Not Bad

ZekiahZekiah Member UncommonPosts: 2,483

I finally gave this game a shot since it's now free and I have to say, it's not that bad. I'm really critical of games and although this isn't the best game I've played, it's certainly worth giving it a try.

If any of you are looking for something to play while waiting for something else, I'd recommend at least testing it out.

    Update:

Last night I discovered the NPC that talks about duty officers and how you can send them on assignments. All I can say is, I'm impressed with this game, there's quite a bit to do in game. STO has really come a long way over the last couple of years.

For those of you on the fence like I was, I urge you to give it a shot if you're looking for something to play and you're a Trekkie. This game is pretty fun.

I really like the character customization, it's really deep, one of the best I've seen. You can really tweak your crew to your liking. I've really just begun to scratch the surface of the game, I'm surprised at how much there is to do so far.

If I had to describe STO, I'd say that it does a lot of things really well. I don't think it does anything great but it does a lot of things really well.

Give it a shot, it's free! It's one of the better F2P models I've seen out there. I'm very critical of games as some of you have noticed lol so this is a lot coming from me.

    Engage!

I logged in the other day to check it out. I am planning on spending more time in it to see how things go. One thing I don't care for is the change of aiming system which you can ignore I know. I've hit the keystroke to activate it a few times in error and it annoyed me. That said I think I will be checking into it further once I get finished with the last couple goals I set for myself in TOR.  I need to spend more time in STO to reach a conclusion.

edit: need more coffee before posting.

Lol, coffee is a good thing, yes.

I'm still having fun with this game. It reminds me of a SWG/EVE combination although it doesn't really do anything they did as well. But, it's very deep with all the things you can do like Tribble breeding, assignments (give your crew things to do when you're on or offline), crafting (haven't tried this yet) etc.

Yesterday I tried out a couple of player made missions and one of them blew me away. They take longer than the regular missions for the most part and some of them are very creative.

All in all, I haven't spend a dime and I don't think I'm going to have to although I'd probably pick up the lifetime if it went to $199. At any rate, this game really surprised me. Trek/MMO fans should really give this a try, it's pretty fun.

I'm debating checking out this game myself but I dont have a single friend that bought the lifetime who does not regret it.  I'd play a bit longer before you make that committment.

Um, did you ever think to click your weapons for auto-fire. Also, if all you did was fire, no wonder you got bored, there's more to combat that just firing lol. You have to manage your crew triggers as well as ship/shield management etc. It's a complex system...at least compared to just holding down space bar, which I don't even do lol.

If you have better than common gear and spent your skill points wisely, what LadyNoh posted is essentially all that one needs to do.  Once you have figured out the patterns the AI uses to attack you, the game becomes fairly brainless to play.  Cryptic's AI is one of the more dumb ones out there, relying on adding tons of HP and boosting the DPS of a boss to create "challenge".

That's simply not true. If all you're doing is clicking the space bar, you don't know how to play. If you're not adusting shields, systems, and using consumables then you fail.

Now, if you want to set up a macro to cycle through everything you could do that but you can pretty much do that with any game. It wouldn't be that effective either.

Obviously you're not as critical of games as you'd like to believe you are. I can't begin to explain how laughable these 2 statements are . STO has all the depth of a tea cup saucer. Seriously , you actually haven't spent much time in the game . I get that it's F2P , but because it's F2P by no stretch of the imagination makes it a better game , then it was three months ago . Co-incidently they haven't chaged anything in game other then the price and the currency system .  Sheesh , a game goes F2P and everyone starts singing the games praises . I will say the that the player generated material is good , once you can wade through the minutia.

Really , you'd pay $199 for LTS ? I mean if you were marketing this game you've hit all the queues that may interest people . You've hit the differentiation mark ( comparing the games to better know and better designed , more successful games ) and then you planted the suggestion of paying for the game if only it were less. They've added content this month for the first time in a year . ( is it still worth an LTS ? )  It took them a year to clean up the game enough so they could release as F2P. ( Is it still worht an LTS ? ) Giving Cryptic money is like giving a Meth addict cash , you know what they'll do with the money , they repeat the same behavior and the results are the same . This is an irredeemable company . I'm glad you haven't spent any money and I'd encourage you don't . Enjoy your 3 to 4 weeks of content . ( Lvling is faster now then at release. )

I'd honestly wait at leas a month before u think about the lifetime sub(or any sub for that matter)

I didn't bother with sto when it was released(i gathered enough info to know not too) but since it's free i did.  It's fun for a short while only i found.  Has a decent amount of stuff to do but once i hit lvl 50(takes about 2 weeks) it has run out fast.

Yes, it is true and I do know how to play the game.

I do not click the spacebar.  There is no need to.  All my weapons are set to auto-fire.   My Tactical VA in her Advanced Escort can kill just about everything there is on advanced difficulty before I ever need to click a shield heal.  I also very rarely, if ever, use a consumable.  They are either discarded or vendored for a couple of EC.  I simply do not need them.

One thing I've noticed about this game is the population.  Tons upon tons of players!  No matter what zone I go to, I can't turn around without hitting 200-300 ships.  At first I thought they were all  level 3's and 4's testing the waters, but then you see that they are commanders, captains, etc... that must have tested the waters and liked what they found.

It's nice to see a game with a healthy population out in the world/universe for a change.

