There were several super bowl commercials with star wars themes.
Maybe that got people to log in.
The way I see it, all of these measurements are too micro in scale. The big picture has yet to develop atthis time.
Comparing current xfire or server status to launch is just silly. Comparing them to holiday weeks is kind of silly too.
Even if all of this data is accurate (which I highly doubt), it is still somewhat meaningless. I mean, the game is six weeks or so out of launch. Everything is still fluctuating. Over the coming year we will be able to see what the core population of this game is like. I suspect it will be a lot more meaningful once the competition hits later this year and we see who stays and who goes.
These day to day measurements of population seem quite meaningless to me compared to the long term health of the game.
Actually, it's dropped back down again now. If you look at the full range it spikes every weekend, so I guess those people who actually like it are busy during the rest of the week, huh?

I only play on the weekends. I finally realized that eventually I will get tired of any MMO I play and move on to the next. So, I might as well take it easy and enjoy real life, gaming as little as I can to keep me satisfied.
... or maybe they altered the reporting metrics of what what "heavy" population load is?
or maybe they didn't?
What a constructive response to my suggestion of one of many potential explainations.
The problem is Ceridith, your explaination, while possible, has a very heavy "tinfoil hat" bent to it. I can't say all around what the populations were like, but I noticed at least double and at times up to triple the number of people on the planets I was playing on last weekend, even in the "off" hours.
I think a better explaination for the larger numbers of people might actually be a combination of the Superbowl AND nothing else going on. The Superbowl did manage to keep a lot of people at home last weekend that might have otherwise gone out of town to do something, but that was only a few hours on Sunday. They still had a lot of other time to fill.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
That's got Superbowl and I stil have 10 day's on my sub written all over it.
I hate sport's also and would gladly play SWTOR over watching football anyday even with SWTOR's not being my idea of a good game.
Give this poster a gold star. You are correct. 100 million people watched the supperbowl. The under 13 y.o. at our party went online and played WoW.
Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven Boy: Why can't I talk to Him? Mom: We don't talk to Priests. As if it could exist, without being payed for. F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing. Even telemarketers wouldn't think that. It costs money to play. Therefore P2W.
So SWTOR, like nearly every MMORPG released in the last 5 years, has shown a fairly steady decrease in server population over hte last month. This is to be expected. Doesn't mean the game is dying...just that all recent MMORPGs tend to be stuffed to bursting at release and then settle down.
But something interesting happened over this weekend. According to the graph here: http://www.torstatus.net/shards/us/trends, SWTOR actually had a fairly significant population surge this weekend...reaching levels close to the beginning of January.
Any idea why this happened? Was there an influx of new players? Or did lots of people jsut decide to play SWTOR instead of watch the superbowl? It also could be something awry with that site's measuring methods...they just measure the "status" of the server.
What do you all think?
When i buy MMO game. I subscribe at least 1 month , even if I have many problems with it.
I allready bought it, so i made investment. I feel that at least I have to give it a chance.
And when i subscribe , I usually play compelled to play at least a bit.
This is what happens now,
There will be a small peak. And Bioware better use it to keep people in.
Otherwise - I always put the second month as point when user errosion starts seriously.

says the poster who offers a conspiracy theory as an 'explanation' lol. My response was just as constructive, and informative, as yours. [Mod Edit]

For example WAR nearly died at that moment.
