It's sad....

....but I had been playing MMORPG's since 1999 when I started EQ. I'm not going to get into all the nostalgia and great memories of it all....but it's definitely what kept me going with them to this point.

Now? Not playing one, and haven't for almost 2 years now. I am playing a free to play RTS more than anything (Stronghold Kingdoms). Well....next to Skyrim....and Cities XL 2011, and PAYDAY: The Heist and...well, the point is anything BUT an MMORPG. =P Is it because I have grown up or simply tired of them? I don't think so. It's just they have lost what made them intresting to me. And one of those things is what keeps me playing Stronghold Kingdoms so much. COMMUNITY.

SO MUCH to SHK's that unless you stick with it until high enough lvl you'd never know was there. Political structure, military tactics and timing, espionage, etc, etc. And LOTS of people to chat with, make friends with, and ally with to make it fun. These are things missing from MMORPG's these days, as they turn more towards being single player RPG's that just HAPPEN to have other players there too. But other players act more as enhanced AI than actual people...since most don't care to group (Since everything is nearly soloable to cap) or even talk to you unless you have something to offer them. Sad state of affairs what they have become.

Still searching forums and gaming company sites in hopes that someone will bring back community and all the other things that once set MMORPG's apart from other genre's and made them great, but with today's polish standards, graphics, UI's, and enhanced combat (Skyrimish or Dragon Age style would be nice). Legends of Antavia looks like my brightest hope thus far, but apprehensive about an indie company looking for donations towards it.

P.S. If what I said about SHK's piques anyone's interest to try it....I am on U.S. servers, World 2 under the name Kaledren...Faction: Defiance. Make a village in Scotland and as close to Ross-Shire Province as you can, or on Western Isles. Can help get you started. What do you have to lose...it's free! =) They are actually about to open a World 3 due to a MASSIVE influx of new players, but too far along myself to move to it and start over. Cheers!

You are not alone.....many of us feel like this.. only the developers dont or wont see it...

I guess there is a reason we dont see any Open world designed games anymore.. Sadly I think it has more to do with $ then with the creativity among devs going down..  More money in the Themepark...

I also feel your pain. I have a couple of MMOs installed right now but I have to talk myself into playing any of them at this point. I haven't played anything regularly in at least two years or more for the exact same reason. No server wide sense of community at all. As you said it really is quite sad what MMOs have devolved into these days. Most are nothing more than glorified lobby games at this point.
