AS a EU player i find this inacceptable. we are not in the 90th anymore but 2012. it is common sense by most mmo companies that the world don't go around USA anymore. i canceled my subcription already, for this and many other reasons, including the 0 costumer support this game has.
i hope any future mmo company dont follow this pathetic trend again.
I couldnt play on the Saturday and now i cant play on my day off today either, 8AM - 4PM
Doesnt bother me a whole great deal but i was hoping to ninja some levels on my char so i was higher then my mate lol
if this game was free to play, i coulden't care less. but guess what? we are paying a subscription fee here, 15 euros a month. i assure you, they want our European money as much as the American one.
So I get up Saturday, I've got a few hours free time, try to log in... servers down, maintenance for small patch...
Next chance to play today... guess what servers down again...
Had it last week too...
This was the reason I gave for cancelling my subscription last week. I have a few days left on my free month but it doesn't even look like I'll be able to use them.
I won't ever go back to this game unless they reduce the cost by 25% for european players.
FIX ALL THE PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
DON'T TAKE THE SERVERS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WAIT...WAIT...LAUNCH A COMPLETE GAME WITH NO BUGS WHOSE SERVERS ARE UP WHENEVER I WANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did I get that right? It's hard to stomp my feet in text. Do you get this mad when it's closing time at the bar? I know what REALLY grinds me the wrong way is when I want lunch and McDonlalds is only serving breakfast.
Im all for server maintenance that keeps the databases optimized and all that... But starting to question that nowadays when we have 24 hour services that don't get switched off things could be better?
Microsoft onLive services, Google search databases, Youtube...
Even if they did some kind of "rotation" of online servers to mask downtimes why couldn't this technology be integrated to mmorpgs?
On a serprate note: If this issue continues to expand, Why can't mmorpg do an editorial on the servers? A look behind the curtain to see what is actually involved to make mmorpg servers work. (even if it isnt all the truth due to trade/company secrets).
Seems like they have a good "working relationship" with Bioware to get that done right?

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Why can't BW revolve around EVERY SINGLE PERSON that is playing? Noone asked ME if 2AM was OK! Why not?
THAT is why we are QQing here! We cannot grasp the concept of "the world does not revolve around you"! Open your eyes man! I'm paying $15 a month, I should be running things here!
Not "everyone"...just ME! ME ME ME!!!!!! They should cater JUST to MY needs.
Guys, please refrain from attacking the OP, even sarcastically. And please stay on topic. This isn't a "this game is good or bad" thread. There are other ones for that, including the whole reviews forum.

The only game I played that had scheduled weekly downtimes is WoW. Rift doesn't have them, Aion doesn't have them, LOTRO doesn't have them and AOC doesn't have them so why does SWTOR have them? Just a question, that's all, no flameproof vest being worn
What's with all the hate from the 'I'm alright jack I'm American' brigade? Show some love for your fellow gamers across the pond please peeps

Regular server downtimes are used to things like
-backing up data
-compressing database + performing some routine operations like resetting lockdowns
-server restart resets all bugged npcs and mobs
It's possible to create server software that's designed to be up infinitely (or until next patch), but it's cheaper to create server software that slowly accumulates some clutter and is regularly cleaned up during maintenances. Also regular downtimes will remove the need to schedule new downtimes for every hardware replacement and software update, small things can be done during the regular maintenance window.

