"The Mists is the oldest thing in existence and the space between worlds and realms, connecting to all worlds and binding the multiverse together, including the past, present, and future, and is the source of all things and where creatures from across the worlds converge. The Mists is the proto-reality that exists between the worlds which in turn are the building blocks of reality. It is where the various afterlives and the homes of various gods and other powerful entities reside. The Mists resonate from the worlds around them, forming bits of their own reality - islands of existence that reflect the histories of their worlds.[1]
In the center of the Mists, and in turn the center of the multiverse, lies the Rift and which holds the Hall of Heroes at its center. The Mists are accessable via the various portals. Many of these portals were created by the mage Lord Odran, though many of the known portals are now inaccessible due to the Elder Dragons.
Currently, the only known accessible portal is located in Lion's Arch, which is said to have been opened by Balthazar shortly after Zhaitan's awakening.
Before there were humans or dwarves, before there were even worlds or the stars that light the night sky, there was but one thing in the universe—the Mists. The Mists touch all things. They are what binds the universe together, past, present, and future. They are the source of all good and evil, of all matter and knowledge. It is said that all forms of life, no matter how simple or complex, can trace their origins back to this one place.
The Mists is the realm of the afterlife and the proto-reality that exists between the worlds which in turn are the building blocks of reality. They are the home to various gods and other powerful entities and the residences of various afterlives. The Mists resonate from the worlds around them, forming bits of their own reality — islands of existence that reflect the histories of their worlds.1 In the center of the Mists lies the Rift and, within that, the Hall of Heroes. The various Realms of the Gods are also located here.
Demons and other beings, such as Razah, are created from the Mists themselves."
Because there are several different worlds (servers) and different maps taking place in different timeframes. The battle of khylo, for example, is a thing of the past. The Mists make it possible to relive all sorts of encounters in the history of both games, which give the designers immense flexibility and creativity for new content.
WvWvW could only take place in the Mists, nowhere else, because each world(server) spins its own story.
It's actually v complimentary to multiple servers and above, back to basics: Allows any possible scenario/background to be permissable to the 1st Axiom:
3 Factions, RT-map objectives using it's own set of servers to improve performance for 00v00v00 & rotating server match-ups.
The rest is academic but potentially atmospheric-building too. Would be neat if the server that fell to the bottom of the ladder was terminated: A price of failure, Mr. Bond!
I still really can't extract out a why (we go into some sort of planar crossroads to fight against paralell worlds) from that.
I would assume there's something there? An energy-magic source that can only empower one world at a time or something perhaps?
As you prob know the winning server of the WvWvW fight get's a world wide buff of some sort (not known what it is afaik). My guess is that they implemented this in the lore somehow. As some form of power.
But then again it could be easier. We simply go there to defend our homes. Isn't that why we build keeps etc. To make a stronghold in the mists and keep it

The why is quite simple: For gameplay reasons. Any lore that will be created surrounding PvP will always just be there to support the gameplay, not the other way around.
I really do not understand this resistance towards the idea of Mists.
Why does every new idea, no matter how briliant it si, first has to be met with confusion and hatred?
And it's not even such a new idea, jeez...
The other-dimensional invaders or "dopplegangers" or what have you are as old as mythology ffs... Pretty much every sci-fi IP or traditional mythology has such creatures, jeez...
They are our "evil twins" from the "other side." Now are you happy guys? It makes absolutely perfect sense to me.
And newslash: people don't really kill each other because they "wear different hats" - they kill each other for territory and resources. "Funny hats" are just an excuse which can be used for having friendly relations, as well. So, we don't need "funny hats" ok? They are evil and they want to take our lands which are ours by right (the MIsts) and the fact that they look exactly like us make them even more scary and disgusting. Have you seen "invasion of the body snatchers?" Hmm? "I've seen the enemy and he is us."
The mists are a source of power. In GW1 you would go in the mists to hold the hall of heroes, granting the "Favor of the gods" which unlocked the elite instances for your world and you got loots too (like the guild sigil), as well as your team name being displayed in the whole game. Doesn't work like that since there is only one world now in GW1.
As for GW2, the world having the advantage in WvW unlocks boni for its players (even in the pve part, IIRC). So why ? To get more powerful.

it occurs in The Mists
as most (if not all) PvP in GW1 happen in the Mists

The Mists serve as a battleground in World PvP."

Thanks that solves the how, not so sure about the why though.

Super-heroes do it all the time!
That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!
I know i'll be in the Mists to kill players. The fact that they're there, is enough of a reason for me. I don't need a lore reason to PvP.
