Its more of a flop than the greatest success in gaming. Its not the worst but certainly not the best. Id play it as a sinlge player game but sadly single player games aint worth the $60 price tag either. It will have its star wars fan base and stay that way until they fade away. Just leave it at that.
For me SWTOR is not even a MMO it's so many instances and to much solo, and still it's labled as a MMORPG.
So as a MMORPG it fail really badly, as a SIngleplayer game with a monthly sub it fails even more if they took out the monthly sub like GW i would rate it much better,, I really dont like milking cows.
Really not happy with how SWTOR turned out. Seeing some of the rookie mistakes they pulled with this new patch isn't helping to improve my outlook on their game, except to further cement my relief at not having bought it.
That said, I say it is still a bit early to tell exactly how this game came out financially. Let's have this discussion again around Septembre.
Then how would you know at which you are speaking. Seems you have to have a little first hand experience before you can make any of those statements. Too many people make or state opinion out of opinion only without experience to back it up (or facts for that matter).
In my case, I have played early beta onward. I think that SWTOR is headed in the right direction. Patch 1.2 is not the patch to end all patches but it brings a lot of GOOD to the game. Examples (and just a few listed), Unified gear coloring; Legacy; major UI improvements; new Flashpoints...Ops (raids) and dailies; new gear; new graphics;and much more.
Just because I didn't buy it, does not mean I did not play it. Played my flatmates copy quite exstensively. Played all classes to at least level ten to see which I liked and played smuggler (saw bones) Marauder (carnage) to the high 30s when my friend abandonded the game with a month of credit left on the account. Plus since we have a LAN room set up in the house I got to watch the rest of them play the game quite a lot at 50, and messed about with endgame when afrementioned friend gave up the game. So please don't try and tell me what I do and don't know before you start making accusations. It just makes you look a reactionary ass.
I'm glad you like the game. Personaly however I think it was badly botched and nothing from interviews to patches they've put out makes me think they have the talent to pull this game out of the freefall they put it in.

Acording to Tor Status there are only 14 moderately populated US servers left along with 2 Euro moderately populated servers. This is after BW twiceadjusted the server status to make it appear more were playing. If you check it every day you can see the game is bleeding subscribers by a very large amount. I doubt there is even 500k left playing. They may have more subs but many subs that have quit the game before their sub expires. Maybe as low as 300k still playing. Server merges would help a ton and bring life to anumber of empty servers. If they do not do merges soon at the current rate of bleeding all servers will be empty in a few months except 4 or 5.
It is a flop but I don't think it should be regarded as a huge flop. There have been much worse games made. Maybe none that cost this much to make. Well no game has been even close to ToR's development costs. But there are some positives. Selling 2 million boxes is quite a feat. But normally a developer only gets 25% of the sale from retailers but because a large portion was direct online sales they would get a larger portion. But still nowhere near to cover their investment. Finacially it is a disaster. but for MMO gamers what was really lost here was potential. With this much money being invested we really should have gotten a game for the ages. In regards to ToRs reputation It seems to be on the road now to being regarded by most as a failure and its servers will likely be desterted quite quickly. Although with SW name it can redeem itself and get a second chance like EQ2 did after a poor release. But it will be very hard for it to ever gain a positive rep in the MMO community.
FYI, WOW you can solo just as much if not more, so if SWTOR is not an MMO, then neither is any other MMo, you people make me laugh....
The issue is to many gamers whine when games do not release fast enough and when they are not done they whine even more... This game did not do as good as some hoped but its still new and it did better then WOW did as released , WOW had a very laggy release, and the only reason it got so many subs was there was not many other good games and there was a nice generation of gamers that just came in, we can't see to get away from thet EQ, WOW forumla because of that generation the only way that will happen is kids need to stop whing and start thinking and stop asking for DEVS to add more hand holding in games and add less.....
The Secret World I hope to proves that we needed something different a themepark Sandbox mix, I bet most people who like WOW, won't touch it because they will have to think a bit in TSW... I have tested and played the game and played many games in the past 35 plus years and I can already see the whining, when TSW releases, and Tera, and GW2.............
People on this forum love to bash every game that come out on the market and destroy every game no matter if its good or not.... Gamers today really need to start making there own games and then come talk to the devs...Oh wait that means they would have to think...
Nevermind!
I love to see you do any end game by your self or flash points, WOW you could do everything solo, besides end game.. and instances, so please get your facts straight before you try and troll..
I doubt it will pan out to be a huge success or a major failure. Unless BioWare makes some major improvements, I see this game being only a modest success, bosting about the same number of subscribers as Rift by this time next year.

