Which game can be considered "classless"?

dimasokdimasok Member UncommonPosts: 183

We know GW2 doesn't really have any traditional separation into "tanks", "dps" or healers and its not really about levelling up and grinding and more about simply enjoying the game whatever level you are so epic things happen from the very outset.

We also know that The Secret World also doesnt have any levels but merely professions and eventually all skills can be acquired and used but which game would you say is leading the pack in terms of being considered truly "leveless?"

Now I am aware that Secret World is probably same as WOW, RIFT, SWTOR in terms of the overall gameplay and genre staples (except the lack of levels) and GW2 is much more innovative, but im still curious which one you consider more devoid of levels?

EvE, Asherons Call are the only 2 that I have played that I can comment on. Pretty much skill base determines everything.

I could name a few mmos released in the past years that have very little class, but I don't think that is quite what you're looking for.

I was writing a big wall of text to explain the diferences between GW2 & TSW... then, I noticed you said "the secret society", not the secret world... since the OP does not even know the name of the game, I don't know how to start.

looks like you like GW2, but just heard about TSW yesterday...

I'm just going to leave 2 links here and leave...

So you didnt write the post because I got the last part of the name wrong? And instead you gave me links to "all-over-the-place" discussion? Gee, thanks.

    DF has no classes.

however this does tend to make everyone use the exact same gear, exact same spells, exact same weappons, etc, etc......it's just what happens in a classless game.

wile there are no "levels" per se in DF, you do have to grind up skill levels and stats. still, there is nothing you can't be part of from the get go. mind you you'll probably die very quickly.

I'm confused.  The thread topic is about a game being "classless" but the actual post is about a game being "leveless".

So yeah... a bit confused here.  Started out about classes, then moved to levels, then back to classes and finished about levels.

I'm going to buy both games, but only one of then is advertised by their devs as leveless and classless.

you got the last part of the name wrong.... two times, and not only that I don't really know what you are talking about, leveless or classless?

I only put effort on my posts when the OP puts in his. If you make your thoughts more clear, it would help a lot.

I think Ryzom would apply here.  It has no real classes, but you do benefit from picking one role at a time.  You can level up as many skills as you would like.

Edit:  Just noticed the OP changed it to "levelless".  Technically, no MMO lacks levels because they all have to put in some form of progression.  Even if it isn't an experience bar, you still have to progress on a (sometimes vague) path.  If you want a game where you don't progress, play something like Counter-Strike.  I would suggest a newer FPS game, but even those have some form of progression.

I think both links provide good information on the classless/combat aspect of TSW atleast, if you are interested. Good forbid people doing research on their own.

    Classless is a difficult concept!

Ultima Online and Mortal Online let you pick your skills, but you only can spend a X amount of skillpoints. Your skills become more powerfull by every time you use them.

Eve Online lets you train skills. After a X amount of time you have learned a certain skill. You need skills to fly a certain type of spaceship and you need a certain skill to use a certain weapon. Other skills will boost some skills you have learned and other skills allow you to harvest minerals, craft weapons.

Darkfall Online allows you to learn all skills. However I consider that as a hidden class. To be best, you will need all skills, because sooner or later you will run into someone who has all skills and knows how to use them. Also you improve your skills by using them.

The Secret World allows you to pick a limited number skills. You can pick every skill you want and change these skills whenever you want. (Sorry I have no idea if your skills improve when you use them)

GW2 have classes, just not typical tank-healer or DPS.

Darkfall you can train all skills but many use for most part magic.

As i remember in my early days in Asheron's call back in 99-2000 most used magic.

The Secret World dont have classes just skills you can use limited few at a time.

Saga of Ryzom don't have classes also.

Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!

Ships are equipment in EVE, like armor that has slots for enchantments ect.  Classes are something EVE does not have.

Not really you can Fit sneaky shit to surprise people.. Use something that people think Okey this is what Im going to expect and suddenly that Dominix has 6 Heavy Neuts, and repper drones instead of guns and attack drones..

Many ships can be fitted in diffrent ways so saying EvEs classes are its ship is not correct...

  • Timeout77Timeout77 Member Posts: 177

A more accurate way of putting EvE is.. the more Skill points you have (in diffrent things) the more options it gives you to fit your ships diffrently.

EvE has no classes, and yes it has ships that do diffrent things but there is nothing stopping you from using them diffrently. Some ships are better at jaming others are better at DPSing others are better at suport rolls. But breaking the pattern, putting other types of things on ships can be very effective. EvE has so many types of ship/gear combinations that people always come up with diffrent ways of doing things..

Modules are the equipment. Mods are the thing that customizes classes. For example logistics ship is a healer class. Interdictors is a crowd control class and both are poor at doing each others jobs. Just like a warrior would be a bad healer and healer would be a bad tank.

Eve's PvE has tanks, DPS and healers. In missions, complexes and anomalies, you can tank with one ship do the damage with another. If one ship can't tank all the damage, bring a healer in. There is no need for a tank class in incursions or worm holes (because of improved AI) so people bring DPS and healers. PvP has no need for tank class aside from bait but like in most other games there's a role for crowd control. These are tacklers and EWAR.

Some classes are more versatile than others (strategic cruisers), but Eve's ships play a lot like classes of most regular MMOs.

Except since you're not locked into a particular ship type (or ship class) it doesn't count at all as a class based system.
