I they take it away then that is another story though..

Give it time and you will get wise to the shenanigans.  Cryptic knows they can make a fortune off these boxes, so they are conveniently closing down the one means players have to convert Dilithium into C-Points.  To be clear, they do not want you playing the game for free and collecting Dilithium for free, then converting that Dilithium to C-Points.  They are losing sales under that scenario.  Therefore, they shut down the method for getting "free" C-Points making you whip out your wallet and spending "real" money the only means for you to get keys etc.

My wife and I were almost willing to create two account subscriptions, but I am unwilling to reward deceptive and somewhat illegal behavior. This would have been illegal prior to 2001.

Cardasian ships , today , Jem-Hadar for X-mas , when do the Romulan, Borg etc.. ones become availible ? I find it hilarious that people are up in arms now . Cryptic has been pulling this crap since the game was announced . I guess the question begs , how high does the crap have to stack before people have figured out how bad Craptic is ?

You do understand that I havent spent a single sent on this game? and Im not going 2... All you whine about dont effect me.. People will put Those BOX items on the AH... ( I mean one moron Bought 30 boxes and dident get the ship, his epic whine on the forums was hilarious) now he probably has alot of stuff he needs to get ridd off and Im there to pick it up FOR FREE..

This game is only Fail if you are dumb enough to spend money and then whine about doing so...

Fallen Earth does the same. But in that game keys are also rare loot from Boss/Master mobs. Just more rare then the lock boxes.  And lock boxes themselves can contain keys also.

Maybe keys for those lock boxes are a rare drop too in STO?

I havent felt forced to whip out anything.. I really dont get this. Just because there is a chash shop do you all feel you have to buy from it?

I mean there is no meaningfull PvP in this game so there is no PAY to WIN... You really dont have to spend any money to play it.. Is it just me or am I missing some reason why you all think we need to rush/or be forced to go to the cash shop..

It will take me some time to get the dilithium to buy a Admiral shiop for free so even if the exchange is only open once a week it still wont effect me... Also I have got a free Admiral ship on both my klingon and Federation after they did there 2 year anaversary thing..

I personaly dont undestand why you all feel you are getting scamed.. Go play World of TANKS... then come back here and say STO isent Free to play... Feels like you have wery limited experince about shady tactics that force its players to PAY TO WIN..

First, not everyone plays STO for the same reasons as you.  Second, reading comprehension goes a long way.  I do not think you will find most folks feel they are being forced to do anything with the cash shop.  What they object to is the only means to get an item in game that they may like (eg. ships) is to buy a gift box/key where they only have a slight chance to get them, and these have to be paid for with real money.  Just poke around over at the official forums and you will see the posts where players are asking to just put the ships themselves into the C-Store and be done with it.  Personally, I have never complained about having to buy a ship that I might want.  I will complain, however, that these are put into "gift/lottery boxes" as the only method of getting them.

Turning off the Diltihium exchange - the only way for people to get C-Points for free - coupled with the flagrant XYZ@XWR won a Cardassian Galor Ship! spam is also what folks are objecting to.  You will note how the D-Exchange conveniently goes down a day before a "big weekend" when they know a ton of folks will be logging for the start of the new FE.

A crack dealer could make that same argument. "Hey all I do is stand here on this corner and people put money in my hand". Why should that be illegal too?

When you exploit people's weakness, it's still unethical and unfortunately due to a strange change in mindset among society, it is no longer considered illegal, well at least for corporation that is. What's next , snake oil ships?

It is a culmination of a lot of things really.  This is the company who said that they have a staff "smaller than a Starbucks" as an excuse as to why they cannot create new mission content and features, yet they can crank out cash shop items like it is going out of style.  How many times have they flip flopped or outright lied about KDF content?

    Did you catch the
Whiny babies post by captian Geko? on his Twitter feed? The devs just keep giving us gold. Actually, sorry. The post was made by Al Rivera to Geko.

Personally, I feel that if you want to talk this way about the community that plays your game, you should do it internally amongst your co-workers, and not on such a public place.

As things in the box can be traded they just have be a little patient and down the road they can buy it off the AH. But some people might feel they need it right now... I basing this off that some people are subbed to the game and get free C points each month... so people will open the BOXes...

OMG that is Really horrible... I think a dude might get slapped for being so Arrogant from were I come from...

Player (Harly-someting) just ranted in ESD that he will never buy a "stupid Lock Box". 5 minutes later he won a Galor. Said he bougth 8. This line comes wery close to the shit CCP hillmar was saying In EVE in the leaked Internal mail.. and us the player base almost shut down their hole game after it....

I still mentain we can avoid this LOCK BOX and get the itmes for free if we dont fall for the "SCAM" Ofc some other fool is gona have to take the hit.. but not much we can do about that now...

You are making quite a few assumptions here, such as subbers/lifers will use a stipend on keys.  Second, drop box contents are plentiful.  Cryptic has shut off the D-Exchange, which means the only way to get points atm is via stipend or buying it for cash.  If folks are less inclined to spend real money vs. grinding Dilithium and converting to points, that means less keys opening less boxes making the contents more rare.  Wonder what will happen to the price of those box contents on the exchange now that they are more rare?

Ah, clarification about this. The tweet in question was not made by a Cryptic dev, but was made by someone else, which was retweeted by Al Rivera. Even though he did not call people whiny babies, he still said "You go Terilynn!", which implies agreement.
    Original tweet below.

We have ding in game that lets us know as soon as someone gets something from a box, so yes people are opening boxes left and right... and as I mentioned before some poor tard bought 30 of them and still dident get that ship... so I guess all the things accept the ship will come up on the AH.. and a few months down the line we might see a few ships also, for insane prices but we will see them...

I would not put it past Cryptic to be padding those messages with phony handles to make the odds look better.  You can see for yourself the piss poor attitude the lead developer of STO has on his Twitter.  Were an employee here at my company to post that about our customers, they would be fired instantly.

Agreed. Right like it's not normal for F2P games to do just this. They did add the ability to get Cpoints for non-subscribers and the only real appeal of those boxes is for those who want the extremely rare ships. The ships the characters can buy with game money are just as good, and have multiple appearance options.

Can't imagine, other then for someone who's never played a F2P model or someone whining because the drop rate is so rare, why someone is complaining about something like this. The Jem'hadar ship was almost just like this accept you had to buy the box outright at least they learned from their mistake on that one and made the keys purchasable for F2P players without really the need for a sub or buying Cpoints with real money this time. The keys are really cheap.

I just made like a Million EC with selling lockboxes today, the things drop like candy everywhere and i don't give a shit about the ships.

More power to the people with disposable income i say. I'll buy my Galor for 400k EC when this is all over and the market flooded.

    Profit.

It sick actually. Last night I got 5 boxes dropped, and a mystery box as well. Sol them for 1.5 million ec. And the first thing I did yesterday was buy all the C points with dilitium I could. payed 189 for 200 c points, sold them for 238 four hours later. When I logged on this morning to sell some more, thats when I saw they patched the game overnight, to take out the Dilithium exchange.

I did read it. My point was that CBS is more than willing to ride the milking train on their I.P.; it's to be expected, actually. Now if they didn't have a history of doing this (milking the I.P. for every cent they possibly can), then I would say the decision was sad. Right now it is just business as usual.