Then I shall call Bioware cheepskates! Seriously, thanks for answering
No offense to Rift, but if Star Wars The Old Republic was a fully loaded mustang... Rift would be an old crappy f150.
The F150 despite being old can handle more rugged terrain. But it does not have high maintenance costs, does not travel all that fast, doesn't look that good, and since it has a bigger gas tank it won't need to gas up that often. But when it does need to gas up.... oh buddy.
The mustang on the other hand looks better, performs better, is faster, sleeker, and more comfortable to drive in. But becaus of this you are more likely to put it in for maintenance more often because of that.
Think of... YOUR COMPUTER. If you have a crappy computer you will have problems running a really good game but really crappy (or older) games will run pretty smoothly on it. This is the same with hosting servers. Because SWTOR's data packages, interactions and software is just more complicated than Rift's it will require more maintenance.
I get the frustration over the last one because it wasn't announced ahead of time in any clear form and their choice of days certainly wasn't ideal in the least.
But this one? Give me a break . This was their regular scheduled maintenance which even if you were new is kind of hard to miss since they announced it as they always do for these ones beforehand on the forums and the launcher.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I can remember playing rift and seeing similar threads every patch but instead they were complaining that NA got the patch a day earlier than EU and threatening to quit over it, so no matter what a company will do people will complain.
If EU ever create a decent mmo then i personally would not care about the situation being reversed.
Why are they doing this? Why can't they just let the servers run themselves? Can't they just launch the game and then leave? My god think of all the money they would save if they just would leave the game alone and let it run itself. Why are they bothering to try to fix things?
Another thing, why don't they tell us ahead of time when they are doing this? At least make it THE SAME TIME EVERY WEEK! C'mon BW! Why are you trying to make the game better? Jeez!
Oh yeah why don't they alter the rotation of the Earth so that all maitenance times are early in the morning! That should be priority #1 BW!
Fixing and maintaining the servers... what is BW thinking!
today is the planned maintenance so you planned your gametime wrong today......i had the same feeling last saturday.
they are losing subs bcause of their server down times tough.......alot me thinks.
What sane game company plans "Scheduled Maintenance" for weekends? And often times, they will take the servers down on what amounts to prime time, such as midnight on a Saturday. By prime time, I mean the servers should be hands off during the weekend unless they are having an emergency of some sort.
To me, it's just another case of Bioware not knowing the first thing about how to build or run an MMORPG.
A sure sign that you are in an old, dying paradigm/mindset, is when you are scared of new ideas and new technology. Don't feel bad. The world is moving on without you, and you are welcome to yell "Get Off My Lawn!" all you want while it happens. You cannot, however, stop an idea whose time has come.
You guys dont get it because you dont understand that they take down the servers in the middle of the day for us Europeans. If they did it in US there would be riot in the streets.
Not really. People work. Have a life. I work 2nd shift here in America. So does a looooooot of others.
Parents wouldn't mind as kids could concentrate on homework since they cannot play right when they get home from school.
It's just a game and tuesday, maintenance day.
Eve online has full day downtimes sometimes, 6-8hrs here or there. It's based in Europe (Iceland). I don't beetch about it.
Ultima Online was and its memories still are.. my favorite MMO experience.
Relative to this thread... every day we had morning downtime.. tho it was region specific. So whatever, timezone your Shard was in.. the downtime was the correct morning time for that time zone.
It never bothered me that it went down every day.. tho it was relatively short.
We also had these epic wars at the crossroads after the server down message because nothing was saved... so a lot of people who didn't even like pvp would come out to fight.
That said... downtime in games now.. does irritate me. What irritates me even more is when almost all of them decide to use the same freakin day for it. Its like... um hello could someone use wednesday instead.. so I could kill time between renders playing something...

I've been playing MMOs long enough to know that unexpected downtime/emergency maintenance will happen, especially in the first few months, and that scheduled weekly maintenance will almost always go long in the first few months as well.
Thankfully, I have other hobbies as well as chores/duties to occupy me on the weekends/evenings.
Great time killer for server downtime?
Reading. Engages the mind like nothing else, is relaxing, and the hours just melt away without noticing.
A couple of ideas for those complaining about down times.
A. Find a new Genre, this happens with EVERY mmo in their first few months.
B. Find another hobby, You mean to tell me all you do is play mmos? you have no laundry or cleaning or even a book to read? You dont play ANY other games? go on a run, bike ride, skateboard, throw a football i mean cmon people how pathetic, do you not have a friend to just call up, hang out with, ya know in real life.
C. Get a girlfriend, if there is sooooo much server down time they will never have a reason to complain that your ignoring them to play video games.
Even if the servers didn't go down on Saturday , this is the regularly scheduled maintenance day. You should have known that you wouldn't be playing at this time.
It's been the same day/time since launch, plus they are releasing a patch.
Maybe it is the fact that it went down on Sat that perhaps they did not need to do it again today. When SOE did maintenance on Monday they did not do it again on scheduled Tue, or if they did maintenance Wed, then both Tue and Thu downtimes would get aborted. Same goes for LOTRO.
To me that sounds like doing it at about 4am US tume for US servers and 4am GMT for EU players, which was what SOE did with SWG, and Saturdays never had any updates / downtimes for EU players. Perhaps they mean at a time where it is off peak for EU players which inlcudes morning to afternnon I suppose, as well, and if that is the case then I guess they do not want to please the EU community at all. I play mainly mornings and afternooons so the downtime affects me
In SWG, when EU servers started around Oct 2003 they were still up, when US servers went down, as can remember playing on them whilst waiting on the US servers to come back up, as I started playing SWG in July 2003 as imported the game, and was playing on US servers. I did not mind the downtimes at that stage as they were US servers.
What is the point having US and EU servers when they all go down for maintenance at ths same time pointless.
Also they have been very unrelaible with it lately, as the downtime for Tue has been postponed twice, and been done on a Wed or Thu instead, and Fri as well!!. So, if trying to book a day off work, it is not possible, as there is no guarantee that there will not be another maintenance.
Why are they doing this? Why can't they just let the servers run themselves? Can't they just launch the game and then leave? My god think of all the money they would save if they just would leave the game alone and let it run itself. Why are they bothering to try to fix things?

Maybe they simply use the wrong technology. There actually are IT systems which can be patched at runtime with zero downtime. Ask Ericcson and their telecommunications system with a availability of >99%.
Erlang anyone?
Edit: And for the record, such telecommunication systems have a way higher load than our measly MMOs.
You mean like Rift having 99.5%+ uptime, patches/maintenance only last 20-30 min at resonable non peak times (even the one that gave us a 3gb patch). You would have thought that companys with budget several times larger could manage this also. I will expect nothing less from now on from any MMO released in 2012 - there is no excuse.
