Rift was one of those games where it was linear enough that playing real after playing beta couldnt capture the magic of the first run through. Yes it was a little more polished in the end (at the expense of a lot of fun options) but really it felt like playing the same story a second time. It also made having an alt in the real game exceedingly painful as it would have meant a third run through.
These days games are less like a DaoC or a Vanguard where you got into beta early enough that the release version would be far enough removed from your experience initially that it wouldnt hurt things much and it isnt like you can start all the way across the world and for the most part avoid any zones you played in before like an Everquest before expansions.
At any rate -- the question stands:
Is Tera the kind of game where you have a better play experience if you just avoid the beta and buy the game for the headstart or simply the launch? Or will missing headstart put you "hopelessly behind the curve" as it would in some games or "hopelessly behind the curve and slaughtered -- like it would have in Aion"
Lastly -- will they be opening any new servers for launch that were not open during the headstart? In that case there is no personal behind -- just a global behind.

I think the combat system alone is worth trying it in beta,it takes a while to get used to and pratice makes perfect.
I'd say it would kill the immersion, I know an irl friend who wants to kick WoW finally with TERA because nothing captured the immersion of the first time he played Vanilla WoW so he always ends up back there. So he's skipping the BETA not to ruin anything.
As for the combat, it takes practice, getting up to speed with reacting to monsters attacks and looking for subtle movements(like the Naga's tail twitches before whiping) will take some practice.
However I don't think you'd suffer greatly if you didn't do BETA and started from scratch, lots of players would surely answer your questions if you ask in game.
i am not a pve fan..
But..
Tera offers different gameplay then all the others
I enjoyed agrro ing 5 spawn mobs with my lev22 mystic during the testing fases..
But to me it will lack on pvp.. hopefully they will patch pvp elements in a later stage..
Also a beta key can be purchased for 5 euro.. not really a big deal
In my opinion, I don't think the game gets to stale if you played the beta and then played the live game. Again my opinion so far of playing multiple characters in CBT1 is the questing is not really the greatest part of this game but I do enjoy the combat system enough to know I can play the game when it comes out and not be bored or sad that I already have seen the content.
The questing is pretty simplistic as with most MMO's these days. It doesn't grab you in like say SWTOR story quest would but the nice thing in my opinion is the quest are quick and the system they have in place makes finding the items, mobs, etc you need really really easy (open quest tab up click blue link to mob name and it shows up on your map).
Now on the other hand I have been in multiple beta test for different games and I attack it differently than I would guess most people do. I am not playing the game to really focus on what I enjoy about the game although there is plenty of that, I play it to find bugs so I do the quest and look for anything that maybe not functioning correctly or to suggest changing game mechanics to make it easier/more fun to play for people during live. I really wish more people did this but can understand that you find a game you like and just want to play it but you may or may not actually report game issues and bugs. This also keeps the game refreshing for me when I play live because then I am playing to enjoy the game not to find bugs.
I am sure you will get different opinions here and there seems to be a lot of people saying different things about this game. I think if you're up in the air with it wait until open beta to give it a try. They have stated that your open beta toon will carry over to live so it gives you a really good chance to try the game for free without having to worry about losing your character or needing to do the quest over again.
Either way I hope my opinion on the subject helped you a little bit and if you have any questions feel free to ask and I am sure people will give you some feed back (can't promised it won't be unbiased though!)
If I play Tera or any game infact, I will try all melee or ranged classes available. A beta gives me a chance pick my race/class for future gaming.. if done correctly gives the game dev's a chance to observe and deal with flaws in the gameplay, issues with hardware and such.. Its the developers way to get feedback at a very low cost.. they then iron out any major issues before launch. I guess the Korean launch/beta has already ironed out a lot of the hardware/software issues, so for EU/US beta players, folk should be will mainly focusing on translation cockups and while your at it, have a little fun!
All hail the Barn Owl! oh.. and the RED SQUIRREL!!!
