The latest edition of the Final Fantasy XIV producer's letter has arrived with news of New Year's revelry by the dev team. The team took time to head out to offer prayers for a successful year for FFXIV as it rocks its way to v2.0.
Well, work started back up on January 4th, and you know what that means—the planner gang all headed out together to Sens?ji in Asakusa (the same place as last year) to get our hatsum?de on. That’s the tradition of going to offer the first prayers of the new year here in Japan, btw.

Always kept this game on radar as the game looks amazing in graphical terms.
But the 2.0 release? They need to get it out the door by March, else they are screwed*
* See GW2 and The Secret World for details.
**** SOPA!
Sorry! It just reminds me of the Razer Mouse pic!
It will take more than some well-wishing for the new year to fix the lost trust.
"I consider the game 50% finished now and on a good note we are making a completely new client and will change the game drastically. Oh and while you are waiting for the new game we want you to pay for the half finished client from now on."
I had often been accused of being a fanboy but this kind of impudence was plain too much.
I don t agree with th above poster that it needs to come out in March. Let the actually people who are now in control and give a crap about the product finish it. It s the only game on the horizon, if they can pull off what they re saying that can pull me away from any game out there. If it s remotely close to the feel I got in FFXI, then ya i ll play this solely, and not look back.
The truth is they promise a typical mmo with 2.0. Just with final fantasy feel. Sure it will do well in Japan but I doubt ppl in the west want another everquest like mmo.
Well count me as one of the people who want an EQ/FFXI mmo here in the west and one less SWTOR/WOW mmo (the first FFXIV iteration and SWTOR were both piles of garbage). That being said I am unsubscribed from TOR and have now gone back to see the changes in FFXIV and I'm having more fun here ^^
How this is impudent in any shape or form escapes me.
If people like the game so much that they want to pay to play it, they can. Many people seem to. It has nothing to do with the waiting game- you don't exactly have to play the game to wait for 2.0 to arrive. That's just stupid.
SE is not obliged to keep the service live. Assuming that they are- now that's impudent.
You know what? I don't agree that the game should come out before other games. That's because unreleased MMO is the best MMO. Let the time pass and competitors release their games, then pick up what's left.
Once GW2 is out (lolTSW) SE has a completely open field to wreak havoc before Titan arrives sometimes in 2015...
And to the one poster above, believe it or not, there are people out there who are not the least bit excited for guild wars 2. I am one lol
Trying to compare FFXI to SWTOR is like comparing a 10 speed bike to a Ferrari.
Either way both crash and burn like the Hindenburg. Except there's no Phoenix for TOR as long as EA is around.
What should I say? I'm a jerk for believing that buying a box for 50€ to play an online game also means that the game will stay online.
I'm also naive enough to believe that when the main dev himself says the game is only 50% finish that they will not charge me to play a beta version. But yeah the mighty Square Enix Empire is now using the same tactics and excuses as tiny fail companies such as Star Vault.
Way to go.
Well...
If you are enjoying the game in its current state, why complain about paying a subscription? If you aren't enjoying the game, simply don't sub and don't play. Its really that simple.
So let me sum things up:
1) You believe that companies should keep an MMO service live indefinitely until every single person who has bought a copy has quit playing, for free to boot.
2) When a main dev says that a game is 50% complete in August, the game is also 50% complete in January the next year after massive patches have hit the servers. Also when the same main dev clarifies that after said massive patch the game is where he wants it to be, this comment is ignored in favor of the mindset that the game will be 50% complete until 2.0.
3) The game's beta ended in September 2010 but you are still somehow assuming that the game is in a state of Beta. Every MMO is "incomplete", you can ask this from any dev. They are never ready, but surprisingly, they are not in a state of beta either.
So, no, you are not a jerk, nor naive. Just delusional.
One more thing- if the customers think that the game is worth paying for then nothing else matters. Most customers from the free period agree. No one is forced to be there.
If I recall right the 50% statement was made end of September since I didn't log into the game anymore since early October.
