Actually certain areas of the continent were instanced in my heavily populated server. The situation was not as bad as the starter island with 10-15 channels, but the basilisk area had easily 3 just before the servers went down and at least 5-6 during the previous day.
But don't take my word for it. Here's a screenshot of me playing in the basilisk area, in Channel 2:
There is nothing wrong with instanced areas during the launch month of the game, imo. I much rather prefer that approach than to artificially keep the server cap low and thus potentially doom the server with medium population or lower once the first/ third month is over.
I no longer care if a game LOOKS amazing, i only care if it IS amazing.
Having good graphics is on the very last check box of my criteria of a good MMO.
For me it's on top of the design, simply because it's the easiest aspect to get it right. If you can't get right the art, graphics design and music, aka what is presented to your senses, it's a lot harder to get immerced in the game.
It's a lot harder to have a story that matters to the players.
It's a lot harder to have balance between your classes or abilities.
It's a lot harder to make the combat interesting or the progression interesting.
And so on.
Graphics not so much. If a AAA company can't get the graphics right in 2012, I can guarantee you the production was sloppy and the game was rushed. Point in case, the latest example being SW:TOR.
Thing is, none of the stuff mentioned is really what matter to keep a game from ending in failure. Doesn't matter if the graphics are great, or even if the combat is good, if the game is boring and the game has nothing decent to do at max level then people wont stick around.
I'm fine with channels and don't consider it instancing in the traditional sense. I know on the technical side it's the same mechanic but being able to walk from one end of a continent to the other without a loading screen is not "instanced".
I will agree though that for launch I hope they raise the soft cap on channel generation. They have to balance this with performance concerns. People have touted how smooth and optimized TERA is even on older rigs and this wod suffer albeit for a good cause.
Instancing is a very smart idea especially at the launch, with 1000 people the same level on every server things would get awful. The multiple channels will spread things out and keep mobs available.
Nevermind you can chat between all the channels, it really makes no difference to me.
Besides that, there is no instancing on the second, much larger, continent.
It is on par with many nicer games, like Vanguard, EQ2, AoC, Rift , Aion. in some cases a little better, in some - worse.
It is nothing groundbreaking, well, at least not for mmo vets.
Some NPCs look sooo ugly and weird though... like at the beginning of this video.
Lol, nice joke, all those games you listed aren't even close, even Rift looks like crap compared to Tera.
IMO Tera is the second best looking MMO ever made, 1st is FFXIV.
Vanguard, EQ2, Rift, LOL next time play the game before talking about it's graphics.
"Esport with tournaments is for hardcore pvp'rs that want to be competitive. Openworld PVP with ganking and griefing is for casuals that just wants their pvp mixed with pve from time to time." otacu
Yeah, I would say that the artstyle for Tera is as high and sometimes higher fantasy than Aion which is saying a lot. I personally like it but for some it's probably a turn off.
Actually playing in the world reminded me of Vanguard mixed with Aion but more "alive" and colorful.

What graphics card are you running and what settings are you running Tera in?
I using a GTX 560 ti and even forced AA X8 and I never saw these amazing graphics, they are ok, as good as any other of the DX 9 games listed, but not as good as Aion's or FFXIV.
Im just not getting it, I mean yea there is detail, but the color palette and the skinning are just off. Is kinda nice that Tera doesnt mind if we reskin the game ourselves though : )

He was playing in the US with the mid quality textures. Here are the few screenshots from the EU client. I remembered to grab the last day of the sneak peek event:

Lol, what? Tera has much better graphics than Aion and FFXIV. The only good graphics about Aion are the player models.

Yep, played on EU server. Its no Witcher 2, but it blows any other MMO out of the water for graphics. Some might not like the graphics anime style, but people saying the graphics are bad is just ignorance.

I actually like vanguard's graphics better - it is less shiny and more realistic, also the world is more open.
Tera is very detailed, very corourful in places, but it's just too much for me. What i really liked in tera is the fir trees in some areas.
And Aion is really A LOT like Tera.
But i guess good graphics = lots of flashy shiny stuff for you.
I don't think were talking how visually appealing they are to our taste, we're talking about how technically and artisically detailed the graphics are. We have to be realistic here, on technical terms Vanguards graphics are not as impressive as TERAs.
You're also being somewhat ignorant, yes some places in TERA are bright and flashy but the size and variability in this game surpases almost anything i've ever played. Plenty of good places for almost everyones tastes guaranteed as you level up.

Vanguard and EQ2 have possibly the worst art style in MMOs. I'd rather say AoC if you want something that looks good and realistic but the world is not very open.

I agree, Artistically, Tera is impressive. Combat is epic. Story.. is lacking big time. If only it had good story and a unique way of approaching storytelling, would be next to prefection for me. Just like any mmo where I have to read a wall of dialogue just doesn't appeal to me. That's why I liked Swtor, but that was it.

and now the instancing issue just like a certain other game. :it's starter area only!!!"
What other game? And there is a difference between instances and zones and of course lobby game design.

The way mmo's were: Community, Exploration, Character Development, Conquest.
The way mmo's are now : Cut-Scenes,Cut-Scenes, solo Questing, Cut-Scenes...

Instancing wouldnt really be an issue except that it randomly assigns each player even if they are grouped.
I agree on this little detail, although from my experience switching happens pretty fast.

It is pretty but the CBT1 is why I canceled my pre-order and won't look at this game again.
