start on a Friday and end on the following Sunday".
That tells me that if no issues arise, the game is very likely to launch in April or May, depending on the dates for beta events in April and the lead time between the end of beta and launch.
Now, I'm really waiting for details on pre-order bonuses, collector's editions and Early Access, if they decide to go that route.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it."-Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
I'm glad they placed a loophole in that statement. I'd rather the game be delayed for refinement than have ArenaNet jump the gun (either by their own volition or by pressure from a publisher) and release a broken game.

The Deep Web is sca-ry.
Edited your typo for you.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.
We should all be so used to waiting for games year after year that it wouldn't matter whether they launched December 31st, unless the Mayans object.
GW2 will be released at 21/12/2012.
nope.

Just emailed the admin to see if it'd be feasable for me to do something like that. If it is, I am.
I really hope the weekends aren't under NDA, I'd like to do some streaming and commentary /fingerscrossed
A very big year indeed.