So .. October, November, December - that makes 3 months. Unless you want to count the 6 days of January as a full month as well?
I plain overlooked how godly the devs are that the game had been online for a year and was at a 50% finished stage but then they finished it all within a mere 3 months. I bet it's so good now that we don't even need a version 2.0 anymore right?
Having said that I take it as a great compliment to be called delusional by a fanboy.
Second.
That statement came a bit before 1.19 was released, which overhauled quite a few things. After that 1.20 was released, which also added features that Yoshida felt were crucial for the game to be considered 'finished' (though, as I said, MMO's are never finished).
Before that statement only one major patch had been released on the same year, so it is not so much them being Godly in the past 3 months but them taking so long to release a proper patch in the early '11.
It's so good now that most people who stuck with the game pre-fees are still playing post-fees.
Either way the fact of the matter is that any company can close their MMO anytime they want, make it F2P or P2P anytime they want, and rehaul their MMO anytime they want. Maybe I am an MMO fanboy for stating such general facts that apply to any MMO existence?
I played the game during Beta, and in my opinion it was terrible.
I gave it a 2nd chance this past December before it went P2P. It was slightly less unstable, but otherwise nothing seemed to change.
Final Fantasy XI was one of my all-time favorite MMOs. Final Fantasy XIV is one of the all-time worst to me.
The fact that they had to make the game F2P just to keep players playing over the last year means the game definitely has problems. If this game had been released by a company with less money to burn than SE, it would most definitely have failed. You may genuinely enjoy it, and thats all well and good, but that by no means indicates the game is in good health.
First thing sounds completely made up. I only knew about 50 people in the game and all of them except for 3 left.
I'm sure that doesn't give an impression of how other communities that I didn't get to know handled the situation I guess?
And what I highlighted as blue makes it sound like "Be glad for everything and be glad they didn't just take the game offline when it wasn't the big success they wanted it to be."
And that - is fanboy mentality.
We are talking sub numbers here, and consecutive logins stayed mostly the same pre- and post-sub fee.
I don't care what you twist it into sounding like. It says exactly how it is. You don't have to be glad about it- yet there is no reason to be upset either. Server upkeep costs money and SE wants to get even as long as people are willing to pay- there is nothing unreasonable about this, especially after 15 months of free service to make up for the initial blunder. Another way to get even is to close the servers. Either way nowhere does it state that SE has to keep losing money just because you want to play. And even then they did lose money just so you could play.
The game isn't in good health. But the people who do play it are willing to pay for it. What the general consensus is does not matter when it comes down to the individual's preference, and those people genuinely find the game enjoyable. Although small in numbers, clearly there are enough of them to keep the service up and running.
But you can be sure that it's a very small minority that thinks this way.
Not necessarily. The game hasnt even been P2P for a full month yet. Besides, it survived a year with NO ONE paying for it. Square Enix' coffers run deep. They could very likely afford to keep it F2P for another year, maybe two. Obviously they'd rather try to get some money for the game instead of doing that.
I'm sure the promise of 2.0 is whats keeping a lot of people playing. I'll admit I plan to give it a 3rd try after 2.0, but if that doesn't live up to the promise, thats it for me. You can bet I'm not the only one that feels that way.
Can really only wait and see.
As far as I know there are 200 people working on this game to get it up to top notch. This alone tells me how serious they are and if they dont pull through, they are going to lose more than just fan base..I do hope all goes well..To anyone who still plays; I am in Besaid as Gap Paw lets hook up..
I retired retroactively..Haha
i had never played ffxiv before but after seeing the goobbue mount video i was like OMFG I WANT THAT
so i bought it, only 20 bucks with free first month, and the ui is ass backwards but reminds me of like ff2 ui haha
once i learned how to use it and got passed the initial wtf feeling th game itself is really fun.
its more slow paced then say rift or other mmos but its nice to not have to be rush rush rush rush!
and i actually die if i try to fight something more then 2 levels higher then me
the game reminds me of a graphicly updated asian version of everquest 1. i like it a lot and uninstalled swtor to play this.
