Tera: Using a controller: opinions & questions

MMOExposedMMOExposed Member RarePosts: 7,400

I have a question, but I would also like to know the opinions of people that have tried it out using controller.

Well since controllers have fewer keys than keyboard, I was wondering if controller play has a big disadvantage in the game?

also for each class, is there a limited set of skills a player can have in combat at a time (similar to how in GW you can only have 8 skills)

and if so, how many skills can you use in combat at a time?

Skills at a time? What do you mean, like on your actionbar? I think you can have every skill you have if you want.

As for controllers I haven't used them myself but i've heard from many it's perfectly playable with a gamepad, xbox and ps3 controllers. Although from what i've heard it is slightly more difficult, but can be used just fine.

I played with both a controller and with KB/Mouse an equal amount of time during the Beta.

I used a wired xbox 360 controller. It actually works very well for the combat. You can have 4 skills mapped to the X-Y-A-B buttons, use bumpers / triggers to change that, so I think can have up to 16 actions mapped to controller layout.  Can map actions, menu, skills, ect to the controller, very good customization for layout and key mapping.

When you plug in a controller a GUI comes up . You can drag / drop, access all menus, change gear, quest logs, craft, ect ect with controller. It is slower than a Mouse / kb due to having to use an analog stick to move the pointer.

I played for several hours on a 47" LCD TV. Looked and played great, had a bit of trouble with the font being small but there may be a setting for that.

Overall A+ on the controller implementation IMO. Its actually designed with controller or KB/ mouse use in mind.

What I will probably continue to do is play with controller at my computer desk. That way I can access menus, craft, chat, ect with KB/Mouse but when out killing mobs/ questing, ect use a controller.

I work in front of a computer all day, many days I am just tired of being stuck in front of a keyboard when I get off. Having the controller as a viable option for play appeals to me alot.

Hope that helps. That was my experience. I am sure some people hate the controller =)

Using a controller doesnt disable your keyboard and mouse.

Yes, you will have more skills available at max level than can be mapped to a controller. However, you dont need instant access to every skill.

I had my important skills on the controller and rarely used skills on the keyboard.

I believe the controller was part of why I enjoyed this game, since as jdnewell said when you mostly use mouse+keyboard as medium for playing games, a good old Joystick brings back some fun.

The left and right bumpers on a 360 controller work like "SHIFT" and "ALT" keys, so you can map the A,B,X,Y,LT,RT 3 times. Though I believe X and LT are reserved for Jump an Interact (F-key on keyboard)in normal mode, so only twice for the 2.

I highly suggest to pump up the turning speed when using gamepads, by increasing the mouse(!) sensitivity. I tried it relative lately and it improved my gameplay a lot.