Not sure could really class it as an Epic Fail, but it definitely is a Fail, and while some are arguing that server mergers are needed, i don't really see that as something that would fix the underlying problems with the game, which is the grouping problem, or more accurately the hurdles in the way of grouping, the game desperately needs a grouping tool that would enable people to queue to join a flashpoint etc, regardless of their current location, i don't think anyone enjoys hanging around in fleet waiting for enough people to show an interest, or not, just so they can do these things, and the alternative is just solo gaming, again.. if the game had decent grouping functionality at launch, then they might even have been able to avoid needing a cross server grouping tool, as it stands now though, without that kind of functionality, it would be a wasted effort. so reminds me of the old adage, 'for want of a nail' of course that isnt the only problem with the game, but its one that everyone pretty much encounters and is a stumbling block to accessing a great deal of game content, or even just regular gameplay, without it, its hard not to think of the game as being soley a SPRG, companions don't equal, tbh, actual companions.. There are so many MMO's out there, that issues like this should have been obvious, and dealt with in the development process years ago, not be tripping them up with size 12 hobnails after game launch. How can this game not be a flop? they need to deal with the issue before it just becomes just another footnote in MMO history.

SWTOR might be profitable but it has done one thing great for MMO's. It has proven that you can not create the next great MMO by throwing money at it. Even with it's massive budget, there are a huge group of people that find the game boring. For most this happens after the first character is 50 and the annoyance of having VO for - every - quest really kicks in when you already know the story and just don't care. The endgame is exactly the same as WoW with pretty much zero change giving players absolutely nothing new to enjoy beyond the VO's which they are already sick of.
Big budget != Big sucess.
Exactly what I said from the beginning.
Full VO = stupid, superflous, and a time waster.
The ideal solution is still the one from Baldurs Gate - give me an introductionary line for the character, play a musical theme for the character (if its an important one, anyway), and display the full dialogue as text. I can read much faster than people speak, and I will have much less trouble to understand the text.
I would say it was the most unfinished big name release in gaming history in my experience. I played it for about 45 days and found plenty of things that I liked, but in the end I could not justify shelling out money for an unfinished product.
i think it was a little of both. Its sales was huge compared to many MMOs. Although the game itself didn't meet many players expectations some of that fault lies in players that just expect too much from games at release. Although many players feel its too late for it too succeed I feel the opposite. This game has alot of potential and if BW continues working out the issues and adding content it could very well last for years to come. I think the biggest issues they need to over come is coming up with a plan to merge servers and make world more open. Also, if they could do something like GW2 and make open world pvp involve a cluster of servers that might help mitigate some of the issues with unbalanced faction population.
I dont see how it can be called a flop....SWTOR has over 1.7 million subs (and thats not with the padded asian numbers like alot of other games)......IT may not be what some people wanted it to be, but I'd say its a success to this point anyway.
Wrong. It had 1.7 million box sales. By the end of January less then 800k had renewed after the first free month. Currently most servers are nearly empty, and the game is hemmoraging subs. If EA/Bioware does release current subscription numbers at any time in the near future I would be completely suprised if they were over 500k. The massive blunder with the rollout of 1.2 rated warzones is only gonna cost them even more subs with little real evidence 1.2 will bring back any significant numbers. You gotta remember past evidence has shown the PVP community is far larger then the Raiding community industry wide.
I would love to see youevidence for any of your claims. For instance, 1.7 million box sales? I could have sworn it was 2 million and 1.7 million currently subbed. Empty? Not even at the latest hours on any of the five servers I play on. Not releasing content that is not ready is a blunder? Strange, but I could have sworn releasing content before it is ready would be a blunder. PvP is a bigger community than Raiding? On what planet? Or are you lumping in games like COD with MMOs?
Seriously, sources please. Links and all.
As for the OP, I would say SWTOR is a little of both and a little of neither. It all depends on your perspective.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
As an mmo SWTOR is a HUGE flop. I wont judge this game as an mmo or single player. It was advertised and released an an mmo. Single player games dont have subscription fee.
Who created the hype over this game ? The players or the company ? If bioware wanted to do that, they should have been ready to support it.
In financial terms i cant see why it is succesful. We might need to redefine success. Although we are not shareholders and we shouldnt care about it, having a HUGE budget and a decreasing subscription data base, doesnt even balance it.
In general, i think they tried to fool players. They bet on the fact that ppl was bored of wow, and no other good mmo was around. They had a shinny title based on the movies, a great story to expand based on the StarWars universe, and the ruined both.
Ive played worse games in my life but none had a HUGE budget, a HUGE company behind. a HUGE hype, a HUGE advertising campaign. a HUGE theme like star wars, a HUGE fan base to take advantage of it.
Considering all these, YES SWTOR is the biggest flop in gaming history.

