If the stories in GW2 are anything like the ones in GW1 (which is very possible), then SWTOR simply blows GW2 out of the water.
thats opinion man, I am much more into the Guild Wars lore then anything that has to do with the old republic, and I enjoy KOTOR.
think of it this way guys, In Guild Wars 2 the choices you make will have visual effects in your home instance, where in TOR they just completed a quest and you got your reward, but with light or dark side depending on the choice.
in GW2 you will make less choices then in TOR, but they will have more meaning.
Honestly? I prefer the way it is in GW2 simply because I won't have a cinematic story tied to everything I do. Goddamn that got tedious.
Far as the storytelling itself? Seems your standard faire. I will say far as I'm concerned from everything I have heard the vo is done way better in SWTOR.
Although, I'll take the limited use in GW2 for more dramatic effect over having a story for everything any day. Well, that and hearing my character say "Murder and Mayhem awaits!" or "Time for you to see what a sith can do!" for the hundredth time.
Plus that awesome alien vo that never gets old

He's actually a disgruntled ANet dev. That's how he's been able to see the entire GW2 story and make a conclusive judgment about it. That, or he's talking out of his ass. Take your pick.
As with all other things in life, I vote ass.
+1 interwebz
TOR story was dissapointing - I played Consular and after act 1 (which was better than the othe parts) the rest of it was pretty bleh. Ending was completely anticlimatic and really quite silly. Haven't played TOR since the day I fully beat the story.
My only concern with the GW2 personal story is that it is not level scaled.
I would love it if you could do the story of a particular race straight through without doing anything else. Why?
Well I'm sure my main character will try and 100% complete every event in every zone and do the personal story.
But for alts, might just want to play through the "main" story of the race.
Im not so sure that personal story missions are not scaled. In this video it shows his level of 4 scaled down to level 3 (in green) on the very bottom left of the screen.
You can see what I mean at roughly 1:40 into the video.
He has a buddy with him, so the mission is tougher it seems. I am not sure if the actual mission scales down, or if his level is scaled down because that particular mission was intended to be played at level 3.
Yea just to piggy back this, the story does scale. Adds to retention as well least for some people, and opens up many choices in leveling IMO.
Creslin if you'd like to have some videos of the personal story, just for a glimpse I think this is a good video to showcase.
It also showcases interaction with npcs outside of story and what not.

So prior to really diving into how GW2's storytelling works in the press beta videos, I used to consider SWTOR to be the "superior" game when it comes to story. But tell you the truth, I'm starting to change my mind. Because it seems like many of the things that bothered me about SWTOR's storytelling have been resolved in GW2. For example:
1. SWTOR has "class" stories, GW2 has "race" stories - I hated having my story tied to my class. Because that meant that if I wanted to experience a specific storyline, I had to play a specific class. Also, since each base class is really two classes, that means that you can't really make a Gunslinger and a Scoundrel without repeating the story. In GW2, story is tied to your race, and each race can be every class. So you'll never be stuck with a class you don't like just because you heard its story was good.
2. Your SWTOR character's background is completely defined by his class, in GW2, you choose his background - I didn't like that my character was completely defined by his class. One Sith Inquisitor was the same as the next. In GW2 though, you get to actually define your character a bit more to personalize their story.
3. SWTOR's branching was largely an illusion - SWTOR had lots of different VO and dialog choices, but more often than not, they all lead to the same ultimate conclusion. Whether you decide to be a dick or a nice guy, the quest giver's problem still gets resolved somehow and nothing changes with the rest of your story. I'm sure there are some exceptions to this, but it's largely the rule. In GW2, from what I hear the choices you make at character creation will actually have significant effects on your story. Granted, you will not make dialog choices in GW2's story after this, but I actually prefer at least some of my choices ACTUALLY changing my story than just having this illusion of dialog affecting my story when it really isn't.
So what do you all think? If you've played SWTOR, do you think it's storytelling will be better than GW2's? Or do you prefer the GW2 approach?
How the fuck are we supposed to know until GW2 releases?
The only thing I can tell you so far is that SWTOR voice acting talent makes GW2 look like high school drama class students. (Not very good ones either)
Of course I've never been interested in GW2 for story so it shouldn't bother me too much.

Prefer the way GW2 sets up the story however the way the story is presented goes to SWTOR.
Yup, gotta gree on that. However, I will take a better overall game than one with a huge focus on cutscenes. I can't lie though, I do like the cutscenes a lot (even though a lot of the fight scenes are pretty laughable... super slow swings of the saber, etc).
Maybe Im alone but I HATED swtor voice overs. Worst actors ever.
I can agree to that to an extent. I thought the actresses for the Warrior and IA were good, though. I also think the actor for Darth Baras did a great job. He is the best actor in the game by far. I really hated that character because of the acting. A lot of the world quest actors kinda sucked, though.

Because of GW2's iterative design process people need to be aware that what they're seeing in video is still a work in progress, especially when it comes to voice. Some of their older stuff is clearly placeholder, and who knows if the current stuff will even be the final version.
Example
Norn starting area dialog from March 2011. The end especially is cringeworthy imho.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it."-Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
These Norn starting area dialogues (Old and new) are why I say SWTOR's storytelling is much, much better than GW2's can ever hope to be. GW2's personal story is pure cheese. There are some ridiculously good writers over at BioWare that really presented an excellent narrative, especially for things like the Sith Warrior, the Imperial Agent, and the Republic Trooper.
Again, this is the only thing SWTOR has over any game. The rest of the game is garbage. In GW2's case, story and crafting are going to be the game's "garbage."
Not that I care ... I'm a roleplayer and intend to completely ignore the personal story in its entirety. Sorry ANet. To hell with your story, I want to make my own.

But really your character's story doesn't matter much, in the long run of an MMO. It's the story of the world and the stories players share that really matters. It is why so many people praise SW:TOR for it's, but don't necessarily stick around when it's over.
If you had asked before SWToR launched, many would have thought SWToR's looked better on paper. But now that we've seen it implemented, many of those same would change their mind.
Given that truth, how could I possible forgive myself and lay stake on what I perceive GW2's will be like.
"I perceived that what I read about SWToR's would be the ultimate. That proved to be wrong. So what I perceive about GW2 must be the answer....."
I beg some of you to stop emotionally investing in a game's publicity rather than the actual game, which I seem to need to remind people, you haven't played it yet.
The only honest opinion is, "if what I perceive turns out to be true, then GW2 wins". But let me ask you, what was the last mmo you bought that met or exceded the expectations set out in the ad campaign?
Buyer be ware. Don't emotionally invest yourself in video games. Especially ones that you haven't played.

I've played GW2 for hours. Different demos at two cons, and multiple characters with different story paths. Enough to know that videos on youtube capture different story elements to the ones I experienced when I played.
Again, nobody's saying that the two games at level 40 are going to be like this or like that. All we've shown is that from starting characters, we can indeed tell how the story is presented because we've either played it ourselves or there's plenty of footage on the internet of people playing through it that is verified to be in the game as-is. And THAT footage can be compared against early SWTOR footage (which did not change between beta and launch, which is also verifiable via video footage and personal experience).

And THAT footage can be compared against early SWTOR footage (which did not change between beta and launch, which is also verifiable via video footage and personal experience).
