I on the other hand dislike fights that last less than 5 secs. If I wanted to play an FPS headshotting people, I'd do just that. When an MMO has the attitude of "whoever attacks first wins", then the combat is not very interesting.
That's not exactly the only alternative to several minute fights.
It shouldn't be about head-shotting people - but about fast reactions and appropriate usage of skills, regardless of who attacked who. Though, naturally, successfully pulling off an ambush SHOULD give you a tactical advantage.
Personally, I think ~30-60 second fights are ideal.
Both classes have the skills necessary to outsmart their opponent, they just didnt take advantage of them.
I.E. the mesmer never switched weapons, nor used a mantra. He exclusively used 3 skills on the greatsword the whole fight.
You can have the most skill based combat in the world, it doesnt show if the people fighting arent at all skilled :P
Sure, but until the game is actually out - or we get a more meaty representation of PvP - I can only speak to what the video is showing me.
If skillful play means fights will be over quickly - then I'm happy.
It's just not what the video is showing.
Also, with such a limited arsenal available pr. weapon setup - it's hard to avoid using the same skills over and over. I hope they don't intend weapon switching to be a vital part of PvP - because that seems rather awkward.
I can pretty much guarantee that weapon swapping will be vital. The thing about being good at PvP is adapting to the situation at hand and using all tools available to you in order to win, making seamless weapon swaps a must. I suppose at maybe the lower echelons of PvP competition or against bads you may be able to get away with not swapping, but I can assure you that against good PvPers you'll be fucking yourself if you don't.
Mesmer was probably a WoW player, and hasn't wrapped his head around the new gameplay.

Yeah, i'm thinking alot of us are gonna have an adjustment period. But those of us that are good, will adapt to this system...and smart use of weapon swaps will play a vital part in that.

Was that supposed to be an insult towards WoW players? How silly. You could replace that with any game and make it sound like an insult. The WoW players I know adapt and maximize pvp techniques, so its kind of childish when I see someone try to use the idea of playing WoW (one of the top mmorpgs of all time) as an insult, connoting the inability to pvp well.
everything else in the game is just meh, i mean, nothing new and is just an improved version of warhammer public quest and rift dynamic events. *snip* and maybe because is really looks like a improved copy of warhammer, but thats all.
Except that it is not just an improved copy of Warhammer.
If you think that, you need to do a LOT more research on GW2.
There are like 10 skills to use? Maybe that's just because they are low level, so I hope that changes. Compared to some of the asian mmo's on the horison this game looks dated.
I loved the original guild wars... This game looks awesome aswell...
The sad thing is, after playing a game like Darkfall Online, that took player skill in PvP, (FPS/twitch combat) this just looks sooo repetitive to me It kills me to say that, because I'd been waiting for Gw2 since I bought GW!
While i agree the point and click play is a bit tedious now, it's just the same as most other mmorpgs, Darkfall's pvp was no more skillful, it was twitch for sure, but please don't consider that alone means it requires more skill...it really doesn't.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
Sometimes I have trouble with colors, so let me just see if other people had the same impression.
Was the player's team dressed in red with blue names and was the other team dressed in blue with red names? There was one time early when he goes to capture a node http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=r0WX4Cc7TFs#t=103s and I'm watching it in full screen, so I see the other two people come up and see the color of their names and think "oh man, you're in deep shit" and it took me a second to realize they were all teammates.
Did anyone else have that reaction?

LOL, yeah that was my reaction too last night. I was oh man he is scr...oh wait.

It's just getting used to it believe me.
When i started playing team fortress 2 back in 2007 or something I was confused many times because I would be auto switched after playing 30min as blue, that I just tried to attack blues the first few times, and downright ignore red colored enemies.
Its basically the same principle here, but u are used to seeing red enemy bars/names and seeing the red outfit tells u the wrong message until ur brain adapts to it

It's not that the team has a particular color, it's that the names and uniforms appear to be the complete opposite of what I'd expect (red shirt/blue name and blue shirt/red name instead of the more intuitive red shirt/red name and blue shirt/blue name).
I was actually going to suggest that they should use something akin to phasing to make every team see itself as blue and the opponents as red (like what League of Legends does with nameplates) but I imagine that would be extremely confusing to spectators if they were watching footage from each different side at the same time, lol.
edit: One thing Modern Warfare 2 did which I thought was interesting was that for the most part they only showed a name if it was a teammate. Granted, those were actual military uniforms so it was easy to tell on sight that way as well, but I thought it was very helpful, if you saw a name then it was a friendly. Though i say "for the most part" because sometimes they would show an enemy name and it would almost always result in my death. I was so conditioned to not shoot the other 99% of the time.

That video was kinda cool but I would not call it impressive as its not really something that I have not seen before. I will say that Guild Wars 2 looks 100 times better then Star Wars. I think I did about 30 minutes of Star Wars beta before I uninstalled.

Research before posting = less foot in mouth
Thank god!
And please, stay there, but thanks for stopping by and telling us you wont be playing......