Yeah, it's pretty cool seeing all the ships everywhere but sometimes it's a chore to move around them. I had a huge Galaxy class in my way after zoning yesterday lol.

To jump in and play for free, I agree with the OP, STO can be fun and unique.  To pay for a sub and work work through all the content in 30 days...  Not so fun and unique.  Most things in the game are very superficial and get old fast.  Tribble breeding was fun to play with but once you have all of them, then what?  The exchange is full of tribbles and most people are selling them dirt cheap.  The duty officer system is great at first but them it turns into farmville and you want to log on each day to send them out again for the 45 points per mission.  I honestly leveled a whole tier without leaving spacedock or playing the actual game.  I just logged in, sent my guys out and logged out and played another game.

For those of you who have not tried it and view it as a free game to jump into while waiting on the next game, its fun and I would recommend it.  If you think you are going to find a home in STO...  Just wait a month or two before deciding to give Cryptic your money.  You may find that the newness wears off rather fast.

Yeah because it's pretty cool when a veteran shows off their PvP skills on a new player. I'm sure that gear and level wouldn't have anything to do with it though, the space bar is a powerful tool, especially without using consumables and officer skills.

im currently trying it out now, seeing as its on steam and every game im interested in playing right now is either in alpha/invite beta or just not launched in my area for trying it.

that being said its not a bad game, mind you i have only just hit lv 25-26 on fed the pvp i have run in to wasnt that impressive the few klingons that have attacked me in a borg instance.. either wait for me to hit 2 borg cubes solo or try to 5 on 1 me.  but owell other then that (which is more player choice then game mechanics) its decently fun.

some missions annoy the piss out of me though and i seem to suck on land combat over space :/

i do like the fact i can farm dil-crystals and convert them in to real item mall money to buy ships and content thats pretty neat, even if the item mall is a tad pricy on the convertion not many games allow you to generate ingame items for item mall buying.

i can see how the game will be boring at max level but thats the same case for all games i find now days.

    This.

It is a fairly fun game, but not much changes in the gameplay as you get higher level.  Some mobs have heavy plasma torpedo volleys that can be a challenge to take out before they get ya.  Stuff like that.

Crafting is still horrible.  Gathering is dull and just distracts you from the mission, having to go to memory alpha and do each piece one at a time to get some OK greens and blues... bleh.

I'd recommend checking out the player made content when you get the chance.  Some of the best content in the game, seriously.  Certainly beats the pants off of exploration missions.  There's one that kinda takes you on a backwards trip through the tutorial map, with a pretty clever plotline.

    Hmm...

Not sure what to make of STO F2P yet having started to play it a few days ago as my first F2P MMO. It has some good points and some bad.

    The Good

    • Some nice story arcs.

    •  Plenty of people around at all hours.

    • Character customisation is very good

    • Some fights are not always facerolls

    • Plenty of variety in space craft looks, it adds a certain uniqueness to your craft right off the bat.

    • Feels true to the Star Trek TV shows, films and books.

    The Bad

    • Story aside, the actual gameplay is very basic. Ground mobs are in little predictable chunks within a minimap, scenery is basic. Space combat is a little better but ultimately there's no feeling of having overcome a heroic encounter.

    • Most quests fall into a repetitive pattern of go to a place, do something, land (on planet, board ship, spacestation etc) do minor task, leave. It really is a rinse and repeat format that gets old within a day or two even by MMO standards.

    • Perhaps I've missed something obvious, but this is the first MMO I've played where crafting doesn't seem to be an obvious part of the game, in fact I haven't done any as yet at level 17. Ship and toon have blues and purples, plenty of EC and dilithium is being converted to C Points.

    The Ugly

    • Bugs, nasty bugs. From quest breakers, to spawning inside a spacestation at the start of a space battle.

    • The clunky interface. The GUI is far from intuitive and stupid stuff like having to press both the forward and run keys simultaneously just to run, but not able to bind that to one key is ugh, horrible. In some ways it feels pre Half Life.

    • It doesn't feel like a traditional MMO. Most of the quests are instanced little areas. I've felt no need to join a fleet (guild) or even join chat and be part of a community as the questing, indeed most of the game, feels like solo play. No "LFM to do X dungeon" or "need help taking down Y" calls in chat etc in 30 hours of online play.

Perhaps the game will open up after another dozen levels, but right now the game feels hmmm....

One of the great things about customization is the variety of options not only for your avatar  but your Bridge crew. In this game..you can look completely unique from everyone and no one need have any crew member the same.Really awesome. I wish SWTOR had this level of customization. It can be done...not sure why every developer doesn't do it.

The customization is probably the best I've seen, can't think of another game where you can customize your characters looks this much. I know that APB probably has the best out there but STO is awesome. I'm kind of OCD with the looks of my toons and this system more than satisfies. The sheer number of different possibilities is astounding as well, just strolling through the starports and you'll see all kinds of ways people designed their characters. It's very cool. I'd love to see more customization with ships but it's not too bad.

I also really enjoy the PvP. We had some good battles with Klingons yesterday, was a blast. I still think this game is fantastic and it's even growing on me. Yeah, I know, it will get boring. Well you know what? I don't think so. I suppose it will eventually but this is the most fun I've had in a MMO in a long time. I'm stunned really, didn't have much hope going into it. You know you're hooked when you think about the game all day lol.
