I played beta and month 1.  I loved the game.  None of my characters got over level 30.  I don't remember clearly but I'm fairly sure it was a combination of Alt-itis/info overload.  So I backed off the game.  I moved on to other pastures.

I'm eyeballing the year sub now as well as the recent patches (and 1.7) and debating whether or not it's worth it.  I had expected ToR to occupy the space up to GW2 but now that's not really happening.

Alittle background..

I've played MUDs, UO, and then bought EQ at launch. Played EQ up through Velious (expansion 3?).  I moved on to DAOC around the time.  I've played darned near every MMO since.  I don't really PvP but have been doing warfronts more lately and cutting my teeth on the PvP side.  (still have horrible memories of being ganked by someone in UO opening a chest and being poisoned)

One thing I never got into was Raiding.  I don't have a schedule that allows it.  I don't mind sitting down for a 2 hr dungeon run but I can't gurantee that I'll be home on any given night with my job (in fact, some days I sit at home all day and play).

I have a guild that used to have a population on the game, not sure it's really active but I'm interested.

I missed the free play weekend last weekend due to work so I only got on long enough to go through the Guardian starter again.

I've budgetted a game on this paycheck and I'm debating using tha for gametime on this game.  Let me know your opinions (good and bad).  I'm just ultimately trying to sway one way or the other.

What specific activities are you looking for in a MMO? If you're interested in PvE or PvP gear grinds then Rift endgame is for you. The leveling game is the same as it was back when you played it- It's a quest grinder (the fastest leveling I've experienced in any MMO- you cannot possibly slow it down) and some of the chains are interesting, the graphics are good imo (although the aesthetics... vary), and Trion is excellent at putting out content quickly, even if that content tends to be more raids (which you may or may not have time for), new daily quests, and palette-swapped rifts/invasions.

  • well, i'm not gonna try and sell Rift to you as much as i enjoy it, but rather just kind of help clear up some things. to me Rift is a great game, but that's my opinion. there are a ton of things for raiders, and non raidiers. going alt happy in this game isn't something that works if you're focus is raiding, but you said that's somewhat an issue for you so you're safe there. i've been playing hardcore since launch and only have my mage at 50. there's just too much goin on to keep up with anymore then one toon imho, but i love to raid.

i don't know if i could tell someone to sub for a year for a game if they aren't sure they'd get that much out of it. you may get in game and love it or hate it, idk. 100 bucks is a chunk of change to spend on a game, but that's just me. not sayin don't jump on board with the year sub, but may want to consider a 1 or 3 months sub just incase you didn't like the game. a lot of people think this game is the greatest thing since sliced bread though.

with all the cations aside, Rift is worth MY money every month np at all. i really fell bad my sub is as cheap as it is most of the time. Trion puts out amazing content at a fast rate. they take care of any issues as they happen (in game or out of game). it's a themepark, but has enough extras to keep me going.

if you do pick it up again i'd recomend transfering to a shard with a nice population. transfers are free. also make sure your shard has the pop you need at your play times. this way you can PUG most of the 10/20 mans if you had the time to do so. there are PUGs all day in most of the high pop servers now. if you're curious about what you've missed this link can catch you up: LINK

be aware that 1.7 notes are on the test shard and should be coming out really soon. 1.7 is revamping the PvP system that's been in use and should be a nice improvement for new players and to the game in general. it's also adding in some recomended specs for leveling to help with the soul system overload for newer players. bunch of other goodies in 1.7 as well.

hope this helped a bit and good luck in whatever game you find yourself playing :)

Thank you both for the response.

I'm looking mostly for something to keep my attention.

I don't mind grinding but I enjoy the journey as much as I do getting to the end.  I tend to craft alot in games.

If they would go back to a crafting only game, I think I'd be there.  (for example, lately I've been all over Terraria, Minecraft, and JunkJack (iOS) )

Things that aren't fun:  having to have specific armor/setups in order to play a game, grinding for the sake of grinding, grinding gold.

I also don't mind just getting lost in the wood and walk around.  Sometimes the most interesting easter eggs are in the most out of the way places.

And while I admit 100 bucks is quite a bit, I'd already be in the hole $60 for a console game.  Thinking back on the money I've spent on MMO's in the past, I have a HARD time getting past the 13months for 100 bucks.  That works into something like 7 bucks a month.

13 months for only $100 sounds like a dream deal to me but the thing is that 2012 will have some great releases: GW2, FFXIV 2.0, ArchAge maybe, and I would not like the idea to be tide up to a game while playing for a 2nd game that just releases, done it before and didn't like it cause once I play one game I never find time for a 2nd.

Here's what I recommend. Start playing again once 1.7 is released, which is very soon. I know it sounds awkward, but with the way they helped out new players to understand the game by adding the new premade specs and stuff it really feels like a different game. I started leveling a Cleric on the PTS and everythign was smooth... there was no frustration on how to spec and no time lost trying to look up information on the class. I just created my character and picked my path based on how I wanted to play and off I went. I didn't want to stop leveling, but it was the PTS so whatever I gained was pointless.

If you've never experienced the game a lvl 50 then you're missing out on a lot of stuff. so my recommendation to you is start playing when 1.7 launches and give it a month. Level to 50 and experience everything the game has to offer. You won't be disappointed.

GW2 is the only thing on the horizon I'm eyeballing for launch.  Everything else has been moved to about 3-6 months post launch.
