My first impressions of Lineage 2

Fly666monkeyFly666monkey Member UncommonPosts: 161

I will warn you now, this thread is going to contain some angry ranting.

After playing this game to level 20, I don't have many nice things to say.

So, having quit CoH a month back, and wanting to get into another MMO whilst waiting for Guild Wars 2, I deceided "what the heck" and downloaded Lineage 2.

After waiting for the 6 GB intstall to finish, I booted the game up, adjusted my settings, and logged in.

The first thing I noticed was how insanely limited character customization was. 8 hairstlyes, 3 faces, 4 hair colors, no sliders, and NO SKIN TONE OPTIONS. The world of lineage 2 is apparently as ethnically diverse as Utah. L2 probably has one of the worst character creation systems I have ever seen, and considering how much time they have had to expand this lackluster aspect of the game, there is no excuse for this.

So after making my character, I log into the game. The VERY FIRST mesage I recieve in my chat box is gold spam. We are off to a great start, and the best part is that he is broadcasting in the entire starter zone. Joy. At the same time, I find out that you can't use any chat functions whatsoever until level 20, so if at any time I needed help from another player, I was SOL. I can only assume that this is done to reduce gold spam. It clearly is working.

So I head off to get my first quest, and immediately found out that the controls SUCK. The game relies on click to move (Keyboard movement is a joke), and almost immediately the clik to move function stopped working for no reason, and didn't resume working until I used the arow keys. This would happen multiple times during gameplay.

Using the mouse to click on NPCs and monsters is also more difficult than it should be. You have to have your cursor exactly over what you are trying to click on, and not a pixel off, darnit! This often means that you will try to click on something and end up just walking in circles around it. This is especially frustrating during combat. Would it hurt to add a "Target nearest monster" button?

And then there's the camrea. Oh God, the camera.

First of all, going against all PC gaming logic, scrolling your mouse wheel forward zooms out, and scrolling it back zooms in. No other PC game I have played does this. Not that  there is any point, because the camera will zoom in whenever you get close to just about any object, or will simply reset for no reason at all. It's frustrating as hell when you just want to zoom out for a bit.

The worst thing about the game, though, is that it's boring. It's the same "Kill 10 rats" quest fest that I have done in countless MMORPGs before, just with worse controls. Nothing I have done in this game so far has me hooked.

I sincerly hope this game gets better later on, because as it is I dont have much incentive to log in again.

If you are not enjoying the game now why force your self to play further hoping it will get fun. Quit and go play something else.

    Totally agree with Mannish

I have to say that L2 is having some technical problems since F2P but its a great game. If you dont like it, just leave it.

It's not en easy game to get into that's for sure. The controls feel weird because they're different from what we're used to. But that's no biggie, you just have to adapt.

The real issue you're going to face once you reach higher levels is that this game is all about mob grinding. If you find killing monsters repeatedly to be boring then really you should do yourself a favor and uninstall.

This game is for people who enjoy mob grinding and who have the time for it.

If you do enjoy grinding however, then this is the best MMO out there atm. It has depth, immersion, an open world, meaningful PvP, player run economy and a hardcore levelling curve that'll keep you hooked for years.

NCwest servers are plagued with bots and gold sellers, they always have been and it's only gotten worse since the game went F2P.

There is an alternative to playing on NCwest servers though. Innova recently bought the EU license to run the game and they opened 2 fresh servers last month. These Innova people are proactive against bots and gold spammers so it's much less of an issue here than there.

Lineage 2 is not the latest piece of garbage you're used to play.

It's a declared masterpiece for the whole mmo community, so nobody cares about your noobish first impressions.

I played CoH for about 5 years, and I played Lin2 for about a year.

CoH spoiled you for customization; the two games could not be more different in character appearence.

Lin 2 does have better graphics though. Eye candy for the win?

I could not handle the grind in Lin2, and gave up, but I might give it another try now with the f2p option.

But, I would suggest playing Lin2 for a while longer; you might get used to the controls. I did and I am the type to rage quit if I can't figure out the controls in a game :)

First impressions are intense, but when you get past the learning  curve it can change.

I d/l and tried this game out this week as well, and stopped playing what i felt was an enjoyable game because of the poor controls.  The game seems to be riddled with movement bugs all over the place.  When i had reached lvl 30 I had already got stuck in 3 infinite loops of sliding on terrain.  Traveling near any sort of wall or tree would cause my character to just stop moving and hang up for several seconds before being able to move again.  Gave up trying the wasd controls around lvl 10 because the RMB didn't control direction half the time, and instead just shifted the camera angel.

