AA seems like it will be pretty good, but I wouldn't call it the ultimate sandbox, because there is no way to shape the world s you see fit. You can place houses and trees, but you can't actually modify the terrain to make your own caves, mountains, land forms, etc.
I have been reading and watching whatever I can about This game since I first heard about it, and IMO the graphics are pretty good. I dont really need to be blown out of my seat in the graphics dept. Its more about options and gameplay. This games, from what I have learned so far, really offers a great deal of awesome stuff and I honestly can't wait to play.( especially the Naval fighting/sailing with other players) That being said I do see the point where people have given up on sandboxes. Almost every one of them tells us we are gonna have cool option 1, 2, and 3. Then after beta and launch we get 1 poorly implemented. 2 that is extremely shallow and nothing of what people expected..... and "hey whatever happened to 3?". In theory I LOVE sandboxes, So that is why I , like many others, hope for THAT game to finally come out. (and maybe not be swarmed with D-bags) So I am hoping on AA delivering. Maybe this Korean Company can deliver, so lets stay patient and open minded and give it a fair chance.( I know I'm on MMORPG.com so for some of us Im asking a lot but lets try )
the fact you can 'create' your own 'template' etc, is neat, but we've seen this kind of thing with Rift already, otherwise it looks pretty much like a regular themepark game, levels etc, not sure where the sandbox elements come in tbh. maybe once the game releases we'll see some indication of 'sandpark' but for me, it really just looks like another regular themepark game, not a bad thing in itself really, and it does look like it has possibilities.
Probaly coz you only seen the "themepark" section of the game, thing is, theres a big open ended themepark section, the basic stuff were you do quest but in a less linair way then most themeparks as you can just travel around and do them wereever you like, tho its recoment to do lvl 1-20 in the direction sugested since you get all the basic stuff from it, a small house,a glider, a mount, the basic game into about fighting and farming (farming as in trees, pigs, sheep, flowers)
the sandbox element is that even in the pve part of the game you can build your house, do youre stuff how you like it. or you can move on to the "sandbox" lands of the game and build a castle of youre own design,a villiage, claim the land, do pvp, build a ship a raid coastal settlements.
Archeage is far closer to the old SWG design then to the WoW design and asfar gameplay elements/mechanics it already seems to offer far more ways to play the game then anygame that came before it.
/shrug, as always its a wait and see thing .. aint like they going to release in US/EU anytime soon anyway.
if there isnt an EU release for the game, then seems a bit pointless tbh, if that ever changes maybe it will be worth looking into.. but until then
At least the original poster threw in the caveat that it is only "possibly" the ultimate whatever. Kind of like how every NFL undrafted free agent who gets invited to some team's training camp is possibly a future hall of famer. But probably not.
Also, different sandbox fans want different things in a game. Just like different theme park fans want different things in a game.
OP, we have just had the SWTOR hype fiasco and GW2 possibly heading into mass overhype territory, let's not screw Archeagewith hype, it looks promising but lets see how it plays.

Player hype doesn't affect a game's development in the least. I don't see how we could "screw" AA by over hyping.
If anything we're helping the game find a western publisher faster.

If someone expects $10 and they get $10 they are happy, if everyone tells them they are going to get $20'and they get $10 then they are unhappy.

I think it is a cert for a western release, the whole game was written with the western market in mind. The development house will have done most of the legwork, they are just concentrating on their Korean release.

I have played so many crappy games coming out of the Asian market that I can't get excited about anything coming out of there. Nice that it is a "sandbox" but we'll see what it looks like on delivery.
Things that would be a turn off to me: typical crappy "F2P" scam pricing model (this would be especially bad for a sandbox game), typical super asian grindfest gameplay, non-combat play getting the usual sub-par treatment, crappy crafting.
In the end, I can't listen to or care about hype for any game pre-release anymore, there have just been too many letdowns.
AA has some sandbox elements but its clearly a themepark because of the linear based quest grind.
Not to mention it wont ever release in the West.
Plus its Asian and will turn alot of people off from the start.
The game looks average at best.
Lineaer QUest Grind? This will not be a game where you have to follow a quest path from A-Z. Average at best? You clearly are in love with themparks like GW 2.

