Star Wars: The Old Republic: Drew Karpyshyn Leaving Industry

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Bioware writer Drew Karpyshyn is leaving Bioware and the games industry in order to focus on his writing exclusively. Karpyshyn has worked with Bioware for the past twelve years writing for both Star Wars: The Old Republic and the Mass Effect series.

Currently, Karpyshyn has another Old Republic novel in the works and is working on his own fantasy series tentatively called Children of Fire.

During my time at BioWare I worked on a number of beloved and award winning titles. I'm proud of everything we accomplished, and I know going forward that BioWare will continue to live up to its well deserved reputation for making the best story driven games in the industry. The story and dialogue in any BioWare game is the result of an entire team of writers working together, and I often felt I received an excessive amount of the credit for the games we created.

I have no idea what has this got anything to do with the game itself? i think you are just trying hard to make connections here.

Yes, volumes. Read the guy's blog. He retired. People do it all the time. He even states he's looking forward to playing more golf.

Yes, I retired too, ironically because of 'differences" at work.

Would love to see your source of info..you seem to know a lot about internal working of Bioware.

What it speaks to is that he has spent an incredible amount of time writing for video games, for bioware and wants to move on and actually do his own work. Work that has great meaning to him.

Probably a lot of late hours, working hard on creating something that doesn't allow him to reach his full potential as an artist.

    I say good for him.

Connection as in he quit because of SWTOR and somehow it speaks volumes about the game? a very vague statement so yeah i don't see the connection here.

What does it tell us he quite because SWTOR sucks?

Projection. You retired because of "differences" so he must have too?

For the record, I have my exit strategy planned from my career as well. There are a ton of different reasons to leave a company, even when things are good.

Ninja edit: I'll be 41 when I "retire" as well.

Quote from his blog: "I’m leaving to focus more time and energy on my novels and other non-video game related projects. But even though I’ll no longer be working on games for BioWare, I’m not going to be severing all ties with them. Many of my closest friends still work at the company, and I’m also in the process of writing the next Star Wars: The Old Republic novel, though I can’t say too much about it yet."

This is not doom and gloom but apparently it has been 3.639 hours.

    He planned it all along.

Maybe he did maybe he didn't unless he called you up to tell you the exact reason which i really doubt.

    Arguement from ignorance.

Your assuming that a claim is false simply because it has not been proven true or cannot be proven true (at this time).

See we can play this game all day long

  • BunksBunks Member Posts: 960

Sounds more like budget trimming to me.

I said a few ago that EA has major liquidty issues now that SWTOR wont be the cash cow they thought it would be. So yeah, brace yourself, the layoff train has only started to move. We'll know for sure a few weeks before the end of march earning report.

The guy has been writing video games for 12 years and feels he's ready  to write books full time - probably the dream of everyone who gets paid to write any kind of fiction anywhere - and you interpret that as he's been fired because SWTOR is failing?

I worry about what goes on in some people's heads.