The controls just seemed to be a gigantic mess even using the point and click method, and then so many movement bugs I didn't want to bother with leveling past 35 or so.  While the game is fun; moving in this game is anti-fun.  :(

Lineage 2 is a true rarity, in that it requires an honest effort to get anything meaningful out of it.  It's so different from more mainstream titles that it's most endearing features are often listed as flaws in reviews!  From what I've seen over the years, mismanagment has done far more damage to this game's population than any angry critic.  Now that it's free to try, people can form their own impressions!

Also, why is there a first impressions post on a game that is like.. 8-9 years old?

Sonny, in my day we had to grind for 2+ weeks just to get to level 20, and we didn't have good wiki's for the game, so your class quest could take even longer if you couldn't find the 1 NPC you were looking for.  Let alone your 2nd class change which was actually 3 quests, which depending on your class could take days (and in some cases, be completely worth it).

This is an old game, based around old ideals.  I suggest you jump ship if you don't like it.  They may have made it 10x eaiser, but it's still an old time PvP based korean grinder, and it doesn't try to be anything else.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

I'm perfectly fine with the character creation options of L2 ... granted, more would be nice, but the strong limits allow less graphic and network lag in the central aspect of the game, the mass PvP events.

I didnt noticed any of the other aspects mentioned here, back when I was playing. I dont call "click to run" games a bad idea per se. Its actually something I miss sometimes in other games. Just click near the horizont and you can see your character running for a while, with nothing to be done by you. And I definitely loved that you could assign Alt+F4 a function in L2. I definitely never kept running around a mob trying to click it.

Gold spammers ... well, yeah. Thats an issue.

This just shows that you have no idea what Lineage 2 is about. The games are totally different in every way possible.

i guess all the server packed full of player in lineage 2 dont know their gaming stuff(sarcasm)they never experienced the awsomeness of other game!come on!be real they dont go to lineage2 by luck they go there BY CHOICE.but you only get to know why if you actually reach endgame and i hope nobody say why!saying it doesnt begin to tell the way it trully is!in my book if they fix the protection speed and fix the character clic stuck bug related to wasd .)(doesnt affect click to move)they ll have fixed the main issue of the game!cause lets face it most that dont reach end game in here dont because of the wasd issue .wasd is needed for the vast majority of english player!

The only thing I have to say to this after playing this game for 7 years is hahaha you have no idea what this games about its about getting to max lvl not being max lvl the fun thing about being max lvl was castle sieges other then that and waiting on new content which didnt have to buy extra was a major plus but it took alot longer for it to come and added that much more to the game. As for everything else take out WASD controls this game dont need them played fine with out for what 8 yrs. Also this game has a ton of content more then any game even WoW as I am not the only one that feels this way. But It took a long time to get to max lvl not 2 weeks or a month but more like a 1 yr so its more about the journey than it is endgame cause you wouldn't no anyone I met alot of friends in this game alot more in it then almost any game beside EQ:OA. In Wow I had 3 or 4 friends I knew and they where all ex EQ1 players. I also can say If you dont try to get past lvl 20 in this you will never see just how big this game really is it takes a long time or did sense F2P I can lvl a toon to 75 even 80 alot fast so 2 months maybe less to max lvl and with alot more end game as you call it content such as raids and instances. This game is a major gear grind though and takes a alot of time to get not so sure about now cause I haven't tried to get there.

I 100% agree with you i played L2 for the better part of 4 and a half years and had 4 paid subs so i could multi box. The game didn't hand feed you and the player made politics was what made this game a true wonder. Though like anything it finally gets old and you look for something new.

Only problem is that all the new poop that has been released so far can't compare. They claim to be MMO's, but most seem to be single player co-op's.

Would I go back to L2; not in a heart beat first off the L2 devs are now Blue Hole studios and secondly as i said played from release for 4 and a half years.

Having read the rest of the post, this part strikes me as funny from the get-go. You decided to try the game on a "what the heck" whim, and yet you let it anger you to such a degree? Interesting. Your post comes across more like you had high hopes and came away betrayed and dismayed.

And anyway, why would something that you can simply quit out of, uninstall and never log into again, without spending a dime to do so anger you? You tried it. You didn't like it. You uninstalled it. I'm sure it's not the first time.

After waiting for the 6 GB intstall to finish, I booted the game up, adjusted my settings, and logged in.

6 gigs is pretty moderate for a game these days, MMO or otherwise. Not sure if your mentioning that was supposed to be a complaint, or...?

