I WANT to like TERA, but then the reality set in last night :(!

FadedbombFadedbomb Member Posts: 2,081

The Overview (TL;DR? Go to "Recap"):

So after dealing with IGN's completely broken account system ever since they started to move from an older login system I was able to log into TERA for about 8hours last night.

Only to find, that the game starts off as YET ANOTHER Linear-Handholding Themepark. Now, don't get me wrong. I WANTED to love TERA ever since I saw the combat & all the features BlueHole had been talking about for the game over the past 2years.

So, after trying SO VERY HARD to shrug off the fact that TERA was, in fact, ANOTHER Linear Themepark (at least for the first 20 levels, hopefully?) I was able to start enjoying myself around level 8. However, after reaching level 15 with my Popori Slayer (which is more satisfying than you could imagine to be a tiny badger guy flipping through the air with a GIANT sword) I found myself FORCING myself to continue. I literally lost interest at level 17 altogether, and wound up deleting my 15 Popori Slayer (1 character per server in beta?) to try all the different classes to HOPEFULLY find something that could keep my interest.

Unfortunately, by the 8th hour into TERA I had tried ALL the classes up to about level 10, with slayer being my highest at 17, and ended up logging out before the CB1 closed out. The combat is fun to begin with, but then it gets VERY repetitive & boring once you learn how a specific "type" of monster attacks. Some attack quickly, some attack VERY slowly with HIGHLY predictable animations, and some are just so laughably designed in terms of combat tactics that you go "is that it?" at the end.

All in all, I unfortunately did NOT reach level 20 so I'm not sure if TERA opens up after 20 (a poor design choice as a game SHOULD "hook" you from beginning to end, from one element to another of the game) so I'm not the person to ask if 20+ TERA is any better. However, 8hours, trying all the classes, and being struck with the "This is a Themepark" sensation right off the bat completely destroyed my likelyhood of ever Pre-Ordering, or even playing for that matter, TERA by the time it comes out.

The Recap:

-Combat is fun and innovative at "first", and then becomes repetitive & boring for PVE, HOWEVER PVP in TERA is very fun as combat against other players seems to "evolve" as you fight someone more and more into a fight.

-Leveling 1-17 is ALL hand-holding quest driven, and is about as Linear as it gets. Again, a VERY poor choice on BlueHole's end for TERA's first 17 (or 20?) levels to introduce the player into WHAT TERA is really "about". Overall, the largest deterant for a new player to TERA who was looking for something OTHER THAN another Linear Themepark.

-Some classes leave you with a sense of "So what's the point here?". The most GLARING would have to be the Berserker & Warrior. Albeit, I'm told both are being "buffed" for CB2, but the point still remains WHAT really could be the point of an obtrusively slow class with a MASSIVE hit index like the Berserker when you have a Slayer that is FAR more agile & deals MORE burst damage over time thoughout a fight (again, design choice so no matter how many times they buff the Zerker this should never change). Not to mention that the "Warrior" is really just a disguised "Rogue" class that uses swords instead of daggers & armor instead of leather. Again, Warrior is NOT meant to be a tank.....nor is it meant to be a DPSer so what REALLy is the point? However, a Warrior is actually the MOST agile class in the game. So, still not REALLY seeing the point here?

Nitpicking aside, what were your experiences with TERA? Did you get past 20, and if so did the game REALLY "drastrically" change from the 1-17 experience, or were they essentially the same? (Instance running doesn't count, as that is a MAJOR feature of Linear-Themeparks).

Got to 22 on both characters, absolutely loved the game, the beginning isn`t the best, just like every single other MMO i`ve played.

Zerker is meant to be slow, many love the playstyle, also zerkers deal more damage than a slayer. Warrior is meant to be fast, people like the playstyle. I for one find warrior extremely enjoyable. Deleting your 15 slayer was kind of silly, to just start over and do the most boring things again and again and again like you said.

I get handheld in WoW to level 60+, Rift is also handheld and easy, both are also more boring combat yet so many people do that, I don`t know how so many managed to quit on TERA even earlier, maybe they just expect too much.

I had quite a few games in the past where the beginning "hooked" me all the way to cap, and then I either RvR'ed, PvP'ed, or Raided until my guilds left years into the game for other games.

TERA, just isn't what it was setup to be over the past 2years of watching it. :(

you know you're not obliged to kill much anything , the main quest ( red exclamation mark) is mostly click and go ... If you really hated being handed a cord to level you could always go grind mob or do pvp instance ( by the next beta it should be possible....

What are you talking about? I had a level 17 Slayer and deleted it. Had a level 14 Warrior, deleted that. Had a level 11 Mystic deleted that.

Etc, so I'm not sure what you're talking about as you were ONLY allowed 1 character per server for CB1. It would be stupid of BlueHole to limit you to 1 character past lvl 5 for 7days when the event was only for 60hrs, or from the 10th to the 12th.

