How much time do you spend keeping your companions weapons/armor up to date?

I am a level 34 Jedi Sentinel with a focus in the Combat tree. I found when I got into my last 20s, Kira was becoming more difficult to keep alive, so I switched to T7 after I upgraded his armor and weapons. There was a quest recently as part of my class quest where I was forced to use Kira as my companion. Unfortunately, I hadn't paid much attention to her for several levels which forced me to have a very weak companion against a elite of my level so I died. Eventually I was able to switch her with T7 and won easily. It made me realize I needed to do a better job keeping my unusued companions up to date. I don't like being forced to watch companions Im not using. Just curious how you are handling this? How much time do you spend and watch on the companions you are not using?

Farily often actually. One of them are usually getting my hand me downs and once I have gotten my commendation gear I will always take the companion upgrades.
I have Kira in a heavily modded elegant gown!
As a healer, my primary concern is keeping my chosen companion in good shape. I also craft my own armor, so I'm able to keep my other companions "close enough" for switching as needed. It also helps that, as a Trooper, all of my companions can use the same gear.

Quite a bit, actually. Doesn't HAVE to be as much time as I do my own gear, but pretty close.
I don't really spend much time at all on my companions... If I upgrade their gear, its usually the gear specific to the companion I'm using, only one character did I actually pay attention to what gear I gave them consistently and that was Risha, because even with really good gear she goes down quickly at the high levels... and she was my romance arc for that char.
Curious if you had any quests that forced you to use a certain companion you had not upgraded and how you handled it?

yea I guess as a crafter, that makes life much easier. I struggle to force myself to craft in any MMO, so I guess Im at a disadvantage. I just don't find it fun...but I can see why that would help in a game like this.

I upgrade their gear alot, even those that I dont use much, somewhat an obsession
Though, I dont find my self spending much time with it, somehow I just manage to do it along the way. I check AH for cheap pieces fitting companion while buying stuff for meself, I take companion item rewards if there's nothing better, then there's the random drops and I use alot moddable gear on them and the mods are often very very cheap on AH.
I want my companions also to look good, that's the hardest part when gearing them.
Every time I'm offered a choice of rewards that includes rewards for my companions I always choose the companion reward. I also choose the reward for whichever companion is with me at the moment.

Can you hand down old equipment? or is there companion specific equipment?
i hand down equpment quite often in STO, to my Bridge Officers.

Certain items can be handed down. With my JKG, I hand down implants and shield generators to t7. Also, when I remove older mods, I place them in Companion mod-able gear if needed.
lol, well I only use two of my companions. I do this with all my bioware games, I only use what I consider the "main companions". Easier that way. And it helps with the story narrative.

I've found that the best thing to do is to always take the quest rewards for the companion you're using when they are offered. Don't be afraid that your gear will fall behind because commendations combined with blue gear you get from completing quest chains should still keep your gear up to date.
Of course you can. I hand down my bounty hunter stuff to mako all the time. Both of us use pistols and both of us can wear medium armour. So whenever I upgrade my character I just hand down the stuff to mako. This frees me up to accept more comendations. I also hand down stuff we can't use to the other companions. Keeping your companions geared up is part of the game and I notice the people that complain the most about hard leveling fail to do this.

The (not-so) secret to soloing in SWTOR is to gear your companion first and yourself 2nd. This is especially so for classes that use a tank companion primarily. You should be getting your main companion's hand-me-downs (if you wear similar stuff) not the other way around.
As to gearing the other companions... you typically only need to use them on a quest in the planet where you get them and it's usually just one quest. Since you just got them, their gear will be up-to-date at that point.
Otherwise, most have their own class quests that unlock once they like you enough. If you someohow get one of those companion quests and the quest color is yellow or orange to you (unlikely) then maybe yes, you should gear them up before doing it. It's much more comon to get those quests when they are green or even grey...those you can probably complete with a naked companion.
Gear your main companion well and the other ones as stuff drops that you would otherwise vendor but don't sweat it.

I honestly didn't really bother outside of one particular companion, but I plan on taking a much more active role in gearing up (and gaining influence with) companions in additional playthroughs.

This actually is good for a tank. I do gear myself first with whatever tank gear I find, but I gear my DPS companion first with the DPS gear. Yeah I can take the hits and all, but that makes no difference if I can't kill them before they knock me down.
As for the answer to the question, I gear them all as much as I can afford to do. I am heavy PvP so I use that as my gear bin. 4 of my 6 companions are fully outfitted in PvP sets from level 40 and modded up with whatever I can find on the market.
As a DPS though yeah I could see you not caring as much. However, I think if you actually geared out your companions you might see a marked improvement in your soloing capability.

The quest that I struggled on was the one with Darth Angmar or whatever his name was and it forces you to use Kira. It was impossible to kill him with her since I ignored her forever and it doesn't warn you in advance you are going to have to use her. It would be nice I guess in the quest description if maybe in parenthesis they put (kira) lol.

I have never updated my companions gear and do notice they drop really fast during PvE. I am almost obsessive about updating my personal gear and checking on upgrades a few times every level ..... keeps me good and broke.
I have not reached end game on any of my characters and have a couple above 40. Going out of my way to upgrade gear every chance I get probably slows me down a bunch but I'm not complaining.
From what I've read I am in no hurry to reach endgame due to my moddable stuff not being up to par with endgame unmoddable purple gear. Kinda like to keep my own look as long as possible.
Every change I get? I don't know. I evaluate the drops and quest rewards and see if there's an upgrade. Upgrades for my character are prioritized over upgrades for my companion. If I can craft something that's an upgrade, whether it's for the character or the companion, I do so immediately.
I never purchase gear with credits. I will purchase gear with emblems, first for my character, then for my companion. I usually do this around the time I'm getting ready to leave a world so I can spend my emblems all at once and not have them sticking around doing nothing in my inventory. I know they don't take up space, but it bothers me to have them just sitting there.

The fully modifiable gear takes much longer to mess around with. I'm trying to have full sets of mod gear on my character and my companion. This is going to increase the amount of time I spend on gear tremendously, but it's also going to make my crafting profession more useful (to me).
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
None, companions are worthless at 50.
I keep Klem fully upgrades, as a healer I use him the most, but I also keep my pirate friend upto date with his blasters incase I need to burn a single mob fast, the rest I kind of ignore.