The first thing I noticed was how insanely limited character customization was. 8 hairstlyes, 3 faces, 4 hair colors, no sliders, and NO SKIN TONE OPTIONS. The world of lineage 2 is apparently as ethnically diverse as Utah. L2 probably has one of the worst character creation systems I have ever seen, and considering how much time they have had to expand this lackluster aspect of the game, there is no excuse for this.

I guess NCSoft didn't get the memo when they were designing the game over 8 years ago that you'd be picking it up to check it out on a whim many years later. Oops!

Maybe they'll give you a refund if you ask nicely.

All joking aside, I enjoy a good character customization setup as much as the next guy. I could (and have) spend hours overall tweaking everything if given the chance. In L2, though, that kinda thing really doesn't make that big a difference, to be honest. In L2, your name, your reputation, and your clan/alliance are how you're identified. That you chose Face B, Hair C and Color D at character creation means, very very little.

Yes. There's Adena spam in L2. Always has been. Always will be. You know what, though? L2 is not special in that regard. Last time I logged into WoW, I got Gold spam within minutes of logging in. Same with WAR. Same with LoTRO. Same with various other MMOs. Know why? Because RMT is a huge business and no matter what game it is or what measures the developers take to stem it, the RMT companies will always find a work-around and get through to the players anyway. That's just the way of it.

So I head off to get my first quest, and immediately found out that the controls SUCK. The game relies on click to move (Keyboard movement is a joke), and almost immediately the clik to move function stopped working for no reason, and didn't resume working until I used the arow keys. This would happen multiple times during gameplay.

That you're not used to it does not mean it sucks. It means you're not used to it and are apparently not the type of adapt willingly to something new. As for the getting stuck, yeah that's something that's cropped up since it went F2P. It's annoying, I'll give you that. No idea what's going on there. But then, I think NC has screwed up a lot of things since they went F2P, which is why I decided to stop playing it 'til they get them ironed out.

It can be frustrating, especially when you and/or they are moving. I'm pretty sure I remember there being a hotkey you could use to target the nearest mob and then cycle through them, though. If I remember right.

Again, takes getting used to. It's not worse than the mouse wheel working the other way. It's just different. Have you never had to adapt to a new or different control scheme when you've played other games? Did you adapt to the changes, or did you throw down the controller in frustration over the developers not making it work exactly like other games you'd played?

The worst thing about the game, though, is that it's boring. It's the same "Kill 10 rats" quest fest that I have done in countless MMORPGs before, just with worse controls. Nothing I have done in this game so far has me hooked.

Now this statement you are making on very little experience. I guess it should be said, and maybe it already has, but L2 is not about PvE. I mean, PvE is there moreso now than it was prior to Goddess of Destruction. But the game is PvP at its heart. It's about castle sieges, clan wars, player politics, alliances, rivalries, competition and so forth. The PvE content is really a backdrop to all that. Grinding mobs or quests as it were is really just a means to an end.

I don't blame you for not knowing that. You just started out, so how could you. It's not even an unreasonable conclusion you come to, as I did at first as well. And for me, "at first" was years ago right after the game launched when the leveling curve was a lot slower and there were hardly any quests to speak of.

But, at some point, you get a taste of the things I mentioned above, and you slowly start to "get" what the game is about. Assuming it's attractive enough to you to continue, before long, you see grinding mobs and doing quests as merely a side-activity to the main activities which are, again, the PvP related things. Making your way into a clan that's active in PvP and server politics goes a long way in helping get that experience.

I sincerly hope this game gets better later on, because as it is I dont have much incentive to log in again.

It certainly does and has for many people over many years. That's no guarantee that it will for you, though. It may just not be the game for you at the end of the day. If you don't like it, you don't like it.

L2 is the epitome of what was wrong with asian grinders.

Some may call it a masterpiece, however typically masterpieces are replicated, immitated, and may will attempt to do it.  The L2 model of mmorpg stayed with L2.  No one ever tried to redo it for a reason.

In fact, if im not mistaken L2 attempted to emulated other games that were fairing better.

Regardless...theres a reason not even korean game makers attempt to recreate the insane grind, horrible movement and functionality that L2 offerd.

I just installed this last night and played for a few hours, I actually did not see any gold spam in game, (probably got lucky after reading other posts), and aside from the controls I really didnt have any issue with the game. I actually really enjoyed the game myself. I may play it until the few games im waiting on get released or I get hooked on it. Still not something I would abandon just because im not used to the controls.
