Roma Victor has been on MMORPG.com's game list for quite a while now, it is a historically accurate game based during the height of the ancient Roman Empire, and I feel it has gone very unnoticed. Roma Victor has many features, which I find very interesting, one being the massive NPC system which has many possibilites (such as having slaves that can sell things for you, almost completely controlable guards, etc.) Roma Victor also has an interesting combat system, where the combatants don't rely completely on combat skills or dice roll fighting, but HOW they fight, why is this? because the combatants control WHEN they hit and WHERE they hit, so stabbing someone in the neck may well kill them if their neck isn't protected from the stab. Roma Victor also is planned to be a no subscription game, the retail price is all that is required of you to pay for the game, meaning no monthly fees (although you can pay in exchange for in-game money called Sesterces).
As you may notice, Roma Victor doesn't look "pretty" graphics wise, "why is this?" you may ask, the answer is that the graphics options in all the screen shots are TURNED OFF (sadly, this gives a bad impression on the game's graphics) but I am a gamer that preffers gameplay over graphics (if I wasn't I wouldn't have played Might and Magic games for so many years). I feel that Roma Victor has great potential to attract a large amount of subscribers, mainly because of the fact that both PvP and PvE players can enjoy the game, but also because of the fact that a monthly subscription isn't required (attracting freebie players, or people that can't afford a monthly subscription) Although the game doesn't have magic, there are "cults" (religious "guilds" that worship certain gods for benefits from their diety) which may appeal to at least those that preffer cleric type characters.
I would like to know what others at MMORPG.com think about Roma Victor, why, and if they'd buy the game when it is released. Also, please read the features page before commenting (if you can't find it the link CLICK HERE )

Yea I heard about this game, it seemed pretty cool from what I saw. And a unique setting at that, Ancient Rome. I think I'm going to give it a try when/if it hits open beta, then maybe get it for release.
I like the No levelling treadmill / No camping talk. The stealing/thief feature sounds annoying.
It's certainly intriguing, and while I'm a bit more devoutly following Imperator right now, Roma Victor also appeals for a similar reason.
I might give it a once-over...

Its got my interest peaked. Sadly though with the way MMO's have been turning out. I'm hesitant to get myself too excited about one anymore.
In War - Victory.
In Peace - Vigilance.
In Death - Sacrifice.
yes, i agree interesting, let's just hope it doesn't fall into the habit of interesting MMORPGs recently, and end up getting scrapped last second. This game somewhat reminds me of Dragon Empires...
Also, I find it interesting the RV allows for the "hardcore" and "softcore" playing styles, where hard core players can become a legend in game, but as a trade off, have perma-death when they die, whereas us softcore players (well, those of us that are) don't have to become a legend, but can still be powerful (just not as powerful as a legend)
Ive been excited over this game for 2 years now, but it doesn't seem to want to come out.
so I gave up all hope.
imperatorian, even big games should take at least 2 years, unless they have a ginormus staff, and considering how this is a small company, it's bound to happen, fortunatly it's scheduled to come out about 2nd quarter of this year, if not then it'll be the 3rd quarter, but i doubt it'll take longer.
BTW I think the final testing phase (where they'll start admitting people without beta apps.) i beleive takes place on the first 2 weeks of may or something, might wanna check the site on that though...
I said I've been excited over it for 2 years, it was in development far longer. It was delayed for almost a year or something too. But I don't mind, after all, Rome wasn't built in a day.
no, rome certainly wasn't built in a day, but over many years, centuries, a mallenia! (ok, mabye not a mallenia....) and as all roman type games should try so hard to acheive, it takes years to program a good Roman game.
Also, if graphics are your thing, i'd like to point out that right now they aren't doing their graphics overhaul AND once again, the graphics settings are turned off in the pictures (not to mention these are still pictures, and aren't moving with the realistic life Speedtree gives the enviornment) although, I'm sorry to hear that people preffer glamour over gameplay (me being a gameplay person)
Yep pretty hyped for RV. Since i studied ancient greek and latin at school RV could really be interesting for me.
Also i like the way the devs and the community operate - very mature and not apologetic for making a complex game that probably won't appeal to the mass market.
Hoping the graphics will be good though - really adds to game immersion in my opinion.
High hopes for this one. I'm definitely going to test/buy.
I must admit when I saw the poll posted I didn't expect to see this many people being aware of RV. I only heard about RV a couple of months ago & I'm a real fan of the game already.
The devs seem to be really keyed into what the community wants & from what I read the community have actually had many of their requests/suggestions added to the game!
Not worried about the graphics as looks fine for in-game beta screen shots - the combat system looks absolutely awesome as does the level of crafting possibilities.
If you get the chance please read their latest update
RV State of the World
It will be great to see this game succeed as it's a real independent developer trying to do things right - the very best of luck to them......

