Also I find most of the spells lookin very similar, we basically are getting blue/yellow/violet/green etc flames..I think the spells should look more distinctive
This is probably the only worry I have with GW2
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
Apart from the Asura and no multiclassing, this is my largest problem with the game. Overdone spell effects. Somehow they didn't feel that bad in GW 1, even though there I disliked the flashy swords on warriors etc. too.
EDIT: Beautiful spell effects can be far more subtle, even elemental ones. But having warriors with swirling anime swords flashing around is against everything what I stand for.
Ye i think they said it themselves they'll tone it down, i don't know if they already made some work on this. Imo its not a problem solo, but in groups its a bit too much imo. But generally i prefer just subtle lines and effects anyway. The vid the OP linked i great i think, it was lot more messy in some of the dungeon vids i saw few month ago.
The entire point is that you will be able to play by watching what's going on in the environment, with out needing to stare at your hotbar and a bunch of icons and casting bar feedback. Minimizing the need to monitor the UI and maximizing the information you gain through direct observation are a huge step forward for the genre and yes, this is innovative.
Plus, many of us like the aesthetics, thank you very much!
I think you are missing an important part of what Anet is trying to do. They want you to be able to tell what skill others are using. Having subtle hard to notice attacks would make it incredibly difficult to know when to apply a cross profession combo.
Exactly this, how else can you know what skills to interupt and which are harmless.
FFXI did this years ago, nothing to see here move along.

The hue of the spell effects are what distincts the spells from friendly from enemies'. If you look at PvP videos, the spell effects have a red or blue hue to distinct the user.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
Even in EQ there was an option to tone down particle effects if you so desired. I'm sure GW2 will have that option.
This ^^
Why not? I personaly like the huge flashy effects, not only to see what is going on, but because I like the feel of leveling my opponent in a blaze of death a destruction. Of course, sometimes I also like to see exactly what is killing my opponent, just to store it for later use, reading number has never been my taste to tell the truth, which makes me happy that GW2 is actually making it possible for me to watch the screen and know what is going on instead of watching health bars to see what is, whoes getting killed and where the action is. I can see it happening.

Agree, I like to see what is happening instead of being told by a wall of text
What I also like to see ANet doing is that, using graphical elements to show health percentage, instead of a health bar above character's head. Maybe damage armor or dd

I played that game for over a year and never had any issues even in largescale PvP. GW2 is positively bland in the 'effects' department compared to games like that, and they are fairly commonplace anymore. Even some spell effects in EQ2 fill the entire screen with effects and explosions, especially the champion spells. I don't think I'd like GW2 to tone down its effects anymore than they are. I think they're just the right amount of flash and substance.
We all know swinging a sword in real life doesn't create ripples in the air of flashes of power. We also life is a hell of a lot more boring. If you want no-frills combat, it's probably not the game for you. I wish I could point you in a different direction but every game I can think of involves flashy effects. Arch Age is probably the most toned down, and that's not saying much considering some of the spells summon aoe fireballs and giant hands that crush you.

We?re all dead, just say it.

Hopefully they tone it down, because too much "flash" in combat gets annoying.

I guess this boils down to opinion, but nothing in that video seemed to be 'too much.' When you said "too many fireworks" this is what came to mind:

This is how it all starts! Something like this will be the game breaker!
Great demo though!
