Question about character creation

dzoni87dzoni87 Member Posts: 541

I recently watched some videos about character customization options and i am pretty satisfied about it. however, i noticed that there is no option for changing lip and eye color present. They seems stuck with the face preset that one chooses.

So my question is: may this be cause of beta thing or what? Is there any word of this being implemented later on? While this is not a gamebreaking for me and is really trivial, i would still like more options for making my character unique in online world.

EDIT: if anyone can get any source or link of word on this topic, i would be thankfull

I'll have to do some super sleuthing, because honestly even if I had heard it in an interview or video, I don't think this is something that I'd remember.

You could always ask on the reddit ama's going on.

About half way down the page, in a large post with many links and references, developer Reagan Wright says:

"There is a technical reason we cannot separate the eye color from the faces. We hope to have enough faces though, that you guys will be very pleased with the choices".

Now, that was over six months ago, but no signs that it has changed, so I'm guessing those techincal reasons aren't something they could work around.

I definitely prefer to pick my own eye color, but in many games that allow it, the results are often underwhelming or just plain bad. Plus, you usually have to be pretty close to discern eye color, so  it's probably not worth what ever performance hit might result from the way the game handles the character head models and textures/shaders needing to be changed to allow for custom eye colors.

I found the original source of that quote to be in a GW2Guru thread.

and it looks like there was a followup post by the same person.

SO... I can't promise (seriously), I'm not on the character art or programming teams. But today I spoke to some people and apparently, eye color isn't AS impossible as I thought. It's important to us, like it is to you guys, but we want to ship the kick-ass game as the very top priority. I'm sure you'd all probably agree.

PS: Don't forget my disclaimers on not being in a position to promise.

Love you all for being so passionate about it!

This is odd... "technical reason"..." cannot separate" ... I cant tink for a reason, except maybe some lore related one?!

Funny thing is that you can change the size of the iris, but not eye color.

What kinda weird character creator is that, srsly!? image

This is odd to me. I can understand why they cant do this with lips, but eyes are ussualy the sepparate meshes than the head model. It shouldnt be that hard to have various textures for them. But, this being beta phase, still remains to be seen

However, thank you for links and sources. Nice read :)

    Very nice!!! :D

I'm really hoping that we'll have plenty of customisation options (see my signature). Except that we'll have 4 body types and more dye options, it thus far looks a bit like GW1: a number of faces and hairstyles. I liked it though, especially if you can combine any of 30+ faces with those hairstyles, -colours, skin colours and some height adjustments.

I do hope we'll get more different armor options though. There weren't a lot of female armour sets that didn't show your knees and part of the upper legs, for example. Especially for some professions - and even pants stopped above your knees. It looked quite silly that you had bare knees if you used pants and normal boots. It was quite obvious that they actually only used 2 or 3 models that got different textures.

Well let's see what GW2 brings.
