TERA Questions

RedKatanaRedKatana Member Posts: 211

Ok tomorrow morning will go pre order CE at Best Buy but I have few questions for anyone that is playing Korean TERA Online.

1) According to an Enmasse video I saw they said TERA is a open world sandbox game, how true is this? Is TERA open world or is it like Aion few zones that you teleport to? Aion to me personally feels very linear.

2) How is exploration, crafting, and economy?

3) I heard that TERA has PVP and since it's a action combat mmorpg how balanced are the classes? In Aion for example range damage would be OP towards melee.

4) Is PVP an option or you have to PVP regardless if you want to or not? I'm not really into PVP unless I'm playing CoD.

5) Please share anything ingame that amazed you while playing TERA.

Thanks in advance :)

Tera is a themepark game,  but it does have a Sandboxy feel to it mostly due to the world design.  It is a true open world.

Exploration is outstanding imo.  crafting: i have no idea, did not do it.  Economy was messed up about a year ago but sense then they have gotten a handle on it and its not too bad right now.

At lower levels the classes are REALLY unbalanced due to what class get what skill and when they get it,  It's farely balanced at higher levels but there are a few classes that own at 1 vs 1.  But its really comes down to player skill at controlling there character and not just spamming skills.

Tera will have PvP and PvE servers,  We don't really know for sure how the system will work for each.  Guess we wil find out soon enough.

    5) Please share anything ingame that amazed you while playing TERA.

Load up at few streams on twitch tv and let the game speak for its self.

    Thanks in advance :)

Thank you for all the answers, I really love the idea of open world and exploration so defently will pre order.

I figured posting a new thread would muck things up; I have one real question. How well does TERA hold up to a low player base? I like to know ahead of time before investing into things.

Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
    Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2

Well it had a low playerbase in Korea and still remained P2P and it`s been out for a year, the playerbase is actually now on a steady incline and Korea is still getting more content patches this month.

The game seems to be doing fine, and it also seems to have a suprising fanbase already in NA and EU so I don`t think the population will be too low.

Good to hear; I was just worried with the player involvement system they have, that a low pop would restrict players from actually playing the game.

No there is nothing in the game that you cannot do solo if that's what you mean.  If you are good enough (reaction times & recognizing "tells" from bam's) you can solo the party mobs.  They also have a "nerf bomb" in the game that you can use on campaign quest mobs if you cannot find a party but using the bombs comes at a price,  if used you will not get any EXP or Drops from the mob but will be able to progress the story arch and get the reward for completing the quest.  These bombs are rewards from doing quest in the game.

This is just my personal feelings.

The game wold is huge, and with the new content coming later this month, the world will get even bigger. The world is about 4x bigger that SWTOR atm, there are no loading screens and all zones are seamless. If your an explorer you will love this game.

But the game is a Themepark with some sandbox elements thrown in. At end game you either do the tier dungeon grind, pvp grind or BAM grind. There is a planned 20 man raid coming out this year.

Crafting is very much like Aion's crafting, same concept and same RNG. The best crafted gear in the game gives the same stats as BAM gear. Except you can look way cooler. Dungeon gear gives out the best gear in the game.

Now the economy in K-TERA is a mess, it costs 100's of million of gold to buy anything of any quality. It became such a mess because when TERA was first released there was no cooldowns on dungeons, and you could get 100's of thousands of gold from mob drops in those dungeons. So players ended up with literally a billion in gold.

BHS has since fixed this, but the damage has been done, and I know EME will not make the same mistake.

Don't worry about PVP, if you don't like it, EME will have PVE servers, with BG's. EME has stated you will not be forced into PVP on a PVE server, so we will have to wait on that issue.

As for game balance, this game is all about skill. If your a mouse clicker you gonna get killed in this game. I've seen any skilled player solo high lvl BAMS, and take on the best pvp's. Heck I've seen a mystic hold his own.

Some classes are harder to play than others. Warrior is an extremely hard class to play, as you have to dodge, evade, jump, duck everything. So there tends to be allot of bad warriors and they have gotten a bad name on the Korean Servers. But good ones are wonderful. Archer on the other hand is so easy to play, you just stand out of AOE and shoot.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, hope it helps!

1 - like someone else said it's a theme park, but it's persistent world with only a few instances.

2 - There are a few invisible walls here and there, but for the most part, it's a pretty open world. It's also extremely beautiful and is definitely going to be one of the best looking games when it comes out in NA.

Crafting is kind of boring. Collect stuff, buy/get recipes/go to a crafting salon and make items. I tried it and didn't enjoy it much, but it seems like it's the best way to get good items as the drops are mediocre usually.

3 - PVP is usually group vs group or duels unless you're on PVP server. you can watch a few youtube videos to get an idea what it's like. it's fun for me because I have like 20 ping for the most part, but if you have lag, you'll hate it.

There are no OP classes at the moment, but Slayer seems to be FOTM because of a few skills that it posseses. player skills are a lot more important though and i've seen slayers lose to various other classes.

    4 - its an option

5 - the characters are probably the most beautiful i've ever seen with one exception - Eve Online. Everything about this game is gorgeous!

    * there are a few things I would like to mention though:

If I were you, I would hold on on that pre-order for two reasons:

1 - the law suit may cause a huge problem because NCSoft is a powerhouse of a company and can cause a major damage to  Tera as a game

2 - play games like Vindictus first and see if you enjoy the combat system because this is what it's like in Tera

If you can't stand it, you'll probably hate the game over time because every battle will be: use power/strike/dodge OR cast/cast/cast/kite

Also, the game feels and plays like a stereotypical asian MMORPG.

the movements and the actions are very different from what we're used to in the west and even attacks/classes are very different from your typical WoW

e.g. archer is not really an archer. they have a magical bow that shoots energy but only 16 meters away. so it's a pretty short range weapon

Sorcerors rely on a lot of trap like and bomb like spells and you won't really be doing a lot of fireballs casting in the traditional sense

the priest/mystic class have a few strange powers too like e.g. they drop an egg that you have to pick up to heal yourself instead of healing people directly (at least at first, they do get a traditional heal later on, but waaaay later).

the melee classes however play as you would expect, but they are somewhat similar to each other at first, to the point of having same powers until mid levels, although attacking with different speeds and wearing different armor.

so in a sense, the classes are very unique and the gameplay is quite different, but this may disappoint a lot of NA players that are used to WoW dynamics

I personally like Tera in doses. I love bashing things with my slayer and I love exploring, but kind of hate questing and crafting. Boss fights and dungeons are pretty awesome though. You get to kill your first BAM (big ass monster) around lvl 9-10 and it is lots of fun.

Also, theoretically, if you're really really good, you could solo the entire dungeon and pretty much solo any mob by yourself, but you have to have a really good understanding of the game dynamics

I review lots of indie games and MMORPGs

Sounds good that differs a lot from wow I played FFXI for 7 years and FFXIV since release both with gamepad and read that you can play Tera with one too. I think I will fit right in.