Perhaps you would care to show your source for 1.7 million currently subbed. It may have been 1.7 million back at launch... but now?
As for not releasing content that isn't ready I agree that's the correct way to do things. However, it's also probably not a great idea to announce to your players publicly and often that the content will be released in a certain patch then at the last minute retract that and say "oh no, it's not ready yet.."
But I guess they have to have something for future patches...

Actually it feels like there arent any mmorpgs at all out there currently. Every "mmorpg" I look at have no meaningful open world content besides leveling (in TOR you get moddable gear from group heroic quests, but you can also solo them after you out level them), the whole huge world is for leveling only, WoW for example has no open world group content at all, maybe a few quests here and there but I bet Blizzard has removed them too just like they did with the open world raids, elite quests and PvP... What a waste.
And no, I'm not interested in some low budget sandboxyish butt-ugly one feature wonder niche mmorpg, just to clarify before someone comes in with the usual "Why not play Darkfall or some other useless cheap piece of crap?" or something like Rift where you rinse and repeat the same damn "dynamic events" till the world ends.
Cannot wait for the breaking of themepark mold (with the return of open world group content).

I can't prove 1.7 million currently subbed and I don't have to. His number was flawed to begin with, that was my only point. To be honest though, not a single person outside of EA / BioWare can even begin to say how many are currently subbed to this game, so anyone else claiming any number what so ever is full of pure bull and should be called on it. That goes for the fans as well as the trolls.
While I agree that announcing content and then that content not making it doesn't look good, it happens in EVERY single industry all the time. In this particular case though, BioWare did the right thing. They announced that there testing showed that it was not ready and therefore would not be in the patch. That seems to be the case this time. Good on them for doing it the right way instead of the way a lot of other companies would have.
Seriously though, how would you expect this particular feature to be kept a secret until it went live? NDAs for the test servers now? It was a feature they coded and that needed to be tested, so of course people will know about it.

It`s nothing, this game has achived nothing. It will be remembered as a game among other games, games on the lower half when it comes to quality.
And todays epic fail with the WZ-update they have once again showed that they werent ready to make an Quality MMO.
For me... it was a HUGE FLOP.
Purely based on the fact, that I expected so much more from Bioware...
Compared to other AAA MMOs... it was OK - but largely unremarkable... unspectacular... very easy to put down and not play again after a few weeks.