I have heard about it a long time ago and I like its idea and theme!
But development is going very slow there...
Check out their news section...nice list of features they plan to implement!

Life is too short to play bad games.
what really amazes me is that for a small company/dev team, the game is really complex (the NPC system alone is extremely complex in its programming no doubt) and the community is much more mature than most other mmorpg communities, which means no annoying kids being...well...annoying.
Also, surprisingly, the devs actually got the community helping with the development (finding historically accurate textures, etc.) those of us in the RV are very exicted about the game
I like the setting, something historical as opposed to the constant fantasy settings being released in MMOG's currently.
I hate the idea of any gaming company selling items or in game coin directly. I am not opposed to players selling their extra coin and wares and a gaming company facilitating those sales by handling the in game trades and processing the credit card charges/credits for a fee or percentage, but all items and coin should be earned prior to being sold/traded.
If a gaming company sells items and/or in game currency directly, then they are simply creating it for that purpose just as a duper or hacker would. This would mean that the items and coin that other players earn in game has no value, and I am not talking about resale value, I am talking about meaningful value. There would be no sense of accomplishment or pride when earning anything. At least Ebayers have to earn the items and coin they are selling, and all in game items and coin being sold enter the game world realistically, not just created in a vacuum for sale.
I would never play a game where the gaming company sold items and/or coin directly.

on the contrary Jorev, selling in game money directly is to offset them from going broke (since they WILL NOT have a monthly fee) people could basically play the game for free (after commercial purchase) by living off of what they make from items, and the profits from services and items, the only time you'd feel no accomplishment is when you buy tons of money with earning it at all (at least, in game that is) this also allows part time players that are busy at work or something similar to rise to the "elite"side of the game, as far as money goes that is. Ulitmately active players will benefit more than the money buyers though, active players will be able to do more labour in game while assisting their NPCs in order to harvest more resources, active players could capture bandit/enemy NPCs for free to make them slaves, while a money buyer would have to pay alot of money (possibly a small fortune of in game money) for a slave or for hired work, etc.
I don't understand your response, perhaps you can clarify. Are you saying that the game developer will be selling in game coin FOR players. That is not what I read. It says the game developer will be selling in game coin directly.
I know why the game maker is going to sell in game coin directly, because they will make a fortune(if the game is successful of course). They will be cutting out the Ebayers and selling in game coin themselves.
My point, which I thought I explained accurately, was that the coin the game maker will be selling, is coin created out of thin air for that purpose. It won't be dropping from mobs or being earned in game.
This will make all effort to obtain items/coin in game, meaningless, and will be adding massive inflation, since the coin being sold is introduced artificially from outside the game world.
I don't want any part of such a bastardization. It's a concept based on greed by the game developer.

they are selling coin in game, made of "thin air" as you say, but hardly out of greed, monthly subscriptions are just as greedy though, and even more so as a matter of fact because you are REQUIRED to pay them in order to continue playing the game, paying for money isn't you can play the game for free pretty much, how much money you want to order, etc. is up to you.
even with buyable in game money active players will still reign supreme, being able to captures slaves rather than pay fortunes to buy them, be able to build their own houses, make their own armor and wepons, etc. What will the money buyers get? nothing but their money, they'll spend forutnes buying houses, wepons, slaves, etc. Active players wouldn't need to pay monthly fees as they could easily aid themselves in gaining a fortune.
BTW, the value of in game money changes as the amount in game goes up or down, I suspect that at the beggining of the game buying value of the currency would be its highest, later on in the game it'd be better just to go out and play the game for the money versus buying it. This would mean that eventually people would rarely or completely stop buying in game money, essentially saving them money versus if they were playing a subscription game, If anything, I think a subscription game will make more money in total than this game because of the fact that a subscription payment EVER MONTH is REQUIRES, versus optional for benefit (that of which is to pay for the server and keep the devs living) besides, most companies now make the games for money, not because they love the game they are making (hence all the crap games in the mmorpg market now) smaller companies and dev teams (such as the one making this game) do it because they truly love their project, their first project, and as everyone knows, the first project of most teams/companies is usually the best.
