I've thought about this in depth, and i can honestly say i just dunno if i can play two games at once due to the fact that GW2 honestly has so much to do that i doubt i will ever login to another game while playing it. maybe after a years time when all my toons are max all my professions max but certainly not before that. I might login to wow to say hi to friends and tell them how fantastic the game is but i wouldn't login to play. So if you are like me and you like experiencing everything a game like GW2 has to offer then why would you login to another game at all?
Well, I won't. I'll be playing GW2 exclusively, but then...everyone's different. And for those players that do want that, I feel GW2 will do an excellent job of accomodating such a thing. I think hardcore and casual players alike will be able to find plenty to do in GW2.

phew, was thinking I was the only one feeling a bit overwhelmed by it all. Kept saying to myself, WvW, exploring, match play, DE's, got to see it all....not enough time, not enough time. Damn cities are going to eat up a few days alone.
For me, from what I can see in the videos and press, things I'd like to see in WoW (that are seen in the GW2 pre-beta buzz):
1.) dynamic zones
2.) organic questing
3.) active combat with things like active dodging, rolling, etc.
4.) targetless healing
5.) interactive skills (shooting arrows through another player's fire = fire arrows, for example)
6.) more emphasis on 5man dungeons as "tests of skill"
7.) more open world "events"
8.) a focus on the "world" instead of instances
9.) large scale "AV style" pvp
10.) less focus on "endgame" gear grinds.
11.) competitive obtective based pvp (instead of arena deathmatches).
12.) organic objectives in large scale pvp (build/defend that siege weapon) instead of carrying flags and huttballs.
13.) more compelling animations where what happens on the screen matters more than having a NASA styled UI
14.) Dropping the holy trinity is probably not viable in WoW, but I like how the way GW2 did it in that it seems to make gameplay look more dynamic (no more just stand in place and press a memorized button sequence).
15.) Not having "raids" as the premier content. I have nothing against raids per se, but raiding has essentially snuffed out the oxygen from the rest of the wow pve game.
16.) multi-tapping of resource nodes... no more ninjaing
17.) shared interests in pve... no more kill steals.
18.) organic encouragment to play together... hopefully no more artificial measures like LFD, LFR
COLD CHANCE IN HELL
This will never never never never never never happen in WoW. Guild Wars 2 will compete with WoW, RIFT, TOR and every other mmo because ArenaNET is labeling it a mmorpg. They are not allowed to half ass the game because it is Buy to play.
If ArenaNET is allowed to put out a piss poor product and then blame buy to play then every Guild Wars fan better admit that payment is flawed and is crap. Once you label this a mmorpg and do absolutely nothing to stop the hype you better believe I will hold ArenaNET as accountable as I held Bioware.
When you have the balls to call out every single mmorpg on the market right now and call them out dated and based on old concepts you better not try a cop out excuse that the game is buy to play, so it does not have to compete. If they do that would be the biggest bullshit in mmo history and I hope someone sue's their asses for fraudulent advertising then.
TL'DR: They do not get a free pass.
Where in that quoted post was anything about a 'free pass'? If GW2 turned out to be bad (which it won't), of course Anet would be held acountable for producing a subpar product.
Too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Nothing wrong with playing other games, a little break now and again may give you a better appreciation for GW2. Keeps you from burning out. That's why GW2 is going to be a massive hit, because people can come and go as they please without the subscription anchor holding them back.
Where in that quoted post was anything about a 'free pass'? If GW2 turned out to be bad (which it won't), of course Anet would be held acountable for producing a subpar product.
I want GW2 fans to have me on record that come 4 months from now you know where I stand when the excuses start. Everybody is going to ride ArenaNETs nuts even if their are EXTREMELY blatant and clear flaws in the game and it needs to be delayed and convince them to release it.
They did the same crap in TOR. This crap about instances being bugged, ability delays, and exploits maybe had one or two official threads, but when you talked to people everyone knew it was happening. They need to be held accountable and no guild wars 2 fan better sit on the excuse of B2P.
This is my opinion, I don't expect everyone to agree...but it is an opinion grounded in logic.
First off, the payment model. GW2 is buy-to-play, in other words...you purchase the box, and you can play it immediately and not worry about a monthly sub. WoW, on the otherhand, is pay-to-play. You have to buy the box and then pay a monthly subscription fee in order to play. I am not here to bash WoW or any other game, simply stating the facts. With the payment model GW2 is using, gamers can still play WoW (or any other sub based game), while playing GW2 and not feel any sense of financial obligation to play one or the other.
Second, and perhaps most importantly; GW2 is doing things quite a bit differently from what has been called, 'the WoW model'. When an MMO attempts to copy the WoW model the developer puts itself in a position of having to compete with WoW. No other developer up to this point has been able to employ the WoW model as well as Blizzard. Games that use that model are inevitably held up to the standard, which of course is WoW. So...for a game using the WoW model to be highly successful, it has to actually employ that model better than WoW does. Otherwise, those that are looking for that style of MMO are simply going to play the superior version. Which in many, many cases over the past several years has been WoW. This is why, in my opinion, you aren't going to beat Blizzard at their own game. This bring me to GW2. Because Anet is doing things so very differently from WoW, they are establishing their own place in the market. Gamers that want something different from WoW (which there are alot of) will likely flock to GW2 for those differences. They won't have to 'settle' for lack of options. In short, with the way Anet is developing GW2, it will be possible for WoW and GW2 to coexist without affecting eachothers playerbases.
What remains to be seen is how players respond to these differences. In my mind, that will determine what happens to WoW and whether or not GW2 takes from its playerbase.
TL;DR - GW2 is targetting a different playerbase.
This is a game, even futher more its in the same genre. Therefore it will compete with WoW and evey other MMORPG directly.
Did you actually read the post? Of course it will compete with other MMOs. The point was, because it isn't a WoW clone it is targetting a different playerbase of gamers. Of course there will be overlap, but the hardcore GW2 playerbase wants something very different from the hardcore WoW playerbase. Please read before you post.
All i needed (but I did read the rest of insuing wall of fecies.) to read was the title. In that title you say "Gw2 will not have to compete with WoW" which is 100% false. To be blunt your whole post is full of garbage except 1 key point the payment model but ultimatly the goal is money so really its irrelevant. Its competing for the same audience, the MMO player base. I would maybe be able to somewhat agree if GW2 was aiming for a "sandbox" gaming audience, but its not, its a themepark and in that regaurd its competing directly with WoW.
Ill read before I post when people think before they post illogical topics.

