Background: It's safe to say that I've pretty much played every semi-popular MMO I can think of. The most fun I had was playing EQ, leading into Shadowbane, leading into Star Wars Galaxies (pre-CU), which then lead to WoW and a plethora of other random MMOs on and off for years.
I've tried to keep up and search around for some of the good oldies, but I'm having a hard time re-integrating. It's safe to say that playing a Massively Multiplayer game by myself is not appealing anymore in the least. So I guess what I'm asking is: what MMO out at the moment fosters community and building these friendships? I'm partial to the sandboxes, but I've played enough of most of them. I'm don't mind a good theme park, but I prefer more of an open world.
Can go with either F2P or P2P, but my computer specs aren't too crazy (intel duo core + geforce 9600 gs), but I can play most games. Any recommendations are helpful. Thanks!

Hm...I've been suggesting this a lot lately, far more than I usually would at least but...
Final Fantasy XI, virtually any computer can handle it.
Now the community was rather nice (in...most places...most) The average player is nice and will talk to you and such, hell a good portion of em will even give you a hand but...stay away from the Elitists, I know thats a given in any MMO, but on XI they are by far the worst of the worst that I have ever seen.
Anyway.... You NEED friends to do anything later on in the game, I would say 50+ is when you need friends. Thus, it is rather easy to join a nice linkshell and such. The game has a mulititude of classes and content (although not many do ALL of the content anymore due to Abyssea, but a good linkshell will take newbs, or anyone who hasn't done it, through it.)
I wish you luck in your endeavors, and if you so happen to choose to visit Vanadiel, might I suggest Cerberus, it is a rather active server with kind people.
Thanks for the tip, omega.
I've considered checking back into FFXI (I'm a big FF fan, so it always appealed to me). I always just hated the starting experience and controls. But if it's worth enduring, I wouldn't mind starting up again. I've heard that there have been a lot of improvements since I last played as well.
Still, I would appreciate any other ideas. Omega's was very detailed and helpful, but I'm up for virtually anything at this point.
bump! Hoping for some more input