Sorry to burst your bubble But to be blunt your wrong.
The only people that are turned off by "Asian" develpers are the WoW kiddies. A true MMO vet does not care who makes a game. What matters is whats in the game.
The game doesnt have state of the art graphics because the game is offering so much to do thats absolutly mind boggling. Even with that said its graphics are better than GW2, swtor without a doubt. It wont be better than TSW because its using the same engine as AOC which I still think is absolutly a beautiful game. But in the end its funcom and the game will be horrible. Graphics doesnt make an MMO. Gameplay and content do. You want shinny graphics stick to single player games.
Its linear for the first 10 levels which is basically a tutorial.
They have already stated multiple times it will release in the west.
EDIT: Oh and btw to answer your sig, there already was a masterpeice of a PvE sandbox game. It is FFXI. But its an Asian developed game so you missed the train a long time ago. Maybe open your narrow mind up some, and be open to try different things from different cultures.

Agree.
People who dislike things because they are different are generally speaking the minority.
Asian themed games do quite well, there is a huge push for Anime in the US and its become quite the modern art forum. If the success of the final fantasy series or any Enix game prior to them joining Square, or perhaps the plethora of fighting games that have asian characters that are beloved amongst the American population (DoA anyone) Americans love Asian themed things.
Finally, this is possibly the ultimate sandbox mmorpg to ever lived amazing game. its what all the sandbox players wanted. ground battle, sieges, your own castle, house, naval battles, and epic monsters such as the kraken is in game. the features in this game is mind boggling, This game is better then darkfall, and mortal online for sure.
Its not a sandbox mmo,its themepark with some features that you would find in a sandbox game.Ill use a term that someone used on these forums, its a themebox mmo.

I seriously wonder what game you'd consider more sandbox besides the obvious EVE/UO/SWG. AA has more sandbox features than most other MMO's called sandbox MMO's, the fact that it happens to have quests in it doesn't really change that.

based off what?
The fact that the begining has a guided tutorial?
That a themepark does not make.
It is a sandbox, to say otherwise is to reveal your ignorance.
Endgame raiding? No (themepark feature)
Endgame open world buliding? Yes (Sandbox feature)
Skills you level, classless? yes sandbox feature
Housing you build, gardening? yes Sandbox feature
A lot of horizontal content that isn't progressive? Yes Sandbox feature
Sandbox is just a term people use which means choice, not guiding all players into one direction. Want to join a pirate or an anti-pirate guild? Work towards building castles and claiming territory? Want to make a living by becoming a craftsman or farmer? All real possibilities. Just because the game has quests and levels doesn't make it a themepark, some 'sandbox' MMOs had skills to level up for you to be any good which is just another way of doing it.
To me this game has no themepark elements. But then again I have my own definition of a themepark.
To me a themepark is a game that will hold your hand, and lead you on a nice little yellow brick road from zone to zone, until you reach a structured end game raiding system t1,t2,t3 etc. RIFT, SWTOR are perfect examples. I hate that most people refer to PvE as thempark. IMO a game like FFXI is in no way a themepark game, You go and do what you want to do and where you want to do it. Its end-game isnt structered into teirs. I would love nothing more than to see AA have some raiding content like XI had, to complement its PvP end game features.
Just think of how epic a world boss fight could be. Guild vs Guild vs World Boss that fight could go on for days, guilds fighting each other while the boss whacks away at everyone. Thats what I would call an epic fight. Add a whole new dimention to the boring over done instanced raiding.

I wish leveling wasn't strictly a quest grinder. However, you do get xp for labor, so that is at least an alternative source of leveling, although not completely viable on it's own. I also am not crazy about the 2 factions, I say this knowing it is intended for players to break off and eventually form their own factions. Has this been tested in beta yet? I haven't heard much about it. I'm hoping they make open world sieges bigger. I believe it's 100v100 atm. I almost wish they'd not put a limit on sieges, even though I understand the need. Maybe select an option for more player participants - 50v50, 100v100, 250v250, 500v500. I'd also like more open world dungeons. I know there are some in game, but apparently they lack bosses and incentive. All in all this is the one game I want to play above all others. It hurts my heart us westerns will have to wait so long.

There is definitely some raiding type content already with things like the Kraken, and the Rift-like invasion event, maybe also the Pirate Captain. Also they mention a Raid boss on the 3rd continent that drops an item needed to start a Siege, and then the Sieges themselves.
They could likely add more with a few World bosses of sufficient size and complexity. As well who knows what if anything they intend for Dungeon bosses, should they even have them.

its hybrid, i think the first 10 levels is quest after that your put into real sandbox style.
This game got it all from owning lands, craft houses, craft your own castle, epic guidl vs guild to guild vs epic monsters.
this games got it all. crafting is awesome too sandboxy crafting.

Of course it's a sandbox..what does archeage not have that other sandboxes have to not make it a sandbox?
A better question is what elements make it a themepark?
Because I don't see any other than the tutorial questing you do to explain how to play the game and how to interact with the world...
