Another New Guy Thread...
So I have been debating playing Rift.
I have in the past, played to level 19.
It was fun but I think I was missing something.
This was during the summer, about 6 months ago.
Does the game get better?
Lots of friendly people?
I' was a big WoW player... Was debating quitting WoW since it's dumb hard to find groups randomly and what not.

Don't debate, go play it. I hear it's free to level 20 these days
Best option is to play the free version up to lvl 20 and see if you like it. I tried a free weekend and subbed for 4 months (3 + 1 free package). I used to play back in the day and glad I came back to it. The game does get better. End game is fun be it PvP or dungeons and raids.
I was in the same boat as you it seems. I preordered it, played 2 months then cancelled never giving Rift a fair shake. I've been back for 30 days and find the game is simply awesome. I found a great guild on Seastone (PvP) server that has around 50 people on at all times and as I type this we have 120 people total online including the mobile app.
Games is F2P to level 20.

At work now (teaching) however I'm sure when I make it home tonight I'll come on and give it a fair runthrough.
I've also noticed on Amazon it's 9.99 for the game with a free month of time :-p So that is definitely a possibility for a price like that.
In Amazon UK there's a special edition that can be found cheaper than the normal version and has 10 extra game time days. Search for it in the US one.
I just wish we could use these new game codes to extend our account ones, as it's cheaper for me to buy a new Rift game than extending my account time xD
Join a leveling guild. Find people in there to regularly group up with and you should have a lot of fun climbing to 50. Should take around 2 weeks to get to 50.
Rift
The Defiant seem to outnumber the Guardians from what I've seen, just FYI.
That's what I've heard as well. Well, as there's so much hate against religion nowadays it's not that farfetched that people stay away from the religious Guardians. Or maybe the Defiant just have a more badass, steampunk feel, I dunno.
I have chars both sides and have found the chat and people overall nicer in the Guardian side though. I can't say for high level PvP, but on lower Warfronts (10-20) I'd say it's 5050 win, at least from my experience there's no dominant side.
Note that I'm playing on EU side, so can't tell much about NA people servers. Only played there for a charitable event and it was pleasant enough.
I resubbed few days ago and transfered to Argent, its an EU shard. It shows medium population but the world is death empty. Everyone is level 50 doing warfronts and raids but even in Meridian i don't see more than 10 players. Invasions go by with handfull of people (5-10) showing up to fight. I'm level 42 atm but the world seems so dead I already cancelled my sub.
That seems odd, on a low pop US server Byriel, we've got much more population that what you report. Press "O" then search by level range and it should show you how many people are on in a given level range. It will only show one page per set of results so you might have to break it into smaller sections like 48-49 or 50 starting with A. It might be too that the side you're on is depopulated while the opposite side is much more populous, but at medium .. ah just looked it up.

That is not a medium pop shard, its a very low pop shard, it only peaks into medium from 12:30-4:00 (GMT -6)

Ok thanks for the info. I'll check one of these servers as soon as I get the option to transfer again.
Can't believe that chart for Bloodiron. The reason I didn't transfer to that server is because I saw 80 players in queue and I just wanted to get in and play. Now I see queues are not common for Bloodiron as I though at the moment. It looks most promising in any case.
