The title pretty much says it all. In other games I was (DAOC) spear Spec hunter, in (WoW) The terribad lol "beastmaster melee" hunter and in (Warhammer) I was White Lion. As you can see all melee/hybrid pet class. So when looking at the site I see Damage/Control/Support as the types to play. So I chose control. Ranger already has lots of traps for control but I am wondering if any of you knew which weapon set went best for the control role. If you have any vids showing a ranger using weapon skills that 'control' would be definetly appreciated/welcome.
Thanks in advance

Why can't you just try it and judge for yourself instead of asking "What is best/strongest/easiest for X/Y/Z?" = "How to play?" before we even know the release date
not much CC in this game, so you may find controling anything a bit difficult. Traps are obvious, but other than a few knockbacks and cripple shot they don't much.
You may want to check out an engineer though.
You're pretty much doing it wrong, apologies for putting it that way. Stop thinking that you're going to be performing any particular hard set role. Instead... well, think of it more this way. Instead of people having hard roles (trinity based), it'll be your skills that have the different aspects of combat, i.e. delivering damage, controlling the enemy and supporting allies. So basically you'll have a variety of skills at your disposal no matter your weapon choice, and these skills will, more likely than not, have at least two of the aforementioned aspects associated with them. You may have a crippling shot that controls the enemy (via movement restriction) and causes damage for example. So instead of you being tied to one role what you'll need to understand is how each of your skills affects combat and use them situtationally. A foe that an engineer caught in a glue gun shot, for example, wouldn't be the ideal target for a crippling shot at that point... instead choose either a skill that's more damage focused, debuffing focused, or possibly a different target altogether for your crippling shot.
You'll see in the press beta videos that most people are still trying to mentally attach roles to their characters... it's a force of a very old habit. Realize that it's your skills that matter and how you use them instead. You won't be a control ranger, but you'll be able to control the enemy when necessary.

I think you'll find once actually in the game that control will be a switchable option while in battle so carrying that particular weapon will be of great use to you. Also, if you like that role i would suggest checking which weapon and which pet will be best for the role as ranger as your pet might have abilities to help with the control. I've noticed in pvp that high level rangers have abilities to tell their pet to pounce on the enemy or step in front of oncoming attacks to take damage rather then let the ranger take the damage, so there's definitely a whole list of abilities for the ranger we dunno yet.
Damn, I don't know why everyone is being butts. Some weapons are definitely more control-oriented than others, and that's what the OP is asking. Which ranger weapon is the most control-oriented. For warrior, many would recommend the obvious hammer. This is something that's pretty easy to gauge based on what we've seen.
For ranger, I'd recommend sword/dagger. The sword has great mobility as well as a spammable knockback as part of your chain. The off-hand dagger gives you a ranged cripple, also useful for control.
As your second weapon set, a main-hand axe has a ranged chill, while the shortbow has a cripple and a daze/stun. The longbow has a good knockback if you'd prefer to keep distance.
There are a lot of options, but these are the ones that stand out. I'd recommend looking over the ranger skill list if you haven't already.

From What I've seen it looks like an Engineer and Guardian have a lot of "control" abilities.
My theme song.
If devs use role terminology to describe their character choice why cant I http://guildwars2pvp.com/2011/10/team-arenanet-interview-part-3-%E2%80%93-izzy-cartwright/
if you said wait and try it I am sure I will. However wouldn't it be nice to get a beta testers opinion? If you don't have an opinion why respond at all? You angry?
Thanks for the engineer suggestion. This doesnt answer the question but appreciate the willingness to be helpful.
Shroom thanks for your opinion. So mobility and control go hand in hand because allows you to control more of the area.
You should ask "Which weapon combination is better for cc" Cus you have 2 weapons in any fight. I would say Short bow & axe+dager.
Wouldn't bleeds be considered damage over time and not control?
My initial point is simply this... if you expect to be a purely control ranger, you may find yourself getting frustrated with being unable to do so. You'll have to think differently in GW2. You can't stand there and say "I'm control guy!"... it won't work. The combat is too active, too dynamic. Think more balance, having all aspects available to you at need, and you'll be more successful.