Thats the interesting question , and 1 i think most MMO's compagnies are fearing the answer to right now. Wich is btw what jeff strain talked about in 2007
Im not a wow fanboy infact I havent played WOW since the original beta which I only got to around 20.
GW2 andi ts PAY TO WIN yes PAY To WIN will not compete with wow. Now fanboys of GW bash me blah blah we all seen the updated FAQ saying the cash shop will not have anything you cannot get in game through the investment of time. Meaning anything and everything you can get IN GAME can be on the cash shop either now or in the future.
Oh btw I hope the game is great and even if its pay to win ill play it.

GW2 will definitely compete with WoW. Just like games like Skyrim or even Modern Warfare compete with WoW. To what degree it will compete with WoW, I'm not really sure.
I would think it would compete with WoW far more directly than single player games, but not as directly as a P2P "WoW-model" game like Rift or SWTOR.
Also, another side of this coin is to think that not only must GW2 compete with WoW, WoW must compete with GW2 .
GW2 is gettng tons of hype and rave impressions from those who play it, is widely regarded to revolutionalize several of WoW's aging gameplay systems, has better graphics than WoW, and most importantly is cheaper than WoW!
I'm not saying "GW2 is ze WoW killer" but honestly, I think it has the greatest chance to dethrone WoW of any MMORPGs released in the last 5 years. If I were Blizzard, I would be a bit concerned.

Read it a few times and you will realize the change means any item that is avialable in game can be on the cash shop.
Fanboys will deny the change as small and say it doesnt mean that but its pretty obvious they used the words "through the investment of time"for a reason people.
"Yes, micro-transactions will exist. Be assured goods and items bought for cash in GW2 do not offer any advantage over those available in the game through the investment of time."
To me this means 1 thing. The cash shop will not offer better items then what you can get in game but it will offer in game items that you can get from camping named or doing dungeons.
People are gong to play the game that is the most fun. If GW2 is more fun, people will cancel their subs. If they find both games equally as fun, they'll cancel their subs.