Did you even play the CB1 USA weekend event? I didn't run into a "deletion" timer whatsoever.

Now I don`t believe you, if you watched it for two years you`d know what to expect and what gets better later on.

Uh no, there was no indication whatsoever that TERA was going to be a hand-holding Linear quest MMO.

Why are you suddenly getting hostile? There's no reason for it whatsoever.

Everything I mentioned in my OP was correct information. Sorrow was mistaken about the 7day deletion timer.

Sounds like a classic MMO burn-out. I can totally relate to the arguments used, since I am suffering from them as well :).

Frankly, I won't even be trying TERA, even though the itch is starting.......NO! Hang in there, Biz, don't get caught up in another dissappointment again!

I was under the impression you couldn`t delete characters in the CBT1 above level 5, atleast from what I read, it also wasn`t allowed on the EU sneak peak. I may be wrong, I just jumped to conclusions after I saw Fadeds post.

Sorry but I am not, I deleted a few under level 5 and tried deleting above level 5 and had mine sitting there waiting for deletion when the event ended.

As i said .. .the quest are there that does not mean you have to absolutely do them .... I did a couple repeatable for leveling and i kind of enjoyed killing a specific mob for a couple hours because it was great fighting them ( if you didnt notice the mob with specials are the one mostly used for repeatable giving you somewhat of a challenge).

Yea, I'm looking @ my desktop atm, and realising that I'm also paying for a EvE subscription that I don't log into in order to NOT fall behind on SkillPoints (currently around 50million?).

I'm just waiting for Planetside2, ArcheAge, and w/e else might sooth my craving for a true MMO :(!

You ARE, in fact, mistaken. I just hopped down a couple channels in TS3 to see if anyone else ran into a "deletion" timer for the US CB1 this weekend and NONE of them ran into it.

Similarly, I nor anyone else I played with ran into it.

Again, did you even play the USA CB1 weekend?

Not to burn you faded but if you do not enjoy the current wave of mmorpg you will be deceived by the next wave as well ... Sometime it's better to just hang over your ski :)

There is no "Current", "Past", or "Future" waves of MMORPGs :)!

I wasn't truly deceived, but was merely sidestepped by TERA. It wasn't something I was considering a TRUE "wakeup call" for the MMO industry like I am for some other MMOs that are coming out in the next year. However, I've been in this preverbial "soup" so many times over the past 15years that it's fairly hard to get me hyped about a single game that is going to come out anymore.

In fact, i'm still HIGHLY sceptical about Planetside 2, EQ:Next, ArchAge, Dominus, and some other MMOs that I've got my eye on. However, time will tell, and from where I'm sitting it looks like Themeparks are going out of style QUICK with the consumer base.

I fully agree with the op, tested korean tera and its another asian mmorpg with nice colours and graphics , with a different combat system that is quite boring and frustrating, an mmorpg doesnt need to bring something new,,,,just bring things that are provem that work.

Swtor is linear??? just play tera and you with consider swtor a sandbox.

Tab target combat is bad, linear, boring ?? play tera and see what these words really mean.

I never find the beginning of ANY MMO very interesting anymore. My main goal nowadays is to power level to max and PvP. To me, that is what is fun.

Although I pre-ordered Tera, I'm still waaaay more interested in Dominus to get my overall PvP-centric MMO fix.

For me, at least, Planetside 2 will be my "PvP-centric" MMO fix. I'm hoping they don't skew it too far from the original's greatness.

However, I've yet to see a sequel of an MMO do well.

I did and fighting level 20 Arakia with a party of five was more fun than anything I did in Rift or WoW from level 1-40.

I'm sure I deleted at least one character who hit level 6 during CB1. Aside from the confirmation dialogue that requires you to type in the characters name, no other safeguards come to mind. That said, I don't think I'd mind such a system once we have 8-9 character slots to play around with.

In regards to OP: Can probably count on both hands, the number of MMO's that DON'T use the bread-crumb-trail method of questing. And of those, most seem have other game-breaking flaws. Thank god for single player games, I suppose. But it might be worth your time to try hitting lvl20 and screwing around with some more interesting combat available at this point.

Themeparks aren't going out of style. SWTOR and RIFT are the biggest hits in the genre for a long time and they are both themepark not to mention the "saviour" GW2.

I myself really enjoyed TERA and actually find it less of a grind than SWTOR. The overall gameplay was really fun and it seems like it has some really nice features already in place with a lot of depth. The player vendors came as a surprise.

I'm very skeptical of Planetside 2. I love FPS games. I grew up playing high level competitive Quake1, and then played Quake 2, 3 like it was a religion. However, I've sorta come to realize that the best skill based games will never be MMOFPS games. I'm just sitting around waiting for Quake5 haha.