Why? All the weapons have damage/control and some have support skill/s. If I want to focus on CC, I will be as useful as with any other combination. I chose the play style, this is who I am and how I want to play. period
actually no, you can still play with a certain style. if maximum CC is someone's goal, then it is achievable in GW2 because youre given the tools. youre not really understanding how these builds will work.
-shortbow for daze and kiting
-greatsword for hilt bash and kick
-spike/frost trap
-muddy terrain for cripple
-entangle elite skill
this build would rape most melee i think, but would probably get decimated by a ranged caster like mesmer or elementalist. i think the most versatile build would be one that focuses on pet/master swiftness and dps.
GW2 is balanced very nicely in that manner. perfect rock paper scissors with each profession able to switch to rock paper or scissors, which we havent seen in an MMO yet. each prof can engage in dps/support, dps/CC, and dps/tanky. ANet said it themselves.
The humorous part is that you're still pigeon-holing professions. What's "melee", anyhow? A warrior, who pulls out a bow and rips you a new one from across the map? A mesmer that's in your face in a sea of illusions with a sword?
People will eventually realize that it's not so cut and dried anymore. You're not limited in this game... not by roles nor even by classifications (melee, ranged, etc.) If you don't allow yourself to realize the full banance of what's available to you, if you try to confine yourself to a particular archaic role, maybe you'll do OK, but when push comes to shove your reality will shatter like the phantasm that just put you in a downed state, again.

There was a thread about how a ranger could be made into a White Lion-style class. Greatsword seemed to give you a few abilities that WLs had in WAR. A pounce ability (with a snare attached) for example. There's also a knockdown ability with a 2-hander as well.
As others have said there are very little CC effects compared to other MMOs. You won't be able to stunlock and kill someone. That said you can control situations with zoning:
A sword Ranger can zone very well. Your primary attack has a knockback (and leap) so you'll be able to keep a melee opponent off you easily. Another sword attack will cause you to leap backwards, perfect for controlling space. You'll need an offhand ranged DPS weapon (torch or axe) to capitalize on this or you can switch to a bow.
Shortbow also has further CC abilities with daze and cripple.
If you are looking to straight up melee people Greatsword is your best bet. It does a lot damage and has a hard CC too.
A lot of ranger utility focuses on applying Crippled or Chilled effects so you can keep an enemy at bay. They even have an elite skill that immobilizes a target and forces them to attack the vines to break free.
im not pigeon-holing anything. i didnt mention a "melee build". i simply stated that such a ranger build would successfully CC a player whose style is to engage in melee (like the mesmer you mention). should that player decide to mix things up, then the ranger would have to switch to his greatsword. i never recommended the above build, i just gave the guy one with the most CC abilities.
youre looking for things that arent in my message.
I think you're reading into this too hard. He gave examples of what he played in other games. The White Lion, for example, is a melee damage class. He chose to spec for control, but that didn't make him incapable of dealing damage.
He wasn't asking for a way to become pure control. He just wanted to know which weapons were the most control-oriented.
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." -Dr. Seuss
However... it wouldn't. The mesmer, for example, would easily be able to compensate for a lopsided build as described with devastating effects. You can't cripple an illusion, and you don't have any idea whether or not you're attacking the actual mesmer.
Specialization will be the undoing of many people in this game.

Guardian much? Guys, please... read information before you claim to know anything.
I prefer Longbow/Greatsword with my Ranger. Those coupled with the snare trap and stun ability allow all the control you'll need - plus tons of damage from either weapon.
What? Guardians don't have much CC. A few blinds, an immobilize, a knockback/knockback (although it seems to be the strongest in the game), and a zoning wall in Hammer/Staff. I actually think the ranger sports way more CC than a Guardian.
What Guardians do have are tons of ways of removing conditions and negating damage.
Here is a melee Ranger control build that uses mobility, rather than range, to capitalize on control.

Weapons are:
2 Handed Sword
Sword and Dagger
If you want Short Ranged, non bow attacks, you can work an Axe into the Sword/Dagger weapon slot in place of either weapon.
Maybe Dust trap, instead of Ice Trap, if you are solo or playing with other melee.

for rangers
compared to other games this game is pretty tame with CC
Remember, as well, that Traits and your choice of Beasts will be important for the build. Different beasts have different skills in the game, so some would be better suited for such a build than others.