Yes, fanboys will deny what you say. Specifically fanboys of logic.
Look, you quoted the statement right? It says :
"Goods and items bought for cash in GW2 do not offer any advantage over those available int he game through investment of time."
This means that
IF item is in cash shop.
THEN
Either item or similar gameplay advantage is available by spending them in game.
What you are saying is:
IF item is achievable in game.
THEN
Item is available in cash shop.
This is NOT logically equivalent to the quote you provided. Sorry, but it's not. It would be like if I told you:
GW2 will not have to (and probably won't) compete with WoW. To be honest, WoW is already on it's way out, and has been slowly fading over the passed few years. People are losing interest in it, and are going to other games or quitting the genre alltogether.
I'm sure some people will disagree, but I think the time for games to 'compete with WoW' is basically over. WoW's still around, and will remain so for more years to come, but it's impact's been made, and Blizzard will cancel WoW / introduce their newest MMO before any game can seriously push WoW out of the market (which just won't happen).
Im not a wow fanboy infact I havent played WOW since the original beta which I only got to around 20.

And how is this pay to win? There is nothing wrong with this kind of system, heck there is nothing wrong with buying ingame currency or boosts either(aslong as they are xp boosts etc).
If some one can only spend 8-10 hours a week in a game but have enough disposable income to spend on his hoby there is nothing wrong with enabling them to compete with people that spend 30-40 hours or more a week in the same game. It's like LOL if i didnt had time to level up by farming unranked games but i could afford to buy boosts how exaclty does it makes me more powerfull than some one who just spent more time? Infact people that could spend more time in the game to level normaly mostlikly gained better skills and larger IP pool than some one who got XP boosts to catch up.
There is quite little info about the itemization in the game but stats seem to be a secondary factor especially in PVP, aslo since you need to level up weapon skills and it takes quite a while to unlock the high level skills and abilities even if you could buy the sword of 10000 noobs instead of doing a dungeon for it but you leveled up with a mace or an axe it will be useless.
From what i've seen atleast from the mid level dungeons there isnt that much "loot" in the game, the devs also stated that gear will be more about apperance and play style rathe than about theroycrafting and metagaming.
Stats will matter but since there is no PVP stats, and in many areas there is a stat normalization effect(ala bolster in ToR) i dont see a problem with the store selling any item aslong as you can get it in the game.
This is my opinion, I don't expect everyone to agree...but it is an opinion grounded in logic.
First off, the payment model. GW2 is buy-to-play, in other words...you purchase the box, and you can play it immediately and not worry about a monthly sub.
The expansions every 3 months is where they will get their money back.
Its not a sub but if you want to play new content with your friends and see and loot new things you will end up buying it for £25 - £30 for each expansion. So you think your not paying a sub but when you divide the expansion costs across 3 months you still are IF you want to continue playing beyond the game release.
I'm in no way knocking it, in fact I don't really care as long as the game is good. But, if your expecting updates/expansions a la WoW you will need to buy the expansions every 3 months, whch will work out the same as a sub.
(Item shop is another source or revenue, albeit, hopefully simply a cosmetic one).
Looking forward to trying it.
Chances maybe, the expansions may come at 6-month intervals, or so. Three months might be a bit too quick for some, but I wouldn't be entirely opposed to it either, if it were quality content.
Honestly alot of the new releases wont be competeing with eachother. TSW and GW2 wont actually be competeing. GW2's competition is Tera and Archage. TSW wont actually be competeing with all that much. the demographics are gonna be divided up evenly. the only competition that TSW and GW2 will compete in is the innovation catagory, which as much you want to argue it. TSW is changing alot more than GW2 is. TSW is also more of a thinking game where GW2 is a reaction game. so really GW2 wont be competing with all that much. im happy about this too, GW2 has some crazy followers. im afriad of what they will do to Tera and Archage.
Because i can. I'm Hopeful For Every Game, Until the Fan Boys Attack My Games. Then the Knives Come Out. Logic every gamers worst enemy.

Not trying to bash you, mate, I just think maybe your definition of 'pay-to-win' may be differnent than some of us. To me, pay-to-win is the act of buying cash shop items that will actually make your character more powerful, in some fashion, that you could not have attained otherwise or in-game. It takes these types of cash shop purchases (and lots of them) to attain the most powerful character possible. With GW2, you merely purchase the copy of the game (box) and you have purely-optional cash shop purchases of things like character slots and cosmetic/appearance items. If you buy these items, you don't get any sort of advantage over anyone else, except your character might look cooler, or whatnot. I think you'll be happy with the direction that GW2 takes, over what I (and a lot of others) consider a p2w game.

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
http://www.guildwars2guru.com/forum/gw2-cash-shop-info-changes-t27513.html
All men are humans.
And then you said,
Oh I see, all humans are men.
You can't do that.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
Very wordy, but correct.
